Landscape KRMC- Bryan Health

Bryan Health was founded in 1997 when Lincoln Bryan Memorial Hospital and Lincoln

General Hospital merged. This merge led to Bryan LGH, which incorporated both previous

locations names. These two Prior locations had existed since 1926. Since then, Bryan has merged

and branch its foundation to many locations across NE including the following locations: Crete,

Grand Island, Merrick, and Kearney, ect.. . My analysis will be over Kearney Regional Medical

Clinic as they just started their merging process February of 2021.

According to Bryan’s website they are nonprofit because, “ We’re a Nebraska governed,

nonprofit health system that care for patients, educates tomorrow’s health care providers and

motivates our community with fitness and health programs, Our award-winning network of

doctors, hospitals and medical providers offers effective care; works with industry leaders to

introduce leading-edge, proven treatments to our region; and serves rural communities through

outreach clinics, mobile serves and telemedicine care. We’re always focused on providing the

personalized care and programs that make a difference in your life.” The main thing is that all

profits inevitably go back in to the organization or expand its reach to patients and provide the

best service possible.

Bryan Health’s mission statement is the following, “To advance the health of individuals

in our region through collaboration with physicians and communities.” Bryan also has core

values and beliefs that are shared among staff members. The core values are: one team, one

purpose, spread a smile, go the extra mile; live it, own it; care like crazy; motivate, appreciate;

know the way, show the way; and enjoy the journey. Bryan has four core beliefs, integrity the

foundation, service their standard, excellence their distinction, and leadership their future. These

beliefs and core values are one of the many reasons Kearney Regional Medical Center decided to

merge with Bryan.

Kearney Regional Medical Center first started to explore the collaboration in February of

2021. AS f January 1st of 2022 KRMC was fully owned by Bryan Health. Another reason KRMC

decided to merge with Bryan is because, “The collaborative approach, and the value Bryan

places on shared governance with physicians and communities, fit with the history, heritage, and

ambition of KRMC.” Even since this merger the location in Kearney is still mostly know as

Kearney Regional Medical Center, with different signage.

KRMC provides many services for most of central and western Nebraska and northern

Kansas. The location is the home to a hospital, maternity, podiatry, and orthopedics, ER, PICU,

ICU, and clinic. There is also another office under KRMC which houses the reconstructive

/cosmetic surgery and soon a dermatologist.

KRMC’s clinic offers many different types of care.  First is internal medicine which deals

with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of internal diseases.  The clinic currently has four

doctors who specialize in this area, Dr. Ghosh, Dr. Lawson, Dr. Smith and Dr. Geisler, on

average these providers see 9.5 patients each per day.

Dr. Goldfish, Dr, Dawn Murray, Dr. Chad Murray, and APRN Deena R.

Sughroue serve as the family medicine providers. These providers specialize in care that

provides continuing and comprehensive health care for individuals and family across all ages,

genders, diseases, and parts of the body. On average these providers see 23 patients each per

day.

The clinic also has a handful of specialty providers. One of the most popular specialties is

the general/ interventional cardiology department. The cardiology department is made up of four

doctors who each have a Physician’s Assistant-Certified or Advance Practice Registered Nurse

who works with them. Theses physicians include Dr. Denney and PA- C Brook Huxoll, Dr.
Landscape KRMC- Bryan Health

Ferrer and Kelsey Peterson APRN, Dr. Lanspa and PA-C Sydney Meyer, Dr. Varma and APRN

Valerie Fredericksen. KRMC also has Dr. Wudel who specializes in Cardiothoracic

surgery.  Our cardiologist patient volumes vary day to day. However, the providers also extend

their patient reach by participating in outreach clinics. Outreach clinics are when a provider gets

connected with surround clinics in different towns and see patients at their location. These

facilities include McCook, Holdrege, Cambridge, Cozad, Lexington, Gothenburg, and Alma in

Nebraska. Then Extend south down into Kansas at Imperial, Atwood, and Oberlin. The

cardiologist often works with the device and pacemaker team. This group works with people

who have a pacemaker and sets up Holter monitors for patients as an at home test. They also

work with the Echo department, which run tests with ultrasound technology. Even though the

cardiology department works with the echo team often, any provider can order a test that echo

can run on the patients.

The clinic also has a handful of general surgeons, Dr. Stade, Dr. Wheeler, and Dr.

Walsh. General surgeons focus on alimentary canal and abdominal contents including the

esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestine, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix, and

bile ducts. These doctors split their time between procedures at the hospital and consultations at

the clinic.

Patients who are needing colonoscopy or help with their gestational track come to KRMC

to have a procedure or consultation from Dr. Vasudevan. Dr. Vasudevan spends most of his time

on the hospital side doing procedures, but still come to the clinic side for consultations one a

week.

KRMC’s neurology department consist of Dr. Doss, DR. Weber and APRN Tasha Wise.

The neurology department usually has a full schedule and new patients often must wait months

before they get in.

Dr. Pinion serves as the allergy and immunology specialist. Dr. Pinion specializes in

medicine dedicated to the study, diagnosis, and treatment of immune system conditions,

including allergies and related symptoms and reactions.

The pulmonary-critical care & sleep disorders department is run by Dr. Cantral and his

PA-C Ellen Barnes. Dr. Cantral is in the clinic two- three times a week, some weeks he sees

patients at outreach facilities. His outreach locations include, McCook NE, Norton County KS,

Gothenburg Ne, and Superior Ne.

Dr. Kreiger is the gynecologist at KRMC. Gynecologists specialize in women care, from

diagnosis and treatments of diseases of the female reproductive organs. She also participates in

seeing patients at outreach locations every 3rd Wednesday of the month.

In the far northeast corner of the building is the orthopedic and podiatry office. This

office houses Dr. Bendel the Podiatry specialist. He goes to outreach clinic the 1st and 3rd

Thursday every month. Dr. Wilkinson and his PA-C Adam Schapmann lead the orthopedic side.

They go to outreach in Cambridge every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. When they are not at

outreach or serving in the clinic, they are doing procedures.

On the south side of KRMC is the ER department. The ER department is open 24/7 and is

rated a Level 3 general Trauma Center. This means they can care for trauma patients while

committing to educating staff and coordinating with local EMS systems and the state of

Nebraska. The ER department is run by Dr. Crandall, Dr. Geber, and Dr. Miller. KRMC also
Landscape KRMC- Bryan Health

has an intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit otherwise known as the ICU and

PICU.

On the vary southwest side of the build is the maternity wing. Here expecting moms

come to deliver and receive maternal care

Lastly off campus is Dr. Atchison clinic. He does all reconstructive and cosmetic

procedures. Anything that is cosmetic cannot be ran through insurance and must be paid in full.

This office will be home to the dermatologist coming late this summer.

Underneath and behind all these doctors are amazing nurses, supervisors, registration

receptionists, medical records personal, billing, dietary aids, housekeeping personal,

administration, administration assistants, a marketing team, HR, security, risk management,

switchboard, lab technicians and so much more. Without these other departments all the little

things that happen behind the scenes of patients being seen and treated would not happen. There

must be constant communication throughout all the time. Whether that be on policies and

procedures or what the day to day looks like. Based on my first impressions of the organization

there is some miss communication going on which is leading to frustration between departments.

They are also in the middle of switching to Bryan Policies which is bring on confusion between

staff members on why they must switch from their old policies to new policies. I have noticed a

common want between staff members, which is wanting more explanation and guidance from the

CEO and department leaders.
