Homework 2:
1. Determine the bending moments due to self-weight (dead load) and due to imposed loading
(live load) of one of the beams of the floor in the sketch if the floor supports an office loading
as well as partitions with less than 1 kN/m wall length. The finish is 50 mm thick and has a
density of 2000 kg/m3.

2. Determine the pressures due to self-weight (dead load) and due to imposed loading (live
load) under the foundation of the double storey house. The trusses are at 750 mm spacing.
The trusses have a weight of 0.15 kN/m2 and the tiles together with the battens have a mass
of 60 kg/m2. The ceiling together with the brandering has a mass 14 kg/m 2. The roof has a
pitch of 25º.

The density of the concrete = 2400 kg/m3 and of the walls = 2000 kg/m3. The finish on the
concrete slab has a density of 2000 kg/m3. The floor load is for a domestic dwelling.
3. The concrete plan of the layout of the foundations and slabs of a proposed office building is
shown. The building will be 4 storeys and each column will be as shown. The slabs will get a
50 mm finish with a density of 2000 kg/m3. Determine the loads due to self-weight (dead load)
and due to imposed loading (live load) at the base on column B2.
