Introduction

The main objective of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Technology (FEAT) at the Caribbean
Maritime University is to produce multi-skilled industry ready engineers able to evaluate and
provide solutions to problems within local and global industries.

This Faculty offers programmes designed to satisfy the requirements for trained multi-disciplinary
engineers who are internationally recognized as being able to analyze, design and develop solutions
to problems in the local, regional, and global industries. The intent of these programmes is to
develop in the individual candidate, the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to function at the
supervisory and management level within a complex and rapidly changing engineering
environment. The programmes offered by the faculty are designed to take advantage of computer-
aided engineering tools and artificial intelligence to educate a multi-disciplinary engineer.

The Faculty offers the following programmes:

Master of Science Degree in Industrial Systems

This programme is designed to produce graduates who are universally accepted as being able to
provide solutions to problems within the manufacturing, public utilities and other allied industries.
The programme covers the major areas which form the core of industrial systems engineering in
such depth and rigor as to allow students to solve novel problems in the area as well as pursue
research towards engineering or scholastic goals. Upon completion of this programme students
should be able to assess user requirements and manage the acquisition and implementation of the
various components needed to realise industrial systems as well as to research, design and develop
solutions to problems encountered in industry.

Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Industrial Systems

Industrial Systems Engineering deals with the optimization of complex processes. It focuses on
design, development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems in a
global industrial context.

This four year bachelors degree programme was developed to satisfy the needs of local and global
industries. The first two years of this programme provides the requirements for the Associate of
Applied Sciences Degree in Industrial Systems Operations and Maintenance (ADISOM) and the
latter two years culminate into the Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial Systems Degree. The intent
of the programme is to develop in the individual candidate the knowledge, skills and attitudes
necessary to function at the supervisory and management level within complex and rapidly
changing engineering environment. This programme is designed to take advantage of computer-
aided engineering tools to educate a multi-disciplinary engineer. Candidates are prepared as critical
thinkers who are able to analyse and propose novel solutions to problems.

Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechatronics

The intent of the programme is to produce graduates in Mechatronic Engineering with sufficient
academic background and demand-driven, practical know-how and experience who would be able
to rise to the challenges of a developing economy. Mechatronic Engineering is a synergy of
mechanical, electrical, electronics and computer engineering. It introduces students to the

fundamentals of Mechanics, Electrics, Electronics, and Computer Science and how these disciplines
are combined to realize automated systems that will meet current and future requirements of the
manufacturing environment.

Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Industrial Automation

Industrial automation deals with the networking and control of complex processes and systems
making them semi or fully automated. It focuses on designing, programming, implementing,
simulating, evaluating and testing automated systems in a global industrial context to realize
engineering goals.

This four-year bachelors degree programme was developed to satisfy the needs of local and global
industries. There is an increased demand for automation, instrumentation, and control engineers
globally due to the restructuring and rapid growth in new technologies and industries, as such,
industrial processes are becoming increasingly automated. The complete programme was developed
to produce a multi-skilled engineer with broad-based knowledge of the core engineering disciplines
to enable them to assess user requirements and design, evaluate and provide solutions to problems
occurring within local and global industries. The programme design places special emphasis on
relevance to industry as well as academic rigour, thereby producing industry ready leaders who are
capable of undertaking studies in engineering at the graduate level as well as solving engineering
problems in the industry.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science

This four year programme is designed to produce a cadre of graduates who are able to assess,
design, evaluate and implement smart systems to control machinery and processes that affects our
everyday life. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of artificial Intelligence and machine
learning through a rigorous approach. They will be exposed to the various technologies and
techniques involve in the design of smart systems to include robots and IOT systems.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Biotechnology

This four year programme is designed to produce a cadre of graduates who are able to analyze and
develop solutions to problems that are associated with the marine and related environment. The
programme syllabi cover areas in marine biology and biotechnology as well as marine pollution and
environmental protection. Students are also introduced to the practical areas of marine research.

Associate of Applied Sciences Degree in Industrial Systems Operations and Maintenance

The Associate of Applied Sciences Degree in Industrial Systems Operations and Maintenance is
designed to equip students with the requisite skills, knowledge and attitude, to oversee the safe
operation of machinery and equipment which are used in industrial plants and facilities. The
programme also equips students with a wide range of problem solving skills and technology. This
programme is designed to prepare students for entry into the industry at the technician level as well
as to continue studies at the Bachelors degree level.

Based on the heavy course load needed to cover the different facets of engineering, the ADISOM
programme carries intense practical component to reinforce competency and the work based portion
is condensed in a six weeks segment at the end of year two.

DURATION OF STUDY
The minimum duration of full-time study for a Bachelor’s degree shall be four years, and that of the
Associate Degree two years. Whereas, the minimum duration of part-time (Day Release) study for
a Bachelor’s degree shall be five years, and that of the Associate Degree three years.

The duration of the Masters Degree in Industrial Systems is 2 years, i.e. 18 months of classes and 6
