The document describes the step-by-step process for designing an interior column subjected to axial load using column load tables. Factors such as effective length, bracing configuration, and strength are considered.

The steps involve determining the effective length, selecting an initial shape based on required strength, checking the strong axis capacity, and iterating the shape selection and strength checks as needed.

The effective length depends on the bracing configuration and is affected by the bracing stiffness and its location along the column. Here the effective length is directly proportional to the distance between bracings.

Module 1 Quiz Solution

Instructions

Using the column load tables, design an interior column (use lightest W shape) for a multistory
rigid frame. No bracing is provided in the plane of the frame. In the plane perpendicular to the
frame, bracing is provided a top, bottom, and mid-height of columns, and simple flexible beam-
to-column connections are used. The axial compressive load is 400 kips dead load and 1100kips
live load, and bending moments are neglected. Use A572 Grade 50 Steel.

Step 1. Factor Load

note: only dead load and live load are provided, therefore only dead and live load combinations
are considered.

Pu = 1.4  PD = (1.4)  (400 kips ) = 560 kips

or
Pu = 1.2  PD + 1.6  PL = (1.2)  (400 kips ) + (1.6)  (1100 kips ) = 2240 kips  controls

Step 2. Determine Effective Length in the Direction Perpendicular to the Plane of the Frame

Ky = 1.0 (due to simple beam-column connections)

L = 6 ft (distance between bracing)

Ky L = 6 ft

Step 3. Select Shape Based on Buckling Perpendicular to the Plane of the Frame

From Table 4-1a with ϕcPn ≥ 2240 kips, Ky L = 6 ft, and Fy = 50 ksi

Try W14x176 with ϕcPn = 2280 kips, Ag = 51.8 in2, Ix = 2140 in4, rx = 6.43 in, and rx/ ry = 1.60.

Step 4. Check Strong Axis Strength

note: W16x89 beams have Ix = 1300 in4

𝐺𝐴 = 10 (pin support at base of column)

and
∑ 𝐼𝑐⁄𝐿 (2)(2140 in4 )
𝐺𝑏 = 𝑐
= 12 ft = 5.48
𝐼𝑔 (2)(1300 in4 )
∑ ⁄𝐿
𝑔 40 ft

From Fig. C-A-7.2 (for unbraced frame)

Kx = 2.6

Calculate [Ky L]eq and compare with Ky L

𝐾𝑥 𝐿 (2.6)(12 ft)
[𝐾𝑦 𝐿]𝑒𝑞 = 𝑟 = = 19.5 ft > 6 ft ← strong axis controls
𝑥
⁄𝑟𝑦 1.60

For W14x176 with [Ky L]eq = 19 ft, ϕcPn = 1840 kips < 2240 kips X No Good

Step 5. Try Stiffness Reduction to Reduce Kx

Check elastic or inelastic buckling

𝐾𝑥 ⋅ 𝐿 (2.6)(12 ft)(12 in⁄ft) 𝐸

= = 58.23 < 4.71√ ← inelastic buckling, try inelastic 𝐾𝑥
𝑟𝑥 6.43 in 𝐹𝑦

Find Stiffness Reduction Factor (τb)

Pu 2240 kips
= = 43.24 ksi
Ag 51.8 in 2

From Table 4-13 with Pu/Ag = 43.24 ksi and Fy = 50 ksi

τb = 0.482

Determine inelastic GB

GB = (0.482)(5.48) = 2.64

From Fig. C-A-7.2 (for unbraced frame)

Kx = 2.2

Calculate [Ky L]eq and compare with Ky L

K L
y eq
=
K x L (2.2)(12 ft)
rx
=
1.60
= 16.5 ft  6 ft  strong axis controls
ry

For W14x176 with [Ky L]eq = 16 ft, ϕcPn = 1970 kips < 2240 kips X No Good

Step 6. Select New Shape

Try shape with ϕcPn ≥ 2240 kips at [Ky L]eq = 16.5 ft and with rx/ ry ≈ 1.60

Try W12x230 with ϕcPn = 2345 kips, Ag = 67.7 in2, Ix = 2420 in4, rx = 5.96 in, and rx/ ry = 1.80

Step 7. Check Strong Axis Strength

𝐺𝐴 = 10 (pin support at base of column)

and
∑ 𝐼𝑐⁄𝐿 (2)(2420 in4 )
𝐺𝑏 = 𝑐
= 12 ft = 6.21
𝐼𝑔 (2)(1300 in4 )
∑ ⁄𝐿
𝑔 40 ft

From Fig. C-A-7.2 (for unbraced frame)

Kx = 2.7

𝐾𝑥 𝐿 (2.7)(12 ft)
[𝐾𝑦 𝐿]𝑒𝑞 = 𝑟 = = 18 ft > 6 ft ← strong axis controls
𝑥
⁄𝑟𝑦 1.80

For W12x230 with [Ky L]eq = 18 ft, ϕcPn = 2230 kips < 2240 kips X No Good

Step 8. Try Stiffness Reduction to Reduce Kx

Check elastic or inelastic buckling

𝐾𝑥 ⋅ 𝐿 (2.7)(12 ft)(12 in⁄ft) 𝐸

= = 65.23 < 4.71√ ← inelastic buckling, try inelastic 𝐾𝑥
𝑟𝑥 5.96 in 𝐹𝑦

Find Stiffness Reduction Factor (τb)

𝑃𝑢 2240 kips
= = 33.1 ksi
𝐴𝑔 67.7 in2

From Table 4-13 with Pu/Ag = 33.1 ksi and Fy = 50 ksi

τb = 0.898

Determine inelastic GB

GB = (0.898)(6.21) = 5.57

From Fig. C-A-7.2 (for unbraced frame)

Kx = 2.6

Calculate [Ky L]eq and compare with Ky L

𝐾𝑥 𝐿 (2.6)(12 ft)
[𝐾𝑦 𝐿]𝑒𝑞 = 𝑟 = = 17.33 ft > 6 ft ← strong axis controls
𝑥
⁄𝑟𝑦 1.80

For W12x230 with [Ky L]eq = 17.33 ft, ϕcPn = 2283 kips > 2240 kips OK

Use W12x230
