Question 1 [47]

1.1 Explain any two mechanisms that are responsible for generation of residual stresses
during laser cladding and how they can be minimized? (10)

1.2 Discuss the difference in microstructure between the heat affected zone and the substrate.
(6)
1.3 Between evaporation and sputtering physical vapour deposition processes, which process
can be used for production of high quality coatings that can be used in application that
demand high wear resistance? Give reasons for your answer. (10)
1.4 Explain the five stages that are involved during chemical vapour deposition. (15)
1.5 Between Sol Gel and thermal spraying, choose a process that you can use to produce high
quality coating for protection of automobile (car) brake discs. Also explain why you have
chosen the process for these application. (6)

Question 2 [25]

2.1 Make a graphical representation of arc efficiency from the data provided in Table 2. Also
explain the effect of travel velocity of the heat source on arc efficiency. (11)
