Paul McCartney III
On December 18, Paul McCartney’s 18th solo album (Paul McCartney III) was released.
First, who is Paul McCartney? Sir James Paul McCartney (born 18 June 1942) is a 78 year old
English singer, songwriter and musician who gained worldwide fame as co-lead vocalist and
bassist for the Beatles, one of the most famous and influential band of all the time. In 10 years
of existence and only 8 years of recording career, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr
and George Harrison have released 12 studio albums et have composed around 227 songs!
Among which the famous “All you need is Love”; “Here comes the Sun”; “Yesterday”; “Hey
Jude” or the majestic “Let it be”.
One billion, this is the estimate of the number of albums sold by the Beatles around the world.
The legendary rock band is just behind Elvis Presley (at the top of the list) and ahead of
Michael Jackson. The Beatles revolutionized the world of music, touching all styles of music
to invent their own musical language. They have influenced millions of people around the
world and other rock bands.
In Rolling Stone magazine’s Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll, editors define their
“incalculable” influence. Writing for AllMusic, critic Richie Unterberger recognizes The
Beatles as ‘the greatest and most influential act of the rock age” and as the band that
“introduced more innovations into popular music than any other 20th century rock band”.
But we all know all good things must come to an end. In 1970, the band broke up and the Fab
Four start a solo career. McCartney founded a new band, Wings, and knew success during the
1970s, before continuing solo again to the present day. With the Wings, he released 7 studio
albums, and 18 on his own.
McCartney III was recorded in early 2020 at McCartney’s studio in Sussex, England while in
lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic. He began by recording the instrument he wrote the
song on, and then added further layers. All tracks are written by Paul, he is his own producer
and he plays on all instruments.
McCartney III received good critics; the album became McCartney’s first UK number-one
solo album since Flowers in the Dirt in 1989.
For my part, I really appreciated the album even if it’s difficult to reach the level of his first
solo albums. Although, the instrumental part of the album is still as pleasant and clean as ever,
Paul’s voice is nevertheless not always up to the task, which is perfectly understandable
because he’s 78 years old!
Never mind, it’s always a pleasure to listen to the new productions of my dear Paul even if it’s
more and more uncommon to see my favourite septuagenarian artists release new albums...
That’s life… But I am deeply convinced that, whatever happens, music will cross the years. In
a few years none of these 50s-80s legendary artists will be of this world, but their
masterpieces will remain and will continue to influence the futures generations.
As it happened to me, the first time I listened to the Beatles album “1”, I knew it wouldn’t be
the last time.
