SECTION A: Essay (50)

SECTION B: Longer Transactional Text (30)
SECTION C: Shorter Transactional Text (20)
2. Answer ONE question from EACH section.
3. Write in the language in which you are being assessed.
4. Start EACH section on a NEW page.
5. You must plan (e.g. using a mind map/diagram/flow chart/key words), edit and
proofread your work. The plan must appear BEFORE each text.
6. All planning must be clearly indicated as such. It is advisable to draw a line

through all planning.
7. You are strongly advised to spend approximately:
• 80 minutes on SECTION A
• 40 minutes on SECTION B
• 30 minutes on SECTION C
8. Number the answers correctly according to the numbering system used in this
question paper.
9. Give each response a suitable title/heading.
10. The title/heading must NOT be considered when doing a word count.
11. Write neatly and legibly.

QUESTION 1
• Write an essay of between 150 and 200 words in length (about ONE page) on
ONE of the following topics.
• Write down the NUMBER and TITLE of the essay you have chosen, for example
1.1 I own my future.
• Give your own title if your choice is QUESTION 1.2, 1.7.1 OR 1.7.2.
• Spend approximately 80 minutes on this section.

1.7 Choose ONE of the pictures on the next page and write an essay on a topic
that comes to mind. Write the question number (1.7.1 OR 1.7.2) and give your
essay a suitable title.

have chosen.

• Respond to ONE of the following transactional writing tasks.

• The body of your response should be between 120 and 150 words in length.
• Write down the NUMBER and the HEADING of the text you have chosen, for
example 2.1 DIALOGUE.
• Pay particular attention to format, language and register.
2.1 DIALOGUE
You have decided to stop using a cellphone until you have completed your
final examination. However, your friend does not agree with your decision.
Write the dialogue that takes place between you and your friend.

2.2 FRIENDLY LETTER
Your neighbour constantly plays music very loudly. His/Her actions are a
disturbance to you and your family.
Write a letter to your neighbour requesting that he/she be more considerate

and reduce the volume of the music. [30]
2.3 REPORT (PERSONAL RECOUNT)
You have witnessed an incident of bullying at your school. Your principal has
requested that you write a report on what you saw.
Write out the report. [30]
2.4 OBITUARY
Your favourite aunt has passed away. Your family has asked that you write an
obituary, paying tribute to her.
Write out the obituary. [30]

• Choose ONE of the following topics and write a short text.

Your class has decided to honour a teacher at your school by hosting a party
on the last day of the school term. The party will be held in your classroom.
You have been asked to design a special invitation card for your teacher.
Write out the content of your invitation card.

3.2 DIARY ENTRIES
Your family is moving into a new house.
Write out TWO diary entries, expressing your feelings BEFORE and AFTER
the move. [20]
3.3 INSTRUCTIONS
You have purchased a cellphone as a gift for your grandmother. Since she
has not used a cellphone before, you have decided to give her a set of
instructions on how to:
• Switch the cellphone on and off

• Make a call
• Send a text message
Write out the instructions. [20]
