1.0 GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE OF WORK

The Contractor shall supply, install and test all


piping, fixtures and fittings necessary to complete
the following:

o above ground gravity sewerage system including


branch wastes, waste pipes and vent pipes
connected to the existing sewerage system.

o mains pressure potable water system including


distribution piping, fittings and fixtures
connected to existing below ground site
reticulation by others.

1.2 DRAWINGS AND APPROVALS

The Contractor shall refer to the drawings for exact


position of fixtures, plant, equipment and sundry
appliances. Any pipe runs that will be exposed to
view or permanently concealed shall be agreed with the
Engineer before any work is started.

The Contractor shall check all dimensions on site


before work is put in hand or prefabricated.

The whole of the installation shall be carried out in


accordance with the Drawings. The Engineer shall be
notified of all amendments and his approval obtained
prior to commencement of any works.

2.0 MATERIALS

2.1 PIPE IDENTIFICATION

The Contractor shall colour code all service pipes and


conduits. They shall be labelled to conform with the
requirements of ISO Standards.

All pipes in limited access ducts and ceiling spaces


and other concealed positions shall have approved
stick-on bands of the colours, direction flow and
service names as required.

The colour bands shall be 40mm wide and positioned at


a maximum of 3m centre to centre and at each change of
direction and at each branch and where nominated by
the Engineer.

2.2 VALVES

2.2.1 Valve Identification

All valves shall be permanently labelled by


engraving or equivalent identification,
suitably filled for clarity with a contrasting
colour. The finish shall be non-corroding and
suitable for the condition to be experienced.
Typical labels shall be submitted for approval.

2.2.2 Valve Accessibility

Where the valve positions are not specified on


the Drawings or lines are Site run, the
Contractor shall locate all manually operated
valves, with the exception of drain and vent
valves required for maintenance purposes only,
in positions where the valve can be comfortably
reached and operated from a floor level or
stairway.

Stems shall not be installed at angles below


the horizontal unless otherwise directed by the
Engineer.

2.3 FIXING AND SUPPORTING OF PIPES

All pipes shall be adequately supported against all


pipe forces and secured to adjacent walls and slabs
and must not come into contact with any other service
pipes. All pipework shall be fixed in a manner so as
to allow free movement without causing undue stress.
The Contractor shall provide pipe supports, hangers,
brackets, anchors and like fittings and make provision
for pipe movement.

Pipe hangers shall be installed at every change of


direction, no pipe hanger is allowed to be fixed to a
pipe clamp already supporting or supported from other
pipework.

All copper pipes shall be separated from supports by


4mm thick PVC strip or similar approved materials.

2.3.1 Pipe Hangers

Pipe hangers or brackets shall be properly


isolated where necessary to prevent vibration
and noise transmission, and special care shall
be taken in making piping connection to pumps
and other rotating equipment.

2.4 EXPANSION JOINTS

Provide expansion joints at fixed points to copper


gravity type risers, stacks and horizontal branches,
along runs where piping is subject to large variations
in temperature, where piping is installed in positions
where movement is restricted and where piping is
located under or fixed on either side of a building
construction joint.

2.5 JOINTING MATERIALS

All joints shall be cleaned free of any foreign


materials, dirt or grease. Any lubricants used, shall
be of an approved non-toxic vegetable based type and
shall be applied in accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions.

Jointing using solvent weld material, rubber rings, or


flanges or screwed connections shall be performed to
the Engineer's satisfaction, and all joints shall be
satisfactorily tested.

Where galvanised pipe is used for screwed connections,


any exposed threaded portion shall be coated with an
approved cold galvanising compound after the joint has
been screwed tight.

2.5.1 Welded Joints

Unless otherwise specified or approved field


welding shall be by manual metallic arc welding
or oxyacetylene welding.

3.0 WORKMANSHIP

The Contractor shall ensure that all valves, traps,


inspection openings and junctions are readily
accessible for maintenance after the work of other
trades.

Pipes shall not be run in cavities of external walls


or chased into walls which are not to be rendered.

Pipes set in masonry walls shall be wrapped with 15mm


thickness of building paper or equal or pre-lagged.

The Contractor shall be responsible for including all


bends and sets and installing sufficient unions,

flanges and isolating valves for satisfactory removal


of piping and fittings for maintenance or repairs.
Pipes shall be fixed in continuous lengths wherever
practicable and bent at changes of direction in
preference to using brass fittings other than areas
where fittings are required for correct fitting of
cover plates. Pipes shall be run parallel with walls,
slabs etc., with each other and all branches taken off
at right angles.

Short pipe extension pieces from walls to connecting


fixtures shall be fitted with union connections to
allow for removal of fixtures.

All pipework encased in concrete shall be wrapped with


bituminous materials, minimum of 6mm thick such that
no section of pipe is exposed to concrete.

4.0 TESTING

The Contractor shall supply all labour, materials and


equipment required to carry out all testing of the
services shown on the Drawings to the satisfaction of
the Engineer.

Enclosed works shall not be covered or concealed from


view unless it has bee inspected, tested and approved.

At least forty eight (48) hours notice shall be given


prior to the carrying out of tests, and all tests
shall be witnessed by the Engineer.

Testing shall be carried out as the work proceeds and


before insulation application or building in.

On completion of the work all pipe lines, are to be


flushed until clear and checked for leaks or damage;
taps and valves are to be inspected and re-washed if
necessary; aerators and filters/strainers are to be
thoroughly cleaned and polished and the whole, left in
good working order.

4.1 SEWER DRAINAGE

Carry out the following tests on sewerage piping to


the satisfaction of the Engineer:

(a) Water pressure tests for a minimum period of 2


hours at two (2) metre head.

(b) String line on main runs for inspection of


level and straightness.

4.2 STORMWATER

Carry out the following tests on stormwater piping to


the satisfaction of the Engineer:

(a) Water test for a minimum period of 2 hours.

(b) String lines on main runs for inspection of


level and straightness.

4.3 SANITARY PLUMBING

Water test all pipework including vents with a two


metre head of water for a period of 2 hours.

4.4 POTABLE WATER

On completion, all piping shall be subject to a water


pressure test of 1000kPa for a period of two (2)
hours. Any defects found in the system shall be
remedied and the test re-applied.

4.5 FIXTURES

All fixtures shall be filled to spill level with


water, for a minimum of two (2) hours after
installation, and visually checked for leaks.

5.0 "AS BUILT" DRAWINGS

On completion a complete and accurate set of drawings


showing Site Services, Floor Plans, Diagrammatics and
Details shall be submitted. Drawings shall indicate
the installed positions of all services, equipment,
valves, pipework, invert levels of pipes, ground level
adjacent to pipework, measurements indicating accurate
position of concealed pipework.
