"The Chieftest Mourner" is a short story written by Aida

Rivera Ford, which was first published in the Philippine

magazine, Philippine Education Magazine, in 1947. The story
follows the narrator, who attends the funeral of her uncle,
the late Don Julian, a well-respected and wealthy man in their
community. The narrator observes the various reactions of
the mourners, including her uncle's wife, his mistress, and his
children.

As the story progresses, it is revealed that the narrator's

uncle had been supporting his mistress financially for many
years. The mistress, named Paula, had been a constant
presence in Don Julian's life, and the narrator notes that she
is the only one at the funeral who seems to be truly grieving.

The narrator's aunt, who had been married to Don Julian for
many years, also attends the funeral. Although she is clearly
upset, she does not display the same level of emotion as
Paula. The narrator notes that her aunt had been aware of
her husband's infidelity but had chosen to ignore it.

The narrator also observes Don Julian's children, who are

divided over their father's affair. The eldest son is angry and
resentful towards his father, while the youngest son seems
indifferent. Don Julian's daughter, on the other hand, is
sympathetic towards her father and feels that he had been
misunderstood.

At the end of the story, the narrator reflects on the complex

relationships between the various characters and the
different ways in which they have mourned Don Julian's
death. She notes that while everyone has their own way of
grieving, it is ultimately the chieftest mourner, Paula, who
truly loved and understood Don Julian.

Overall, "The Chieftest Mourner" is a poignant and insightful

story that explores themes of love, infidelity, and the
complexities of human relationships.
