NATURE OF BIOSTATISTICS (pp.

7-9)

1.1 For each of the following variables, indicate whether it is qualitative or quantitative. For
quantitative variables, further categorize them into either the discrete or continuous type.

a. sex
b. hospital bed capacity
c. blood glucose level (in mg/100 ml)
d. systolic blood pressure
e. height (in cms.)
f. blood type
g. per capita income
h. household size
i. mid-upper arm circumference (in cms.)
j. region

1.2 Describe how each of the following variables can be measured using the nominal, ordinal and
ratio scale of measurements:

a. socio-economic status
b. nutritional status
c. anemia status
d. educational attainment
e. distance of household from the nearest health center

1.3 Indicate whether each of the following is a technique or tool in descriptive or inferential
statistics:

a. bar graph of the ten leading causes of morbidity in Manila

b. an estimate of the proportion of 3 malnourished preschoolers derived from a

prevalence survey

c. mean birthweight of babies delivered by a particular midwife in 1994

d. range of values of hemoglobin levels of pregnant women who came for pre-natal care at
the Rural Health Unit

e. a X2 test applied to survey data to determine whether there is an association between

working status of the mother and the type of infant feeding used

DEMOGRAPHY

2.1 The following problems refer to the data presented in Table 5.10
Table 5.10 Crude Birth and Death Rates and Population
Counts of Cebu Province in 1985 and 1990.
1985 1990
1
Population Size 1,365,533 1,552,258
Crude Birth Rate2 24.9 28.1
Crude Death Rate2 6.6 5.6

Determine the following:

a. relative increase in the population of Cebu Province between 1985 and 1990;
b. absolute increase per year during the same period
c. natural increase in the Cebu population for 1985 and 1990
d. rate of natural increase for 1985 and 1990
e. Using the exponential growth assumption, what would be the annual rate of growth in the
population during the period?

2.2 Interpret the meaning of the following demographic measures:

a. Age-Dependency Ratio = 105
b. Sex Ratio = 92
c. Median Age = 16.5 yrs.

50% of the population are aged 16.5 years or less, while the other 50% of the population are aged
higher than that

HEALTH INDICATORS (pp. 122-125)

3.1 The following data are taken from the 1985 Philippine Health Statistics Report:
Number
Total males 27,437,246
Total females 27,231,086
Females aged 15-44 years 12,913,036
Total deaths 334,663
Maternal deaths 1,489
Deaths under 1 year 54,613
Deaths under 28 days 22,343
Deaths due to tuberculosis 31,650
Total livebirths 1,437,154
Tuberculosis cases 153,406

*Midyear population = 27,437,246 + 27,231,086 = 54,668,332

Uing the information given, compute and interpret the following health indicators:

a. crude birth rate

b. crude death rate
c. general fertility rate
d. infant mortality rate
e. neonatal mortality rate
f. post-natal mortality rate
g. maternal mortality rate
h. mortality rate from tuberculosis
i. morbidity rate from tuberculosis
j. case fatality rate from tuberculosis
