IV. Answer the following:

1. What arrangement was made between Jumman and his aunt after she transferred her property to him?
Ans. She would stay with him and he would look after her.

2. Algu approached the Panchayat because Sahu refused to pay him for the bullock.

3. Why did Sahu propose Jumman’s name?


Ans. Sahu knew that Jumman had become Algu’s enemy.
4. “This made his aunty very angry...” Explain in detail the reason why Jumman’s aunt got angry and her
next plan of action.
Ans. The arrangement made between Jumman and his aunt after she transferred her property to him was
that, she would stay with him and he would look after her. Gradually, Jumman grew indifferent towards his
aunt and his wife even grudged the little food that his aunt wanted every day. After a few months, she
couldn’t tolerate those insults any longer and asked for a monthly allowance, so that she could set up a
separate kitchen but he refused to do so. Then, she decided to take her case to the Panchayat.

5. What were the reactions of the villagers on listening to the old lady’s case?
Ans. Some of the villagers sympathised with her while others laughed at her. A few of them advised her to
make it up with her nephew and his wife.

6. ‘Algu’s heart sank and he turned pale.’ Why do you think Algu faced this uncomfortable situation?
Ans. Algu faced this uncomfortable situation because Sahu proposed the name of Jumman for the head
Panch and Algu thought that he would not give the decision in his favour because in the previous case, Algu
himself had given a decision against Jumman.

V. Answer with reference to the context


1.‘So strong was their bond of friendship….’ Whose friendship is being referred to the given line? How can
you say that they had a strong bonding?

Ans. Ref: The above-mentioned line is taken from the story “Fair Play” written by Munshi Premchand.
Context: The friendship of Algu and Jumman is being referred to in the given line. They had a strong bonding
because whenever either of them went away from the village, the other looked after his family.

2. “God live in the heart of the Panch and his voice is the voice of God”
(a) Who said the above line and to whom?
Ans. Jumman’s aunt said this to Algu.

(b) Identify the place where this was said.


Ans. The speaker said these words to Algu in Panchayat.

(c) “God live in the heart of the Panch and his voice is the voice of God”- Give reasons for this statement
Ans. The speaker said so because she nominated Algu as the head Panch and Algu was reluctant to pass
judgement against his friend, Jumman.

(d) What happened next?


Ans. Next, Algu listens to the case and does justice to Jumman’s aunt.
