How to do multiple DVB-TS to 4 DVB-C QAM in 2 RU in a Master
HeadEnd and sent these to 1RU EDGE QAM in the Sub-HE's
In this short note we like to explain how easy it is to Transmodulate DVB Signals into QAM RF Channels
by using our DRD700 Multistream Receiver processor connected to an B-Nova unit and transmit these
Pre-Multiplex to EQM Modulators via IP.

To keep it as short as possible, we only use 2x DVB-T Input streams in the DRD700 and one coming from
IP, sent to the B-Nova and re-sent to EDGE-QAM.

Assumed, that the Quick-Start Manuals have given you the right Idea to address the units by
WebInterFace and its correct Address-Settings. We use the default ones…

DRD700: 192.168.0.200 , B-Nova: 192.168.0.100

EQM2xx: 192.168.200.1 -> Changed to 192.168.0.23 by DQAM-IPconfig tool

Your PC with Web-Browser– should be in that range i.e. 192.168.0.111

We simply start with setting up the DRD700:

The Fault Message appears when only one Power supply has 'juice'.

After time-out or new login it asks for Username/Password. Default is: admin/Blankom (which can be
change to default-PW= Hilkom soon…

Just go to INPUT, and adjust the frequencies, source-port and after the tuner locks to the signal you get
information about all you need: We will use here DVB-T Channels instead of Sat-Channels but basically
that does not make any difference – except in payload of Services per QAM-Channel.

Do the same for the other input sources… 2 used, and status page shows:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now we adjust the output – first as pass-through from Input:

You can chose UDP, RTP or ProMPEG, adjust Port and IP-address and pass TS1-2 (and 3+4 if used).

Because we would sent these to the B-Nova, FEC-ProMPEG is an additional HW-Module. In Same short
distance networks like in the same Headend used, FEC-ProMPEG isn't necessary.

Let's have a look into the streams:

With any Receiving Software like VLC, TSREADER or DecTEk please assure that your Windows Firewall is
switched to OFF to allow Multicast streams coming in to the PC.

Just a Remark about IPTV –SPTS streams: The DRD700 can send the single Services as SPTS and assign
the channels to an IPTV-STB by the SAP/SDP standard:

RFC 2974 Session Announcement Protocol October 2000

IPv4 global scope sessions use multicast addresses in the range

224.2.128.0 - 224.2.255.255 with SAP announcements being sent to
224.2.127.254 (note that 224.2.127.255 is used by the obsolete
SAPv0 and MUST NOT be used).

IPv4 administrative scope sessions using administratively scoped IP

multicast as defined in [7]. The multicast address to be used for
announcements is the highest multicast address in the relevant
administrative scope zone. For example, if the scope range is
239.16.32.0 - 239.16.33.255, then 239.16.33.255 is used for SAP
announcements.

The MPTS- Streams are CBR (see PID8191 is existing)

Difference to SPTS:

We simply chose one service, do EIT-Insertion ON and SAP as well.

Control by VLC:

You get the playlist (here 2 SPTS informations).

Doubleclick one of them and you get the stream:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Control by TS-Tool (here DecTek):

You can see: The DRD700 SPTS stream carries (additional to normal SPTS-Streams) following parts in
total:

• PAT (Program Association Table)

• PMT (Program Map Table)
• SDT (Service descriptor Table)
• EIT actual p/f and Schedule (EPG information for only this particular TV-Service)
• TDT and TOT (Time/Date and Offset -> For IPTV-STB's be able to assign their correct
date/time+Zone for being able to get the correct EPG-Times)
• AIT (hbbTV data)

The Channel-Information's are transmitted from the DRD700 by SAP/SDP Protocoll as well according to
the rules written in the SAP/SDP Specifications:

The SAP-Information is transmitted over a Multicast which starts with the same first address-part but on
reserved following numbers: This SPTS comes over 225.1.1.40:1004 the corresponding SAP-Information
are sent on: 225.2.127.254 Port: 9875

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This can be captured by an IPTV-Set-Top Box if the first Multicast-Address part is known
(Here 225. x.y.z).
---------------------------------------------------------------- Back to the DVB to IP by DRD700.

We have setup now several DVB-Input streams and converted into MPTS and SPTS. Obviously if the
Transportstreams from SAT or Terrestrial or DVB-C are encrypted, the selectable services can be
decrypted by professional CAM's inserted into the DRD700 CI-Slots and then streamed out.

Summary of the Streams:

MPTS1: 225.1.1.1 : 10001, UDP

Remark: Portranges
MPTS2: 225.1.13: 10003, UDP should be assigned
according to the
MPTS3: 225.1.1.10: 10010, UDP
recommendations of the
SPTS1: 225.1.1.40 : 1004, UDP IANNA/RIPE

We are having these streams on a Layer2+ Switch now and assigning these streams as Inputs to the B-
Nova QAM-Modulators:

First Log-IN:

Configure the Input to the QAM-Output-Module:

Save time and create multiple (edit them later):

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx -9- 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And SAVE. -> You'll see the streams after a while:

Now we wane proceed with the Module configuration:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 10 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First we are enabling all channels but leave the common RF-Output closed:

SAVE ->

Now we start the Cherrypicking and processing:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 11 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We like to pass MPTS1 to QAM-MUX1:

Proceed with the next channels:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 12 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the last channel we do cherry picking from all 4 streams and multiplex MPTS1-3 with SPTS1:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 13 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Look at outputs:

The QAM-Datarate of 50686 kb/s is related to the QAM-Settings: 8MHz, 256QAM-Mode + Symbolrate
etc… Always assure, to not oversubscribe the channel by adding too many services. You would get a
hint from the B-Nova anyway.

Now we have 4 QAM Channels filled with Content -> Question: What is missing? Right, we need a
Network Information Table: NIT.

We use the magic WIZZARD:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 14 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Assign Network ID and Name, and chose the installed Modulator Modules which should be included into
the NIT:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 15 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the chance to Download/Edit and View the Tables if the PSI-Editor Option has been enabled in
the Chassis.

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

APPLY and the NIT is inserted into the QAM-Channels:

Now we have finished that part:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 17 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But we want to send these Streams to a remote-Sub-headend:

So we assign the IP-Output of the B-Nova QAM_Multiplexes:

To be considered: The EQM-Transportstreams need MPTS with CBR. So we adjust this in the B-Nova for
the output streams: in 2 ways:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 18 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And enable the IP-Output of the QAM-Modulator:

By edit modulators:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 19 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enable the IP-Outputs, change the IP-adresses if you like, consider the TTL value (long or short distance
Datalines) switch OFF the NULL-Filter (assure CBR here). And your done. Locally the B-Nova QAM-Output
can be used or not…:

Result:

If you have done that actually to this step with only one Switch not separated the Ethernet-management
– from the Streaming-Ports , You'll get problems to access the units Web-GUI's becaasue they are
overloaded now with several hundred megabits per second!

Controlling the Output streams of B-Nova by using a second SFP:

And set the output of QAMch1 to IP on GbE2:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 21 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Connect Stream-Analyzer:

The NIT is there, EPG by EIT are there …

We control the QAMch4:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 22 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mux is correct, ARTE as additional Service, EIT is remultiplexed, NIT is there, AIT is passed, …

EIT Data are fluctuating … so sometimes from DVB-T sources need to wait until all are popping up in the
Stream.

Now it's time to setup the EQM2xy in the Sub-Headend:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 23 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Set Channel 1 up to Ch 4 with the correct settings:

Because we already sent the NIT from the B-Nova to the EQM2xy, we do not need to import one from a
separate stream:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 24 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally we enable the RF-Output, and connect the Input streams:

Finally simply control the EQM Channels:

and you have now in the Remote-headend QAM channels with High
Performance Digital synthesized Outputs and real more than 45dB MER:

Application example DRD-B-Nova-EQM.docx - 25 - 4. July 2012

Hilkom Digital GmbH ● TecCenter ● D-31162 Bad Salzdetfurth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, you can Measure and will see these QAM-RF-Outputs are the best you can get @ this high level
output.
