III- Write the answer of the following questions.
Q1. Think of appropriate words to describe the three children.
Give a reason for each of your choices.
(a) Bobbie (e.g. practical: She shows Peter how to tear the
petticoat.)
(b) Phyllis
(c) Peter
Ans. Bobbie – Bobbie was a practical girl. She helped Peter in
making flags. She was very courageous and confident girl. She
was also very daring as she didn’t care of her life and put all
her efforts to stop the train and got succeeded.
Phyllis- Phyllis was somehow nervous and confused in her
nature. She felt that the landslide was because of some magical
power. Instead of her nervousness, she tried her best to help
her friends in their efforts to stop the train.
Peter- Peter was full of leadership skills. He acted as a leader of
the team. He took initiative to make flags with flannel
petticoats and decided to wave the flag himself to stop the
train. These were Peter’s efforts that he led the team and they
managed to stop the train successfully.

Q2. What do you think caused the rock and the trees to get
uprooted and crash into the railway track below?
Ans. The rocks and the trees got uprooted and crash into the
railway track due to heavy rain and storm.
Q3. Why do you think the children chose to make red flags?
Would it have mattered if they had chosen another colour?
Ans. The children chose to make red flags to wave against the
upcoming train to warn the engine driver. The railway track
was blocked by uprooted trees and rocks. The red colour
usually symbolizes the danger. If they had chose any other
colour, it might not convey the right message to the engine
driver.
Q4. How do you think the engine driver and the passenger must
have felt when the children told them why they had stopped
the train?
Ans. The engine driver and the passengers must have felt
scared and horrified. But after observing the situation, they felt
relaxed when the children told them that the danger is now
averted.
Q5. Do you think Bobbie was foolish in standing on the track
and waving her flag? What could have made her faint at the
end of the story?
Ans. No, Bobbie was not foolish in standing on the track and
waving her flag. She was daring and very practical girl. She
decided to stand on the track and wanted to gave her best to
avoid the frightful accident. Although she succeeded, but due
to extra stress on her mind she got a sudden shock and got
fainted.
