The Legend of Lake Toba
The Legend of Lake Toba
Once upon a time, in North Sumatera, lived a young peasant named Toba. He had no parents;
he grew up as an orphan. But he was a diligent peasant, he spent most of his time working in
the field, sometimes he would fish in a river to eat or to sell it in the market. One morning, he
decided he wanted to go fishing, then he caught a massive goldfish, its size was much bigger
than the fish he often caught. Toba was extremely delighted, the look on his face was as if he
had met the most beautiful woman in the world.
After Toba arrived back home, Toba was shocked with the fish he was cleaning. All of a
sudden, the fish he caught turned into a beautiful young princess. This young princess could
talk, “Greetings Sir, I’m a god’s curse, I’ve disobeyed the sacred law, and it is destined for me
that I will transform into any form that resembles anyone who touches me. And since you
have touched me, I will transform into a human form that looks like you,” said the princess.
The princess then thanked Toba for saving her, and as a gratitude, she was willing to be his
wife with one condition, Toba must keep a secret of where she comes from. Toba agreed to
the condition put forward, and finally, they got married.
After they got married, they had a son. They named their son Samosir. They both were
excited to be parents, they raised Samosir with great affection and nurtured him. Samosir
grew up to be a vigorous and impish child. Samosir never wanted to help his father work in
the fields. In fact, when his mother asked him just to deliver his father's lunch, he often
refused. He prefers to be at home and play. Samosir also has a very high appetite, so Toba had
to work harder to satisfy his son’s appetite. Because of Samosir's high appetite, sometimes his
family's food ration can be used up just to fill his stomach.
One day, Samosir agreed to take his father's meal to the fields after he was forced by his
mother. Samosir reluctantly walked to the fields carrying his father’s meal. However, on the
way to the field, he felt hungry and thirsty. So, Samosir ate a small bite of the meal, but he
was still hungry and not satisfied. Samosir then ate a mouthful again, until there was only a
little food and drink left for his father.
Once Samosir arrived at the fields, his father was very happy to see his son from a distance
approaching him. When Samosir gave the lunch to his father and opened it, the look on his
father's face turned annoyed, ‘why do I have so little food today?’ Ask Toba in a slightl angry
tone. His son explained that he felt very hungry on the way here. Toba was already hungry,
and he couldn’t help but berate his son and he even said harshly to his son, “You insolent
child! You are a descendant of fish!” Samosir was surprised by his father's words and was
hurt. Samosir then ran crying to his house.
Once Samosir went back to his house, his mother was shocked to see her child hysterically
crying. Samosir then told her what had happened in the fields earlier when he met his father.
Hearing the incident, the mother was disappointed with Toba for breaking his promise of not
revealing her origins to anyone, not even her son.
Eventually, the mother stood while holding Samosir's hand. In the blink of an eye, they had
disappeared. Suddenly, a strange phenomenon emerged from the footprint of Samosir and his
mother. There was a strong flow of water that could not be contained from the footprint of
both of their feet. The flow of water was so strong that the village was gradually submerged.
Finally, a lake was formed due to this. This lake was called Lake Toba, and the small islands
in the middle were called Samosir Island to commemorate this boy.
