1. (5 checks) Cucumis sativus (cucumber) is a diploid plant with 7 chromosome pairs. Determine the
following as its cell divides by mitosis or meiosis:
a. number of centromeres at Metaphase I _______________
b. number of univalents at Anaphase I (per pole) _______________

c. number of chromatids at Prophase _______________
d. chromosome number at Metaphase _______________
e. chromosome number at Telophase I (after cytokinesis) _______________
2. (6 checks) Consider the true diploid plant cell (2n=4) below. The paternally derived blue chromosomes
SALE
are of two types, metacentric and acrocentric. These chromosomes contain the same gene pattern and
structural features as the maternally derived purple chromosomes. Consider two genes A and B which
are found on the metacentric and acrocentric chromosome pairs, respectively. Assume the father
passed on A and B alleles, and the mother passed on a and b alleles.
b.

3. (5 checks) Consider the cross RrmmTT x RRMmTt. Assume the three gene pairs are independently
segregating.
a. Derive the gametic ratio of the second parent using the branching method. (2 checks)
b. Derive the genotypic ratio for the offspring from each cross using the branching method. Show
complete solutions. (2 checks)
c. What is the probability that an offspring from this cross will be heterozygous for all gene pairs? (1
check)

4. (7 checks) In the Primula plant, the blue flower color is due to malvidin, a pigment encoded by the
completely dominant gene (M). Presence of only the recessive gene (m) leads to white flowers. The P
locus controls pigment synthesis in the M locus such that dominant gene (P) stops pigment production,
and recessive gene (p) allows pigment production. Two plants both having the MmPp genotype were
crossed. Answer the following questions and show complete solutions to support your answers. Use
the branching method whenever applicable.
a. What is the phenotypic ratio of the offspring? (4 checks)
b. What type of gene interaction is exhibited by the flower color in Primula? (1 check)
c. What would be the probability of getting plants that are pure-breeding for blue flower color? (2
checks)

5. (7 checks) Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a disorder caused by a recessive allele. Two carrier individuals have
progeny. Answer the following questions in order and show solutions whenever relevant. Box or
highlight your final answers.
a. Indicate the gene notation. (1 check)
b. Derive the expected genotypic and phenotypic ratios. (2 checks)
c. If they have a normal child, what is the probability that he or she will be heterozygous? (2

checks)
d. If they have three children, what is the probability of having 2 affected children and one normal
child? (2 checks)
