Companies in social media do not usually report the amount of time
people use their application every day; however, studies of daily us-
age of social media have been done, and Facebook is pinnacle place
for time spent on a platform, with 58 minutes per day as the average
time spent on it. Facts reveal that 59 per cent of Facebook users are
between the ages of 18 and 34 in 2019.

The bar chart below shows the distribution of the ages of the active
Facebook users (male and female).

Below is the box-and-whisker plot representation for the female users

of Facebook. Read the plot to write down the values.
(a) Write down the modal interval for the age of female Facebook
users. [A1]

Page 3
(b) Write down the median share of the female users. [A1]
(c) Below are two parallel box-and-whisker plots for male as well
as female Facebook users. [C3]

Compare the interquartile range of ages of the female and male Face-
book users.
A survey has been done on a group of 200 males of different ages who
use Facebook most of the time. The cumulative frequency table below
shows the age (in years) of 200 male Facebook users.
(d) Draw the cumulative frequency graph. [C2]
(e) Estimate the probability that the next male who uses Facebook
is below 45 years old. [A3]
(f) Given that 40% of the Facebook users in the survey are over x
years old, find an estimate for their age, x. [A3]

The ISBN check digit is used to prevent errors while cataloging books. If
an ISBN is read and entered into an ISBN system, like a book catalog
system, by hand or with a barcode scanner, the check number read
from the entry number will be compared to a check digit calculated
from the rest of the ISBN. If both control digits are identical, the entire
ISBN, with all its numbers, is probably correctly read.

This is how it works:

• Take the first 12 digits of the ISBN, which is 13 digits long.
• Step (a): Multiply the first 12 digits individually by a number
from left to right. The first digit is multiplied by 1, the second by
3, the third digit by 1, the fourth digit by 3 and so on.
• Step (b):Add all of the multiplied answers together.
• Step (c):Divide the number obtained by 10 to get the remain-
der.
• Step (d):Take the remainder from the above step. The check
digit is zero if it’s a zero. Subtract the remainder from 10 if the
remainder isn’t zero. Your check digit is the solution to that.

Step (c) is the remainder when the number obtained from step
(b) is divided by 10.
Step (d) = comparing Step (c) with the checksum digit (the last
digit of the ISBN).
Determine the missing digits represented by the letters A, B,
C, D, E, F, and G to complete the table. [A3]
(b) Justify why the ISBN is valid in problem 3a. [C3]
(c) The ISBN of the fiction novel The Immortals of Meluha is 9789
38326015X. After the above algorithm is applied, determine
the value of X. [A2]

In this problem, you will consider the water management and backup
water supply in a community using a nearly spherical tank placed on a
tower.

Assume that the water tank is almost round and has a radius of r me-
ters. Suppose a person O is standing at a distance OC of 150m from
the tank, and he shines a laser light at two points on the tank, points A
and B, respectively. He observes that lines OA and OB are tangent to
the circle.
Also, using some techniques, he calculated the value of ∠BOC = 30◦
and ∠AOC = 60◦ .
(a) Using this information, determine the height (BC) of the tower,
correcting up to two decimal places. [D1]
(b) Show that r, the radius of the spherical tank is 46.41 m, to the
nearest cm. [D2,C2]
(c) Calculate the volume of the spherical tank to the nearest cubic
meter m3 . [D3]
(d) Given that the maximum volume possible in the water tank is
4 lakh cubic meters m3 . Identify two possible reasons for the
difference between the actual and calculated volume. [D2]

Suppose there is a town named Kamakura in Japan with a population of
1,70,000 people. The average water usage in a household per person
is given below:
The main areas in the house for water consumption are showers and
baths, dishwashing, washing facilities, and toilets. The following figures
are estimated for water use:
Shower: 10L per minute (1 person = approximately 8 minutes)
Dishwasher: 6L per person daily.
Top-load washing machine: 25 liters per person per day
Brushing teeth (tap running): 5 L per minute (use approximately 2
minutes)
Drinking/Cleaning/Cooking: 10L per day per person.
Hand Basin: 5L per person daily.
Toilet Flush (single): 12 litres per person daily.
Toilet Flush (half): 15 L per person daily.

There is an earthquake, and the water supply to Kamakura town is

disturbed. The town is dependent on the water stored in the water
tank.
(e) Discuss the water usage pattern of the households during
this time.
In your answer, you should:
Calculate the consumption of liters of water per person in
the town and the total consumption each day.
• Estimate the time before the water in the tank runs out.
• Advice the community about the activities they can do to
save some water during this period.
• Justify the degree of accuracy in time calculations. [D7,C3]

Sprinkler irrigation is a lot like natural rain as a way to apply irriga-
tion water. Water is usually distributed via a piping system. Assume a
farmer wants to use a rotation sprinkler system that waters a 15-foot-
radius circle.

(a) Assume the farmer installs a sprinkler system on the vertices

of a field in the shape of an equilateral triangle, with the water
coverage area of each sprinkler not overlapping to prevent crop
damage.

Find the area of the field that is not covered by the sprinkler
system. [D3,C1]
(b) Suppose now that the farmer arranges sprinklers on the ver-
tices of a square field. Find the area of the field that is not

Page 11
covered by the sprinkler system. [D1,C1]
(c) Compare your answers in parts (a) and (b). In your answer,
Comment on which arrangement is more efficient and propose
the most suitable arrangement. [D2,C2]

Consider the parabola, y = x2 and let L1 the line with gradient 1 be
tangent to the parabola: y = x2 . Let’s Ln be the line with a gradient
equal to n, where n is a natural number and the line Ln is tangent to the
parabola y = x2 . At each stage, the value of n varies from 1 to 2, 2 to 3,
and so on.

(a) As the value of n changes, the gradient of the tangent line Ln to

the curve changes, and we get a different point of intersection
R=(xn ,yn ) of the tangent line with the parabola y = x2 . Add the
missing values of point of intersection R = (xn , yn ) of tangent
line with the parabola y = x2 .

parabola y = x2 and L = (xn , yn ) be the point of intersection of the tan-
gent line Pn with the parabola y = x2 .

for coordinates of point L and comment on the connection be-
tween coordinates R and L. [B4]
