The Wine Advocate, February 2011, Issue 193 Owner/ winemaker David Ramey produces t wo levels of Chardonnay his generic appellation cuvees and his single vineyard offerings from three top sites, the Hudson, Hyde and Ritchie vineyards. As for the generic wines, the 2008 Chardonnay Carneros (86) reveals straightfor ward notes of citrus and spicy oak in a medium-bodied format. It does not possess the focus, clarity or complexity of his Russian River and Sonoma Coast bottlings. The 2008 Chardonnay Russian River (89) has more to it, including aromas of buttered citrus and crushed rock, good acidity and a fresh, medium to full- bodied, elegant style. Drink this well-made, fairly-priced 2008 over the next 2-3 years. Even better is the 2008 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast (90), which offers up notes of crushed rocks, w axy brioche, white peaches, white currants and buttered citrus. This fresh, mediumbodied wine possesses both flavor authority and finesse. It, too, can be drunk over the next 2-3 years. Normally I see more stylistic differences bet ween the Hudson and Hyde Chardonnays, but in 2008, they are more similar than usual. The 2008 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard (93) exhibits honeyed citrus, smoky hazelnut and buttered brioche characteristics in a medium to full-bodied, flavorful, rich, layered format. It should drink nicely for 4-5 years. The 2008 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard (93) reveals a fragrant bouquet of caramelized citrus, tropical fruits and subtle smoke as well as medium to fullbodied flavors, good acidity and a crisp mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 4-6 years. The medium to full-bodied 2008 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard (92) offers scents of pineapples, pears, honeysuckle and subtle spicy oak. With good po wer, density and richness, it should drink nicely for 4-5 years. Although they are difficult to sell, two wines not to be underestimated are Ramey s Syrahs. The 2007 Syrah Sonoma Coast (92) (aged 22 months in 100% ne w Franois Frres barrels) exhibits classic Northern Rhone-like notes of roasted meats, black olives, blackberries and pepper. Deep, rich, masculine and che wy with a full-bodied mouthfeel as well as abundant concentration and depth, it should provide pleasure over the next decade or more. Even better is the compelling 2007 Syrah Rodger s Cre e k Vineyard (94). Absolutely sensational, it offers notes of bacon fat intermixed with roast beef, spice box, pepper, coffee, blackberry and camphor. Full-bodied, fleshy, dense and w ell- endo wed, this is a beauty to enjoy over the next decade or more. The 2008 Syrah Sonoma Coast (88-90) reveals notions of roasted herbs, chocolate, red and black fruits and spice. It is not as complex or nuanced as the 2007, but it had not yet been bottled. Outrageously opulent, thick, inky and impressive, the 2008 Syrah Rodger s Cre e k Vineyard (93-95) displays notes of lard, ink, graphite, blackberries and cassis. This opulent, full-bodied, thick, juicy Syrah should drink w ell for a decade or more.

"Five to seven years old is the sweet spot for my chardonnays but they plateau for a while after that," David Ramey told me in March. To make the point we tasted bottles of his 2001 Russian River Valley and Hudson bottlings, both of which were still energetic and mineral-driven, with serious heft. "Chardonnay is the red wine of whites if it's made right," he said. "There's a texture that it can achieve that's sometimes more serious than pinot noir, and it can handle the richest foods." We talked about the ongoing debate over alcohol levels and what he called "the narrow obsession with that particular number. Why not talk about pH instead?" he asked. "That's even more important for the impression the wine gives when you drink it. Alcohol has always been the bogeyman in the U.S. and this is just another manifestation of that obsession."
2008 Ramey Wine Cellars Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard Russian River Valley
Vivid gold. Ripe pear, orange zest and smoky minerality on the nose. Deeply pitched but energetic, offering bright orchard fruit flavors and a deeper note of peach pit. Then spicy, dry and penetrating on the finish, which features notes of iodine and bitter herbs. Shows an intriguing blend of richness and vivacity and should be even better with a few years of bottle age. 94
2008 Ramey Wine Cellars Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard Sonoma Coast
Glass-staining purple. Highly complex nose and palate feature black and blue fruits, spicecake, floral oil and smoky minerals. Shows seductive sweetness, excellent depth and a pliant, seamless texture. Fine-grained tannins add shape to the extremely long, spicy finish. This wine's intensity and focus are outstanding. This was just bottled so it saw over two years of barrel aging. Ramey is intrigued by the possibilities of extended elevage for syrah and intimated that he might push his 2009s even farther out. 94
92-94
2009 Ramey Wine Cellars Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard Sonoma Coast
Glass-staining purple. Wild, exotically perfumed aromas of dark berries, mocha and Moroccan spices, plus a whiff of incense. Then velvety and seamless in the mouth, with an alluring sweetness to the dark berry compote, spicecake and violet pastille flavors. Pliant in texture but with good nervy spine contributing definition. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and a whiplash of candied flowers. This is aging in 100% new French barriques. 93-95
2008 Ramey Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard Oakville Napa Valley
Inky purple. Highly perfumed aromas of blackcurrant, cherry-cola, cracked pepper, roasted coffee and rose oil. Then suave and expansive in the mouth, with an alluring sweetness to the complex flavors of dark berry preserves, candied licorice and tobacco. This rich but energetic cabernet really stains the palate but shows no excess weight. Finishes sweet and extremely long, with resonating floral and cherry notes. 94
2009 Ramey Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard Oakville Napa Valley
Inky purple. Dark berries and cherry-cola are complemented by notes of cracked pepper and a hint of candied licorice on the nose. Then concentrated and velvety in the mouth, with nicely delineated flavors of red- and blackcurrant, smoky herbs and bitter chocolate. Deep but fine-grained cabernet with firm structure, intense finishing thrust and a surprisingly refreshing coda of tangy acidity. This should be a keeper. 94-96
91 Ramey Chardonnay Napa Valley Carneros Hudson Vineyard 2008 Complex aromas of hazelnut, citrus blossom, spice and lemon meringue give this a
tight flavor focus. This is medium-to full-bodied, with a long, clean, lingering finish. Drink now through 2017.JL 93 Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Pedregal Vineyard 2008 A rich, potent, tightly wound and focused effort, with tiers of mineral, currant, dried berry, sage, black licorice and toasty herb flavors. This unfolds slowly, opening gradually to more layers and dimensions. Best from 2013 through 2022.JL
David Ram mey was driv ving on a dusty road through the land of tequila and mezcal when he e had what he describes as his "coup de foudre" h otherwise known as his road-t to-Mexicali momenta and realized, improbably, that he wanted to make wine. "I suddenly thou ught, wine nd makes people happy," he says. "An it's the intersection of art an n nd commerce." For a California guy who'd re ecently gradua ated from Santa Cruz with a degre in American literature, z ee there wouldn't seem to be anything pr b reordained about this choice, whic entailed returning to ch school to catch up on chemistry and other n a courses he'd disdained as an unde h ergraduate before enr rolling in the oenology depa o artment at UC Davis, the West Point of the Califo ornia wine A NUANCED VISION | Hyde Vineyards in Napa, source off a great Ramey hardonnay B pect, it was a brilliant Ch industry. "Could I get higher sco om ores by making riper, less acidic wines?" he says, as h sips a less acidic " he wine es?" he says, as he sips a glass of his '08 Russian River s Char rdonnay at Sp poonbar in Hea aldsburg, Calif "Absolutely." Gruff f. " tends to be his na atural tone of v voice. He paus to check o the ses out erant crowd at the bar. Afte years as a sleepy t er fashionable, exube kwater frequen nted by farme and ex-hip ers ppies, Healdsb burg is back sudd denly the kind of place wher you see peo re ople in Prada eating tapas. "You can't drink these he eavy, fat wines he says. "O the s," On other hand, you do have to go to the other ex on't xtreme just because there are wines of exces w ss." Which is to say that Mr. Ramey's wine for all their precision and restraint, tend to be o es, d more come e-hither than th Old World counterparts, his Chardonna just a little more voluptuo than the av heir ays ous verage Puligny-Mo ontrachet, his cabs less tannic than the typ c pical Mdoc. M Ramey is pr Mr. roud to be a C California winem maker, happy to be the beneficia of the climat and while he loves French wines, he's not trying to imit ary te, h tate them. After his st tage at Ptrus, the mothership of Merlot, Mr Ramey went to Matanzas C r. t Creek, where h made some of the he first serious Napa Valley Merlots. Movin on to Chalk Hill, he garne red attention fo his Chardon s ng k or nnays. He went on to t make accla aimed Caberne et-based wines at Dominus and Rudd, while founding his e s e eponymous winery in 1996. Initially Ramey Ce ellars specializ zed in Chardon nnay, made fr rom purchased grapes from some of the cooler vineya d m ards in Sonoma. I still remembe the first one I tasted at th French Lau er e he undry in Yount tville, a racy, m mouthwatering Hyde g Vineyard chard, having been steered to it by the sommelier. Mr. Ra mey continued to work for Rudd, garnering some c b o d g stellar scor from the critics, before finally devoting himself full-tim to his own wines, at a w res c me winery he built in the ridiculously picturesque town of Healds y t sburg in Sonom And he's jjustifiably prou of the fact t ma. ud that he and his wife, s Carla, who he married at Ptrus, ow the whole operation, and t om wn that they didn' t start with a large fortune d derived
from anoth industry. "Y her You've got meg ga-millionaires buying their w in," he say "and you've got young, sc way ys, e crappy winemaker making tiny amounts of win rs a ne that's hard to find on the market. Then there are you big corporat conglomerat e n ur te tes. By contras we're like a chefst, staurant." Fort tunately it's a chef-owned restaurant wh hich, though not huge, ha enough seats to as owned res accommod date demand. Ramey Ce ellars is too big to qualify as a cult winery and too small to make the R g Rameys rich. B the conser But rvative business model, which might have se m m eemed a bit fr rumpy five or six years ago may be the perfect one f the o, for postcrash economy. Lik his winemaking style, his pricing ha always bee restrained compared with his ke h as en s', r w at competitors given the relative critical acclaim his wines receive. Now, as some wineries tha once turned away e customers for $200 bottles of cab are secretly cuttin deals and a ng accumulating in nventory, Mr. R Ramey is more than s cious 2007 Napa Valley Claret, a Cabernet Sauvignondo t ominated Bord deaux blend, se for ells holding his own. His delic around $40 and it's ready to drink at thi moment, unlike many of the big cabs from that excellent vintage. (He m 0, y is e m makes more comp plex and expensive cabs, too, the single-v vineyard Pedre egal from Oakv ville being the rarest and dearest.) "I've lived through three cycles of the California wine industry," Mr. Ramey says. "We had reces t c C ssions in '91 a '92 and and again in '02 and '03." While he ad dmits that the recent econom slowdown b r mic briefly depresse sales, he h his ed had e I w s e best year ever in 2010. It doesn't hurt that the man whose name is on the bottle is on the road a good part of the year, mee eting restaurate eurs and reta ailers. "A lot of my colleag ues haven't w o worked hard e enough to est tablish themselves in the market he says. s t," For a wine emaker, Mr. Ra amey seems to be an uncom o mmonly good bu usinessman, b his decision to make Syra may but n ah have been a case of listening to his hea more than his head. In 200 Mr. Ramey p art 02 planted two Sy yrah vineyards on the ern st s Syrahs of the n northern Rhne The e. cool weste side of the Sonoma Coas appellation, inspired by his love for the S resulting wineshave been lavishly prais by the critics. But, as ma of his colle w n sed any eagues have d discovered, Cal lifornia Syrah isn't easy to sell, and he's sca t aled back prod duction since t the '07 vintage (Wine-coun ntry joke: What's the e. difference between a cas of Syrah and a case of pne se d eumonia? You can get rid of t pneumonia I love Mr. Ra the a.) amey's Syrahs, wh hich are much more reminis scent of Cte-R Rotie than they are of the ja y ammy Barossa Shirazes, and they a make the case for this gra as convinc c ape cingly as any in California. My advice is to t ry them and bu them while t n y uy they're still unfashionable. They are great value a es. Mr. Ramey is one of thos rare winema y se akers who seem equally adep with both red and whites, but I have a s m pt ds , special fondness for his Chardon f nnays, which seem to me to strike a perfe balance be s o ect etween the elu usive virtues of white f Burgundy and the hedon nistic pleasures of Chardonnays from the G s Golden State. Imagine if Christie Brinkley spoke h, es. s French. Oh wait, she doe Mr. Ramey should consider hiring her as spokesmodel.
