STUDENT GUIDE: Schedule of activities for Preparation of Research Report (The Study)
–June to August 2019
NOTE WELL: This report must be written in the PAST TENSE!
Work closely with the guidelines and rubric you received in April

Chapter 1- Background to the Problem – (4-6 continuous pages)


Describe the Setting Adequately
• Appropriately introduce the concern/need/issue and its impact on the teaching and
learning interactions
• Describe the practicum setting – physical, psycho-social, curricular focus etc.
• Explain your position at the facility
• Clearly outline the concern/issue and explain what was happening that fueled your
suspicions.
• Briefly provide preliminary data to support your suspicions and establish significance
(How extensive was the problem? Who was affected? Who would benefit from intervention)
• Provide clear outline of your intentions (purpose)
• Clearly formulate 2 to 3 objectives/research questions – Think about what you found
out from your needs assessment as well as what you wanted to accomplish from your
intervention and phrase these as GENERAL questions.
• Support/justify your claims and decisions with relevant literature
• Edit your work – make good use of dictionaries, thesauruses & APA manual 6th edition
LOOKING AHEAD:
Work on literature review for chapter 2– build on literature incorporated in your
Action Learning activities up this point.

DEADLINE #1: June 10 to 14, 2019


• Submit DRAFT of Chapter 1 to Research supervisor for feedback
• Schedule consultation session with your supervisor
• Use feedback to guide chapter revision

Chapter 2 – Literature Review (5-8 continuous pages)
Work closely with Research Report Guidelines
• Edit/update Chapter 1 based on feedback from supervisor
• Introduce the chapter by
o Reminding readers of what the research was about
o Explain how the chapter is organized
• Refine Literature review
o Consult current sources (at least 75% of references must be no more than six years old,
that is 2013 onward)
o Consult credible sources – evaluate your sources (ABSOLUTELY NO Wikipedia,
Dictionary.com and such allowed)
o Provide clarity in relation to the problem and intervention strategies
o Make the link between the literature and the research questions/objectives
o Consult current and credible sources
o Give credit to sources
o Use APA referencing format consistently
o Use clear, precise and coherent language
• Close the chapter with a summary that
o gives an overall picture of what the chapter was about
o identifies the main arguments
o presents your own voice
• Let the literature and Chapter 1 guide your preparation of Chapter 3
• Edit your work – make good use of dictionaries, thesauruses & APA manual 6th edition

DEADLINE #2: June 24 to 28, 2019


• Submit draft of Chapter 2 to Research supervisor
• Schedule consultation session with supervisor
• Use feedback to guide your chapter revision

Chapter 3 – Methodology (4-7 continuous pages)


• Edit/update Chapter 2 based on feedback from supervisor
• Work closely with Research Report Guidelines

• Introduce your chapter by reminding readers of what the research was about and describing
how you have organized the chapter
• Indicate and justify your research design (ACTION RESEARCH)
• Explain /describe the needs assessment process – purpose, methodology, timeline etc.
• Clearly outline:
o Ethical considerations – How issues were addressed
o Participants/data sources - people and documents if used (Describe them, justify their
inclusion and how they were selected)
o Instruments – (Describe and justify your choice; align with your research questions)
• Explain and justify the analysis strategies/procedures/tools you used to make sense of the data
you collected via your needs assessment
• Provide a chapter summary
• Edit your work – make good use of dictionaries, thesauruses & APA manual 6th edition

DEADLINE #3: July 8-12, 2019


• Submit draft Chapter 3 to Research supervisor

• Schedule consultation session with supervisor

• Use feedback to guide chapter revision

Chapter 4 – Results (5-8 continuous pages)


• Edit/update Chapter 3 based on feedback from supervisor
• Work closely with Research Report Guidelines
• Provide an introductory paragraph that links your research interest with the needs assessment
process and findings to be discussed.
• Remind readers of your data analysis strategies in relation to your instruments and started
research questions
• Report the findings specific to each stated research question/objective
• Represent your data appropriately (statistics, summaries of results, comparisons, extracts etc. as
appropriate) in relation to the stated objectives/research questions
• Provide a chapter summary
• Begin preparing introductory and final pages – Table of contents, abstract, appendices etc.

DEADLINE #4: July 22 to 26, 2019


• Submit draft Chapter 4 to Research supervisor

• Schedule consultation session with supervisor

Chapter 5 – Conclusions and Recommendations (5-8 continuous pages)


Preparation of Chapter 5, preliminary and final pages/sections

• Edit/update Chapter 4 based on feedback from supervisor


• Work closely with your rubric and guidelines
• Introduce your chapter linking findings of needs assessment with your upcoming
recommendations for intervention
• Prepare a conclusion bearing the purpose of the study in mind, the results of the needs
assessment and the implications for these results.
• Provide a detailed intervention plan that supports your recommendation
• Justify your proposed intervention plan with findings from the needs assessment and relevant
literature
• Give credit to sources

• Use APA format consistently

• Edit your work – make good use of dictionaries, thesauruses & APA manual 6th edition

DEADLINE #5: August 5-9, 2019


• Submit draft Chapter 5 to Research supervisor

• Schedule consultation session with supervisor

August 5 to 15, 2019: Preparation of final draft

• Work closely with guidelines provided


• Check your work against the rubric
• Final editing and organizing of document

• Check to see that all areas are represented

• Check for referencing standards and language (report in the past)

• Get your report spiral bound

FINAL DEADLINE: August 12 to 15, 2019


• Submit final document using the relevant channels to the administrative assistant in the
department from which your programme/area of specialization/option is administered.
