I.INTRODUCTION:
Computer-mediated communication (CMC), wherein people use computers and networks to
communicate with one another, makes communication across great distances and different time zones
convenient, eliminating the time and geographic constraints of in-person communication. Mediated
communication or mediated interaction refers to communication carried out by the use of information
communication technology and can be contrasted to face-to-face communication. In our daily life,
communication helps us build relationships by allowing us to share our experiences, and needs, and
helps us connect to others. It’s the essence of life, allowing us to express feelings, pass on information
and share thoughts.
In today’s generation Computer-Mediated Communication has become the form of
communication. Humans utilized computers in doings things conveniently and faster than ever.
Computers became the medium or in the middle of every communication, transaction, and
negotiation. The emergence of computers helped humans connect with each other and build a virtual
environment called cyber space. Cyber Space is an environment in which humans used today to
spread various information. Technology is a key element in computer mediated communication, it
allows us to break the limits and cross boundaries. It has become a fact of life, and prove its
importance in different fields of studies. Along with the evolution of technology, computers also
reached greater heights. We never stop searching for new form of technology and are still looking
beyond on how to improve today’s existing technology.
A communication also it is the way on how to deal with the other people through conveying
information, exchanging of thoughts in order to create a proper bonding, and understanding. A
communication also has a verbal and non-verbal communication. When we say verbal
communication, it is a communication wherein we speak, talking and even online communication. On
the other hand, non-verbal communication is a communication that we used body language such as
gestures and through with this we can express our information. Such as sign language, if we saw or
we watch news broadcast we can see there’s a person used sign language for all the people who have
a disability with their hearings, or speaking.

II.DISCUSSION
Computer- Mediated Communication has become an integral part of today’s generation. It is
a kind of communication in which technology is involve mainly computers. Communication through
the help of computers has made things more convenient. However, using computers as a medium of
communication can also be alarming due to some obstacles that we need to address. These obstacles
will hinder the exchange of information effectively if disregarded. To overcome these obstacles
experts in the field of communication has formulated different theories and hypothesis in which they
believe would help us break these obstacles. Some of the theories and hypothesis involve are: Turn-
Taking, Interactivity, and Social Cueing. These theories and hypothesis will be elaborated as we go
deeper into our discussion.

The Theories and important Terminologies in Computer Mediated Communication

Theories and Hypothesis has been formulated by communication experts in order to have a
better understanding on how communication works through the help of technology. Through research
and seeking of innovations humans has invented powerful technologies to make communication
easier. Some of these technologies has made out of the word and are widely used by us. We use these
technologies to mainly spread information and interact with others. As we human being referred to as
social-beings. We need to communicate in order to understand and respond. Examples of
communication through the help of technologies are e-mails, instant messaging apps (Messenger,
Facebook, Instagram, etc.). Through the constant use of technologies, we can have further insights on
what will be the future of these form of communication and how will it evolve as time pass by.
SOCIAL-CUEING
Social cueing refers to the individual or a group that conveys information with their different
cues. Social cueing also has different ways in expressing or conveying information. Example
meetings all we know that in a meeting there’s a speaker and its audience their sharing information
and different cues. That’s an example of social cueing through face to face or personal. The last one is
an online platform this is the way to communicate or sharing information through online. example last
year we are experiencing a pandemic which can affect our education. But the DEPED implemented an
online class which we are experienced. We communicate with use of gadgets like phone and laptop
through Google Classrooms, we can easily understand or sharing information.
In Computer-Mediated Communication social-cueing is an important aspect as it allows the
information being relayed to be clear and can prevent misunderstanding as a whole. Due to these
social cues, we can still express and clearly convey what we want to impart to the one we are
communicating with.
INTERACTIVITY
Interactivity refers to the communication between people and digital devices or content. It is
the ability of a computer, program, or other content to respond to the actions of the person that’s using
it. In a nutshell, it is what allows you to navigate a website, use social media, or play your favourite
video game. The ability to communicate with another person over the internet instantly through
instant messenger applications or telephone applications is another aspect of new media interactivity.
Interactivity allows for active involvement of individuals on the content level of the communication
process. While both interaction and interactivity include learner involvement, interaction is more
often interpersonal and occurs within a social context and interactivity is often between a human and a
computer. Effective Interactive Communication is transmitting and receiving information clearly and
communicating actively with others in a manner that is effective and consistent with the
organizational objectives.
TURN-TAKING
Turn-taking is a part of the conversation structure in which one person listens while the other
person speaks. As the conversation progresses, the roles of the listener and the speaker move back and
forth, which creates a circle of discussion. Turn-taking is important when it comes to effectively
participating and interacting with others. Turn-taking allows active listening and productive
discussion. Turn-taking occurs in a conversation when one person listens while the other person
speaks. As a conversation progresses, the listener and speaker roles are exchanged back and forth a
circle of discussion. Taking turns in conversation, walking through a doorway, during meals, at
appointments, while shopping, and even while driving are just some examples of how turn taking
occurs day in and day out. Turn-taking is a type of organization in conversation and discourse where
participants speak one at a time in alternating turns. In practice, it involves processes for constructing
contributions, responding to previous comments, and transitioning to a different speaker, using a
variety of linguistic and non-linguistic cues
A. CONTENT HYPOTHESIS
In Computer-Mediated Communication this hypothesis posits that the content of the message
or the quality of the message is the only thing that matter regardless of the medium being used. This
means that the quality of the message can be equal even if it was delivered in different platform. For
example, in sending messages online no matter what kind of platform we are using as long as the
content and the quality of information is present and the same, the medium being used doesn’t matter.
The only thing that matters here in this hypothesis is the content of the message itself not the medium.
B. NEGOTIATION HYPOTHESIS
In Computer Mediated Computer the negotiate hypothesis is one of the most aspects in terms
of communication because all we know that the negotiation is an agreement of both sides in order to
communicate properly. The sender needs to be more persuasive and credible so that the receiver will
believe them and the flow of negotiation will be effective. One of the example is that business
meetings, both sides have an agreement on how to deal or to improve the business. Another thing is
that the sales lady in a clothing, a sales lady should be a very good in delivering the message in order
the customers interested in a certain and have an agreement.
C. SOCIAL PROCESSES
Social Processes refers to how individuals interact and engaged in an online community. It
refers to the level of participation and acceptance towards others in an online community. In
Computer-Mediated Communication it is important to have a great consideration to the ones we are
communicating with as we don’t know what they are going through. For example, when we are
involve in a group of youth in an online platform, the moment we participate in the community we
need to be careful in the comments and replies we do because we don’t know what each of the
individuals are going through. We need to have a positive and welcoming attitude to everyone so that
no one will be excluded.
Interactivity and Social-Cueing makes the communication enjoyable even if we are doing it
online. These two aspects of Computer-Mediated Communication allow the flow of communication
interactive and most of all informative.

III. CONCLUSION
Taking everything into account, we can say that communication in any form is an essential
part of all human activities. Computer-Mediated Communication can be convenient yet gives us
problems we need to overcome in order to have an effective communication. It bridges the gap
between relationship and allows us to understand others. It has made us on who we are today and
reflects our character as a thinking individual. We need to bear in mind that technology can be a
powerful tool in doing communication. It helps us exchange information effectively if utilized well.
Additionally, we need to know that form of communication is not constant, it is changing as
technology evolves. It is important to know this factor in order for us to adapt and make the exchange
of communication effective.
Theories and Hypothesis formulated by experts helps us understand how computer-mediated
communication works. It helps us breakthrough existing obstacles that will hinder us in delivering
information on a daily basis even if we are online or in real-time process. We have no other words to
say but to be thankful to those experts who formulated such theories and hypothesis mentioned as it
greatly helps us give firm understanding on how should we have an effective communication and how
to relay important information.
