Reflection Paper No. 1 – Resonant Leadership

Gil R. Orense

As a leader in a private sector technology company that serves the government, it is

crucial for me to exemplify resonant leadership qualities that emphasizes emotional

intelligence, empathy, and the development of strong relationships with team members.

This kind of leadership is essential in the modern world, where leaders must be adaptive,

agile, and resilient to succeed.

The 31 Effective Leadership Activities for Developing Great Leaders is a wonderful

resource for any leader wishing to develop their leadership skills. The activities give a

realistic and effective way to enhance leadership qualities, improve team dynamics, and

promote productivity. Being in the technology industry, I appreciate the value of

enhancing my leadership abilities consistently. I feel that by implementing these activities,

I will be able to become a more adaptable and resonant leader and create greater results

for my team and the organization.

In this reflection paper, I will focus on three leadership activities that I believe can have a

significant impact on my leadership practice. These activities are Heard Seen

Respected, Team Canvas, and Letter from the Future. I will explain why I believe each

activity can deepen my personal or adaptive practice of leadership and how it can help

me strengthen my leadership. I will also provide examples of how I can apply each activity

in my role as a leader.
The Heard Seen Respected is a powerful activity that can deeply enhance a leader's

adaptive and resonant leadership skills, especially in the industry where I belong. The

activity involves standing in the shoes of others, practicing empathy, and ensuring that

everyone on a team is heard, seen, and respected. In this activity, participants shift

between telling stories where they were not heard, seen, or respected and then being

listeners who do not pass judgment. By participating in this activity, I will have the

opportunity to reflect on my own experiences and improve my ability to empathize and

respect the opinions of others, which is an essential leadership skill in the public sector.

As a leader, I face many challenges related to communication and teamwork. For

example, there may be times when team members have differing opinions on a project,

and it can be challenging to make sure that everyone feels heard and respected. Similarly,

I may face difficulties in understanding the perspectives of team members who come from

different backgrounds or have different experiences than my own. By participating in the

Heard Seen Respected activity, I will be able to reflect on these challenges and develop

strategies to overcome them.

One scenario where the Heard Seen Respected activity could be applied is in a meeting

where team members are discussing a project's design. Suppose one team member's

idea is continually being dismissed or talked over by other team members. In that case,

the activity could help the team member feel more heard and respected. By listening to

the team member's story and empathizing with their situation, the team could work
together to develop a solution that incorporates the team member's idea. Through this

process, the team would be better able to work collaboratively and effectively.

Overall, the Heard Seen Respected activity can deepen my personal and adaptive

leadership practice by improving my ability to empathize with team members and ensure

that everyone is heard, seen, and respected. By participating in this activity, I can develop

strategies to overcome communication and teamwork challenges and build a more

inclusive and supportive work environment.

The Team Canvas activity is a great technique that will assist me in enhancing my

personal practice of leadership. The exercise provides team members the chance to co-

create and define everything from team objectives, values, assets, and rules. By including

every member of the team in this process, leaders can facilitate meaningful collaboration

throughout the entire business, tap into collective intelligence, and build a sense of shared

ownership.

Team Canvas activity can be applied in various ways to strengthen my leadership style.

For instance, it can be used to align team members around a common vision and purpose.

By involving team members in the process of defining team goals and values, leaders

can ensure that everyone is working towards a common objective, which fosters a sense

of belonging and purpose among team members.

In addition, the Team Canvas activity can also help to identify and address potential

issues within the team. By defining team assets, leaders can identify areas of strength
and weakness within the team, and take steps to address any gaps. This can help to

ensure that the team is well-equipped to handle any challenges that may arise in the

future.

By involving team members in the process of defining team goals, values, assets, and

rules, leaders can enable true collaboration throughout the organization, align team

members around a common vision and purpose, enhance communication and

collaboration within the team, practice empathy and active listening, and identify and

address potential issues within the team.

The Letter from the Future activity is a wonderful tool that involves imagining the future,

thinking creatively, and engaging with a vision that inspires and motivates us to achieve

our goals. By engaging in this activity, leaders can hone their strategic thinking and

enhance their ability to communicate a compelling vision to their teams and stakeholders.

One way this activity can benefit leaders like me is by providing a framework for thinking

creatively about the future. By imagining what the world will look like in five years, we can

start to see the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. This exercise can help to

uncover insights and ideas that might otherwise go unnoticed, providing a fresh

perspective on the organization's goals and objectives. For instance, as a technology

leader, I might envision a future where data privacy regulations become more stringent,

and this could the team to implement new security measures or invest in data privacy

technologies.
Furthermore, the "Letter from the Future" activity can also help me to articulate our vision

in a compelling way. By asking team members to write a letter detailing what the group

has accomplished in that time and how they overcame any challenges, I can gain valuable

insights into my team's aspirations, values, and priorities.

This activity can also help me to refine my communication skills, as I should convey our

company’s vision in a clear and persuasive manner. For example, I can inspire the team

by writing a letter detailing a future where technology is used to improve citizens' lives,

and this might motivate team members to work harder to achieve this vision.

By encouraging leaders to think creatively about the future, articulate a compelling vision,

and foster a sense of shared ownership, the Letter from the Future activity can help me

to enhance strategic thinking, communication skills, and team motivation.

In conclusion, the three chosen leadership activities - Heard Seen Respected, Team

Canvas, and Letter from the Future - all enhance resonant leadership qualities that are

crucial for my success as a leader in the technology industry serving the public sector.

These activities offer unique approaches to building stronger relationships with team

members, promoting collaboration and accountability, and inspiring a shared vision for

the future.

Overall, these three leadership activities offer practical and effective ways to deepen

personal practice and exhibit adaptive and resonant leadership. By practicing empathy

and respect, promoting collaboration and shared ownership, and inspiring a shared vision

for the future, I can build stronger relationships with my team members, foster a positive

work environment, and make them achieve greater success in their roles.
