Text description provided by the architects. In a quiet residential area in metropolitan Tokyo resides the Koji
Tsutsui Architect & Associates constructed Industrial Designer House. The client required that that the
house be not only private in nature but also in coexistence with the client's feelings for his life’s work,
industrial design.

Along the process of putting together the requirements, it became clear that the client wished to have: an
indoor garage for his beloved vehicle; a study with a view to the car; a living/ dining space where his
treasured industrial products will be displayed; and completely separated guest room and bed room for
sleep. On the other hand, considering that the act of thinking about design is part of the client’s daily life,
it occurred to me that the division between designing and living needed to be as ambiguous as possible.

While focusing on fulfilling the requested functions, I attempted to divide each
room and softly connecting them together at the same time.

The living/dining room is a core, with its large opening that provides external
views and natural light. Ambiances of sunlight and landscape are introduced to
the rooms connected to this core through internal openings, in a smooth and
indirect manner. All elements are made into a primitive space composed of purely
architectural factors such as floor, wall, ceiling, stairs, void and openings.

The result is an internal space as an abstract substance. Valley of walls on third floor, refreshing expanse
in the living/dining room on second floor, and cave-like study and garage on ground floor; everything is
woven together into a landscape that offers a variety of sceneries.

The steel-frame structure was adopted for an easier expression of the softly connected sequences. Taking
advantage of the steel’s lightness and strength, some rooms are suspended while others feature beams
with dynamic skip, in order to realize a sense of free flow within the entire space. Steel sheet used on
exterior walls also serves as window glazing system, expressing in an abstract manner to the outside the
flow of space set free by this steel frame.

Hopefully this building will surpass my intents the moment when such architectural sceneries, the client’s
feelings toward industrial products and the actual living all meet together.

Text description provided by the architects. Indonesia has a tropical climate. Tropical areas have rains almost
the whole year through. For the reason of extreme weather, the home design should be able to accommodate
the climate. The House Located in Griya Loka, Serpong in a suburb area near Jakarta (the capital city of
Indonesia). These townships residential area is dense enough. The home design-oriented is focusing on natural
resources for lighting and ventilation.‘Breathing House’ is located in an area, which has been formed since the
80s. The site is blended with the surrounding environment as a green area. We optimize the potential
asymmetrical shaped into the owner's identity with a functional approach. The owner is a dynamic young family
with two children. Both are eager to have a more comfortable dwelling, environmentally friendly and at the
same time also represent personal identity. "Form follow function" became a common thread in keeping the
desired characteristics.

Section

Site follows the asymmetric land, forming a new grid and creating unexpected spatial experience. Elements of
surprise are inserted into the flow of circulation between spaces. The ground floor as the public areas is designed
to 'breath' naturally through the large ventilation that is provided from the holes pattern in some areas of the
building. All space is centered at large void holes, which has skylights on it. Under the skylight there is indoor
swimming pool, which also aims to lower the room temperature naturally.

The private bedroom area, workspace and living space are on the
second floor. On the third floor, we designed a roof garden that
serves as an additional open area resident to do outdoor activities
and family events.

We used natural and green materials such as bricks, Gain

Reinforced Cement (GRC), and recycle metal are explored in
order to have a contemporary new design. This house also works independently with recycle rainwater to
watering garden and car washing. The house is expected to represent the identity of an eco-friendly Indonesian
modern family home.

Text description provided by the architects. In Javanese, lakon means the main actor, or the protagonist. The
title was chosen due to its design process and its execution whose client is the main actor. He is being center
of attention since the design process until the execution. Since the beginning, the client collects ethnic wood
material which he dreams to use it as architectural element of his building. therefore, it becomes element for
one area of the façade of the building.

The client also arranges the furniture and the other element for this
office by himself (still also with the architect’s direction) to execute
this Graha Lakon (laras-kontras, lawas-kontemporer) or (harmony-
contrast, old-fashioned-contemporary).

From the outside, harmony-contrary element can be seen from the juxtaposition of brick material and the
ethnic wood panels with random impression. Both elements were neatly arranged and contained of small
panels, but we can find its contrary power within the arrangement between the organized and the random.
It happened also in the juxtaposition of bricks and the contemporary element (concrete, glass, iron), as
the locality and globality (which actually contrary) come together but still can be harmony in this design.
Thus made both tension and intimacy come up within them.
