Subsea Wellhead Equipment
T he subsea wellhead housing, which provides the interface between and the support for the
casing strings and the B.O.P. equipment, has a number of important functions to perform.
These include:
1. Provide a solid foundation and pressure tight seal for the B.O.P. stack.
2. Support all the subsequent casing strings.
3. Provide a pressure tight seal and lockdown facility for the subsequent casing hangers.
Subsea wellheads are available in a number of sizes and pressure ratings ranging from 21!/4" x
2,000 P.S.I. to 13#/8" x 15,000 P.S.I.
The most commonly used subsea casing and wellhead programme would consist of 30", 20", 13#/8",
9%/8", and 7" casing strings. The last joint of 30 inch conductor casing is connected to a 30 inch housing
which provides the support structure for the high pressure wellhead and all subsequent casing strings.
Attachment for the permanent guidebase is also provided on the 30 inch housing. It is vitally impor-
tant to the entire operation that the 30 inch casing be cemented in place correctly, as the loads will
be transferred through the housing to the seabed.
The high pressure 18#/4" wellhead, which is attached to the last joint of 20" casing to be run, lands
out and is locked to the 30" housing. The 18#/4" high pressure wellhead has an external seal
profile which accepts the B.O.P. connector gasket and a number of internal seal areas and lock
down grooves which accept casing hanger lockdown rings. Figure 129 shows a typical conductor
housing, wellhead and guidebase assembly.
The B.O.P. stack would be run and latched to the 18#/4" wellhead and all subsequent casing strings
would be terminated inside the wellhead housing on specially designed casing hangers.
The 13#/8" casing hanger is designed to land off on a tapered shoulder at the bottom of the
wellhead and subsequent casing hangers land on the previous hanger or seal assembly. Special
seal assemblies are used in conjunction with the casing hangers to seal the annulus between the
casing strings. The seal sections of the seal assemblies are protected while they are run to the
wellhead and have to be energised once they have landed in the wellhead.
Two methods are used to energize the seal assemblies these are drill string weight and drill string
transmitted torque. Figure 130 shows a typical three hanger wellhead housing.
Casing Hanger
The WS11 casing hanger has an internal left hand running thread, an internal ratch-latch right
hand thread, an internal seal surface, a lock down ring and fluid flow by slots cut in the external
9-2
profile to allow for mud returns during cementing operations. The casing hanger is made up to the
left hand threaded running tool and run and landed on the wellhead. The casing is cemented in
place and the running tool retrieved by rotating to the right and picking straight up. Great care
should be used to ensure the casing hanger is landed in the correct position in the wellhead prior
to cementing. Figure 131 shows the casing hanger.
Seal Assembly
The seal assembly consists of a main body which has a lower outer seal and a ratch latch split
threaded ring. The pack off ring is installed over the body and retained in place by shear pins, cap
screws and “Z” slots. The main annulus seal is housed in the pack off ring. The shear pins have
to be sheared in order that the pack off ring can energise the main annulus seal. Figure 132
shows the WS 11 seal assembly.
Land the seal assembly in the wellhead and apply 30,000 lbs. weight down, this forces the seal
assembly into the casing hanger and the ratch latch threads will mate, the lockdown ring is
energised by the seal assembly at this time. Pick up the drill string weight leaving 10,000 lbs.
weight down and apply right hand torque to a maximum of 2,000 ft. lbs. Apply 30,000 lbs. weight
down and rotate the drill string 20 degrees to the left, which will allow the drill string weight to
shear the shear pins and energise the seal.
As the pack off ring drops down due to the drill string weight, the seal is forced over an upset on
the seal assembly body. The elastomer section of the seal is compressed forcing the metal lips
radially outward into sealing contact with the wellhead body and the seal assembly body. Rotate
the drill string a further 10 degrees to the left to lock the wear bushing in place.
Close an appropriate set of pipe rams and pressure test the seal. On completion of pressure
testing pick up the drill string weight, leaving 5,000 lbs. down, rotate the drill string 10 degrees to
the right and pick straight up to retrieve the running tool. The running procedure is the same for all
sizes of seal assembly. Figure 133 shows the seal assembly, wear bushing and running tool.
On initial testing of the seal assembly, strict attention should be paid to the amount of fluid required to
build up the initial test pressure. Pressure should build up within one half to one full barrel of fluid
pumped. If pressure does not build up within this amount, then the seal assembly could be leaking
and the annulus may be pressurised, if pumping continues the casing could be damaged.
9-3
Wear Bushing
Wear bushings are installed in the wellhead housing to protect the exposed housing sealing
areas against damage from drill pipe rotation etc. They are initially installed with, and locked to
the seal assembly, and extend to the top of the housing giving full protection.
An installation and retrieval tool is supplied which allows the removal of the wear bushings for
inspection or for installation of the next casing string. Figure 134 shows a Cameron WS 11 wear
bushing and running tool.
Lower the wear bushing to the wellhead and land with 5,000 lbs. down. Rotate the drill string to
the left until a slight drop is noticed then rotate a further 10 degrees to lock the wear bushing in
place, apply 5,000-10,000 lbs. overpull to confirm that the wear bushing is locked in place. Re-
lease the overpull and then rotate the drill string 10 degrees to the right and pick straight up to
retrieve the running tool.
The 13#/8 x 9%/8 Boll Weevil type test tool is a simple plug type tool which has one end designed to
land and seal in the 13#/8" seal assembly and the other end designed to land and seal in the 9%/8"
seal assembly. Lip type seals are used which seal in the main body of the seal assembly. A Boll
Weevil test tool is also available which lands and seals in the 7" wear bushing and another for
landing and testing in the 7" seal assembly. Figure 136 shows a Boll Weevil test plug.
9-4
VETCO SG 5 TORQUE SET SYSTEM
The Vetco SG 5 system utilises drill string transmitted torque to energise the seal assembly. The
casing hanger has an internal left hand running thread, an internal seal profile, an external right
hand seal assembly thread, an external seal profile, external fluid flow by slots and an external
lock down ring. The casing hanger and seal assembly are run together on a single trip installation
and test tool. Figure 137 shows the casing hanger.
Seal Assembly
The seal assembly consists of a threaded pack off ring and a compression type seal. The com-
pression seal section consists of an elastomer compression element and four metal lip seals and
is retained to the pack off ring by a retainer ring. The threaded pack off ring has four internal
vertical slots which mate with torque keys on the running tool. As torque is applied to the pack off
ring the compression element expands the metal lip seals outward into sealing contact with the
wellhead body and the casing hanger. Figure 138 shows the seal assembly.
Running Procedure
The casing hanger is placed in the rotary table and the seal assembly made up to the external right
hand thread. The seal assembly would be screwed onto the casing hanger such that the distance
from the bottom edge of the seal to the shoulder on the casing hanger is between 2!/2 inches to 2(/16
inches. The running tool would be made up to the drill string and lowered into the casing hanger,
ensuring that the lead threads on the running tool and the casing hanger are aligned and that the
torque keys on the running tool align with the torque slots on the seal assembly pack off ring.
The drill string would be rotated to the left approximately four turns until tight. The measurement
between the bottom of the seal and the shoulder on the casing hanger should now be between
4!/8 and 4!/2". This clearance ensures fluid flow past the seal during cementing operations. The
assembly would then be run in and landed on the wellhead. After cementing operations are
complete, the drill string is rotated to the right approximately 8 turns and 15,000 ft. lbs. torque
applied to energise the seal. Close the appropriate set of pipe rams and pressure test the seal.
The running procedure is the same for all sizes of casing. Figure 139 shows the casing hanger,
seal assembly, and the running tool.
If the full eight turns of the drill string is not achieved during make up of the seal assembly and if
doubts exist, an elevation check tool can be run into the wellhead to verify the pack off ring position.
9-5
The tool has four hydraulic pistons with lead impression blocks attached. The tool is run and
landed on the casing hanger. 500 P.S.I. drill pipe pressure is applied which energises the pistons
and an impression of the top of the pack off ring is taken. Lead impression pins are provided to
confirm that the tool is correctly landed on the casing hanger. The tool would then be retrieved and
a measurement taken from the landing point on the tool to the impression. This measurement
confirms the exact position of the pack off ring relative to the casing hanger.
PORRT
Should the seal assembly fail, a special seal assembly retrieval and installation tool known as a
pack off running and retrieving tool is available. This tool is used to run and retrieve the seal
assemblies independently from the casing hanger. Figure 140 shows the PORRT.
Test Tools
The Vetco SG5 system test tool is a simple plug type tool designed to land and seal in either the
wellhead body, prior to any wear bushings or casing hangers being installed, or in the casing
hangers. The wear bushing must be retrieved prior to running this test tool.
A modified wear bushing and test tool is available which allows testing of the system with the wear
bushing in place. Figure 141 shows the SG5 test plugs.
Wear Bushings
The wear bushings are run on a special installation and retrieval tool which fits all sizes of wear
bushing. The wear bushing has four external pins which lock into horizontal slots in the pack off
ring. The wear bushing running tool has a closed hydraulic system which is required to release
the running tool from the wear bushings and four external torque pins used to rotate the wear
bushing into place in the wellhead.

MS-700 Family of Subsea Wellheads
Able to test the BOP stack at any time - before or after running
hangers, wear bushings, or nominal seat protectors
Able to conduct a full stack pressure test with the Isolation Test
Tool while the nominal seat protector is in place
The newest members of the MS-700 Family of Subsea Wellheads are the High Capacity HC MS-700
and the S uper high capacity SMS-700. These wellheads were specifically designed for the rigorous
demands of the deep water, high pressure wells being drilled today with the future in mind.
Both the wellhead housing and each hanger have a sealing area of parallel “wickers”, or V-grooves. After
the seal is positioned, it is set by forcing the energizing ring between the metal “U” seal, expanding it into
the wicker profiles. This expansion causes the wickers to bite into the softer metal of the seal, and imparts
energy into the hanger neck and housing body to preload each wicker interface higher than the rated
pressure. The “biting” action can fully seal, even with serious damage to both the seal and wickers. In
essence, a 1 inch wide band of wickers offers multiple independent metal seals which together form the
primary all-metal seal. This action yields a long term seal that cannot lose elastic energy due to
temperature extremes or exposure to corrosive fluids.
When the High Pressure (HP) housing and 20" casing string are run, the
housing lands out and latches into the internal profile of the conductor
housing. At initial contact of the housings, full engagement is achieved at High Pressure
the upper socket. As the rig slacks weight off the drillstring, the weight of Housing
the 20" casing string displaces the HP housing downward until contact
occurs at the lower socket. The tapered socket interface design of the Latch Assembly
housings provides high bending load capacity for most applications.
Tapered Socket
For high current conditions or deepwater service, the Bootstrap tool may Profile
be used to further improve fatigue resistance. After the casing is cemented
and the running tool is released from the housing, two simple overpulls of MS-1 Seal
the drillstring actuate the Bootstrap tool. The tool “bootstraps” the two
housings together with 1.2 million pounds of force to achieve full surface Low Pressure
contact at both tapered sockets, ensuring that all bending loads are Conductor
transmitted directly into the conductor housing and carried fully by the
conductor string. One more pull on the drillstring releases the tool for
Casing Hanger
recovery to the surface, leaving the wellhead rated for maximum bending
loads and ready for completion.

WELLHEAD SYSTEM FEATURES
GENERAL SYSTEM
• Simple procedures.
• Simple tools.
• No left-hand rotation.
• No high torque.
18-3/4" WELLHEAD
• The Wellhead has a seal area above the 13-3/8" or 9-5/8" wear
bushing that allows the use of an Isolation Test Tool when testing
the BOP stack. It is not necessary to pull the 13-3/8" or 9-5/8"
wear bushings to use the tool.

WELLHEAD SYSTEM FEATURES
WELLHEAD RUNNING TOOLS
• All Wellhead running tools are a cam actuated mechanism. The
running tools rotate to the right to release from the Wellheads.
• The running tools have ample air exhaust and/or jet return ports.
CASING HANGERS
• All casing weights and pressure loads are transferred to the 13-3/8"
Casing hanger at the bottom of the Wellhead. Individual mecha-
nisms on each hanger that must be at a precise elevation in the
Wellhead are not required.
• All Casing Hangers are designed for 15,000 PSI working pressure,
and H2S service.

WELLHEAD SYSTEM FEATURES
SEAL ASSEMBLY
• The Seal Assembly provides a true dual metal-to-metal seal be-
tween the Casing Hanger and the Wellhead.
• The Seal Assembly has resilient back-up seals. The resilient seals
are trapped between the metal seals and can never extrude.
• The Seal Assembly is run with the Casing Hanger, and can be set
before the cement cures. An extra Wellhead washing trip is not
required.
• The dual metal Seal lips are protected while running and cannot be
damaged when passing through the riser and BOP stack.
SB 01
119711 SS-15 SUBSEA WELLHEAD SYSTEM Page 3
® 18-3/4" SS-15 15,000 PSI SUBSEA
WELLHEAD SYSTEM FEATURES
• An Emergency Seal Assembly is available if required. It uses
metal lips and radially squeezed elastomer on the O.D. and I.D.
O-rings are not used. It is installed on the Casing Hanger in the
same manner as the standard Seal Assembly.
• The same Seal Assembly fits all Casing Hangers 13-3/8" and
smaller.
• One running tool runs all Casing Hangers, 13-3/8" and smaller, on
drill pipe, in a single trip. No clean out trip is required because the
Seal Assembly is run with the Casing Hanger.
• The tool holds the Seal Assembly well above the Casing Hanger
during cementing. This provides a large flow-by area around the
hanger seal surface.
• To run the Casing Hanger and Seal Assembly; land the hanger and
cement, rotate the running string six (6) turns to release the run-
ning tool from the hanger and the Seal Assembly automatically
drops into a sealing mode on the hanger. Pressure test and pick
straight up to recover the running tool.
• The running tool seals in the Casing Hanger to allow a full test of
the Seal Assembly and the BOP stack.

WELLHEAD SYSTEM FEATURES
WEAR BUSHINGS 18-3/4" X 13-3/8" AND SMALLER
• The Wear Bushings allow testing of the BOP stack, with the Wear
Bushing installed in the Wellhead. It is not necessary to pull the
Wear Bushing to use either the Isolation Test Tool or the Cup Test
Tool. This saves two trips per BOP stack test.
• The Wear Bushings are locked down to the Seal Assembly with
eight (8) spring loaded shear pins, which snap into a groove in the
Seal Assembly.
• To run any Wear Bushing, land it on the Casing Hanger using the
Multi-Purpose Tool. Pick straight up and overpull 30,000 pounds
to shear the pins in the Multi-Purpose Tool adapter and recover the
tool.
• The Multi-Purpose Tool runs and retrieves the Bore Protector and
all Wear Bushings.
• The Multi-Purpose Tool allows testing of the BOP stack, and the
Seal Assembly simultaneously, by use of a cup tester. (A Drill
Pipe Release and Test Tool can also be run with this assembly to
allow the blind/shear rams to be tested on the same trip.)

WELLHEAD SYSTEM FEATURES
B.O.P. ISOLATION TEST TOOL 18-3/4"
• The BOP Isolation Test Tool allows testing of the BOP stack and
the Wellhead Housing, after the Bore Protector is removed from
the Wellhead (The Test Tool has a thread-on adapter which sits on
the Wellhead lower shoulder.)
• The Isolation Test Tool allows testing of the BOP stack with the
13-3/8" or 9-5/8" Wear Bushing installed. The tool sits atop the
Wear Bushing and seals in the Wellhead I.D. above the Wear
Bushing. This method tests the BOP while isolating the Casing
Hanger Seal Assembly from test pressure.
• The Isolation Test tool can also be used in the Wellhead on top of
a Casing Hanger body. The Seal Assembly remains isolated from
test pressure.
• The Seal Assembly Running Tool also runs the Emergency Seal
Assembly using the same procedure as the Standard Seal Assembly.
