Statement of Purpose
“Every new experience brings its maturity and greater clarity of vision” Indira
Gandhi. When I was studying at elementary school, my family build a one-story house in the
west of Kabul, girders were used for the structure. How the structure was designed and
constructed got my attention. How the structure stands strong? I was curious and thinking
about it till the moment it became a vision of being a Civil Engineer, the vision got into gaol
of being a structural engineer as a reality. Yes, My aim is to work as a structural engineer,
getting my master’s degree in structural engineering, I am going to do my part for the
development of great Afghanistan, to make a small change in a small part of my society that
was effected several decades from wars, has never found any chance for development, which
required the Engineer to work on various infrastructure projects with construction’s
companies. Doing a master’s at the polytechnic university of Turin will help me to achieve it.
Due to different problems, my parents were suffering from poverty and leishmaniosis
for 3 years, I was doing a part-time job in tailoring besides going to school, many times got
thinking to leave school and work full time, but the only thing which inspired me to keep
going was the vision of being a Civil Engineer. After graduating from high school. Finally, it
was time to take a big step toward my goal as a Civil Engineer to write the entrance exam
(Kankor). Qualified for faculty of civil engineering at Kabul University with 327.27/360,
stood at 214 ranks among 169529 in 2017. That is how my dream came true. I started the
journey which was going well. During the second semester, I got Indian Council for Cultural
Relation scholarship enrolled at the National Institute of Technology Calicut in India.
In addition, the course curriculum. I did my final project on ‘Durable Mix Design using
Combined Aggregate Gradation Bands and Blended Cement’ in a team with four members.
The objective was to create a simple tool to optimize the mix design by particle packing
modeling, including aggregate gradation and blended cement. Initial activities comprised
collecting data and conducting sieve analysis to compare the particle size distribution curves
or aggregate gradation bands with each other. Consequently, combined aggregate gradation
bands are prepared by the combination of finite aggregates, and the bands are compared with
the corresponding designation in IS 383. The combined aggregate bands were prepared through
the help of a computer code utilizing iterative techniques. Combined aggregate gradation bands
of 2 to 5 sources of aggregates were compared to study whether the number of aggregates in
aggregate gradation bands makes it more suitable or not. The next step was to find the void
ratio and other related parameters to find the efficiency of particle packing. Particle packing is
analyzed by creating probable working models. 2D models of possible packing arrangements
are created with the help of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software and the area occupied by
each particle is calculated. Subsequently, the creation of their 3D models and possible packing
arrangements are analyzed to obtain the particle arrangement and properties by using an
algorithm in ParSD. Subsequently, a suitable mix design is prepared by optimizing particle
packing using EMMA. Secondary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) like Quartz powder (QP),
Rice Husk Ash (RHA), Fly ash (FA), and Micro silica (MS) are analyzed to find the proper
blend. Mix designs containing combined aggregate gradation bands and binary, ternary, and
quaternary blended cement are designed and compared for durability. I did my internship on
AutoCAD and designed a three-story shopping mall, it consist of every detail of plan, section
and frond view. Understood and experienced the usage and importance of AutoCAD design.
My purpose in taking Structural Engineering courses is to gain confidence and
knowledge in implementing codes and specifications for the design of various structures such
as huge structural buildings, bridges, and dams with stability against forces and
environmental disasters and long service life. It required me to have the technical knowledge
which is compatible with the polytechnic university of Turin’s curriculum, In addition to
theory classes, they are conducting practical classes in a laboratory to learn the application
like; Dynamics and Static instability of structures under Professor Alberto Carpinteri,
reinforced and pre-stressed concrete structures are given a project to build a simple building
in a team with 4 members to apply the principles and codes thought in the class under
Associate Professor Alessandro Pasquale Fantilli and conducting classes for an assignment
which is given for a team created three to four students to draw and report the process of
selection of material and process of design, it add me to skills and confidence.
My career goal is to work as a structural engineer to design and analyze various
structures confidently. Be able to implement it while getting exposure to the design of various
structures. To keep working and going for a developed future, and to see Afghanistan on a
new page.
Studying master’s degree in structural engineering in Italy would be a great honor
which has the biggest and oldest structures with amazing architecture and arts. When I was in
class 10, Reading about Roman Empire and Colosseum was fascinating. At times I ponder
about how rich the heritage of Italy is, having the dream to visit the Colosseum, to taste the
culinary dishes is a life dream. Besides Polytechnic University of Turin has 68 % foreign
students who come from different parts of the world with different ethnicities, cultures, and
backgrounds which will improve and allow meeting foreign students. I am so delighted to
represent my community and share its values with other societies to remove the presumption
barriers which disturb peace among various communities. I come from a society in
Afghanistan where I feel more value should be given to community services for harmony as
it brings the people together under a mutual understanding. The Polytechnic University of
Turin has been a leading institute since its establishment with having great researchers and
experts in Engineering. It is a great pleasure to be a member of the Polytechnic University of
Turin.
Eager to welcome new challenges, I hope the polytechnic university of Turin
Admission Committee allows me to build steps by step my future career. "The only way you
can predict the future is to build it." -Alan Kay
