SAYSON, CHRISIA BELLE G.

1. Why did the Americans need the cooperation of the elites? Explain!
The Americans had trouble finding qualified help for this project. People with experience running
governments were based in the United States and resisted working in the Philippines. The Americans
required the assistance of the Filipino elites in order to seize power in the nation. The elites, on the
other hand, teamed up with the Americans as soon as they realized there might be opportunities
brought by the Americans for their political and economic interests. They immediately assisted the
Americans in restructuring the local government.

2. Why did the elites immediately cooperate with the Americans? Explain!
Battle after battle saw Americans come out on top. The American military victories provided the
Filipino elites with a new opportunity. The Americans offered autonomy to the Philippines, which
meant that Filipinos could continue to hold government positions even though the Philippines was
governed by the Americans. With the impending American victory, the elites immediately accepted
the offer of autonomy by the United States. The elites in control of the government already
submitted, even though the conflict was still going on. Filipino leaders had already betrayed their
people while they were still engaged in conflict.

3. Did the Filipinos stop fighting after the capture of Aguinaldo? Explain!
Yes, Aguinaldo departed public life after being apprehended on March 23, 1901, and consented
to swear allegiance to the United States. For the masses, the war was far from over, but the elites'
collaboration with the Americans gave the impression that it had already ended and peace had been
restored throughout the archipelago. After Aguinaldo was arrested, the Americans believed that the
battle was done, but some Filipinos persisted in fighting them. Several groups started their own anti-
government activities. There was no centralized authority that oversaw all of the operations. These
movements used guerilla tactics and had widespread Filipino support.

Filipinos? Explain!
Education is the greatest contribution of United States to the Philippines is the system of public
education. The Americans had caused to the country, there is also a need to properly contextualize
their actions. In terms of education, the Americans used it as a major tool to tighten their grip on the
minds of the Filipinos. The Americans compelled the Filipinos to learn the English language. They
also compelled parents to send their children in school. By teaching, the Americans shaped the minds
of the Filipinos to accept their colonization as a normal situation.

5. Why was the Commonwealth an important step towards the attainment of the Philippine
Independence? Explain!
The Commonwealth marked the successful conclusion of initiatives to establish a firm timeline for
the termination of American rule over the Philippines. The promise of future independence was not
made until the Jones Law of 1916, when the Filipinos were prepared for self-governance. It was
created after the Tydings-McDuffie Act to take the position of the Insular Government, a US
territorial government. In order to prepare for the nation's full attainment of independence, the
Commonwealth was created as a transitional government.
