Unit 8: Developing a creative media production project

The Final Major Project (Year One)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

Unit 8 is the summative unit in the first year of the two-year qualification. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed in Units 1–7, to complete a creative media production project. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
begin to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)

Before I started on this course, I had just finished an A Level Course that was
completely academic based therefore I didn’t have much to go in terms of
Media terminology and the systematic differences between the two courses
although i took Media for my GCSE. Through the units I have learned a great
deal about how to appeal to different people in media sectors as well as,
market effectively a product that I have created with the full intentions of it
being presented as a marketable product (That i’m proud of). From this I have
been able to construct varies of media outlets and dive into the technicalities
of producing a high valued product, marketed towards a specific target
audience (marketing skills) and further better my educational prospects for
the future. Therefore, I feel as though the skills I have acquired throughout
the past units will help me to appeal mostly to the specific isolated target
audience that i’m hoping to reach and with this, i’ll be able to hit other target
barriers. This has influenced my ability to make constructive decisions on
projects i’m working on, be able to see when things are going in my favour vs
not. Thus, it’s with these skills I shall bring to the FMP (Final Major Project)

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

My aims for this project is to constantly be in a state of constructive
reflection and evaluation of my work. I believe step by step this will help me
to better get an understanding of my current strengths and isolate my
weaknesses. This in turn will benefit me greatly in long run as I’ll be able to
produce a project that i’m not only proud of, but others will look at and
immediately understand my concepts and artistic viewpoints that i’m trying
to emulate. The research part will be the most valuable to me, as I have
already inquired a lot of knowledge over the years on my topic, as the theme
‘love’ stands out to me the most. My chosen ‘ pathway’ is enriched with my
love for the 80’s culture and more specifically 80’s music. Through research
and personal accounts i’ll be able to justify my means of colour, movement
and time, to create a project that has many ‘modern’ sentimentalities (I’ll be
filming different landscapes, locations, settings; upon varies of times of day:
morning/afternoon/night) and having an edit/photoshopped vinyl album
covers over these videos, matching carefully with what I assume will fit the
backgrounds mood/scene of said albums. Although the videos will be filmed
in modern day time, I plan to use an array of retro software to emulate the
feel that the secondary is stepping into a time warp and viewing a piece of
80’s media. As this is something i’ve always been very passionate about, I
know that I’ll constantly work to perfect my art. The edit itself will be cut
videos with sleek transitions between them (or perhaps very fast patched- as
undecided) with an original soundtrack produced and performed by my friend
Cherish Green whom is an artist herself, that shares my shame fixation with
all things 80’s (as her song truly reflects as well). Moreover, it shall include
many motifs such as a record needle scratching and VHS tape rewinding, as
these are the most sentimental and noticeable ways to tie the music in with
the reality, and better connect with my target audience. Although I struggle
with setting deadlines and keeping within an allocated timeframe, i’m always
true to my word and able to carry forth anything that I truly put myself into
100% and I know this perfect will be nothing short or this point.
Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
I plan to record my progress by finalising every single detail of the process that I’m going to embark on,
from small steps to large steps. At the end of every decision/step i make towards going forth with my
project I will reject on whether this is the right decision to make/ ask sources close to me (family) if they
agree with me taking approach. I will write a continuous record (dairy) of my process during the project,
always reflecting, evaluating and justifying the decisions i’ve made thus far. I will be storyboarding a
rough draft throughout, to reject any changes/standpoints, to better show/visualise any
creative/production decisions that i make.

Proposed Research Sources

The influences I have for my project is just from my love of the 80’s Culture, Music, Photography, Art
and Cinematography. The resources I shall use is different sightings from almost ‘timetaps’ from around
that era and different depictions of 80’s articles.
Equipment Required
The equipment that shall be used is the Mac Computers, Iphone 13, Cannon Canon EOS 4000D DSLR
Camera, Polaroid camera, Records, VHS tapes and Cd’s. The software that I shall be using is a
combination; (Tezza, Daze Cam 1998 Cam-Vinatge Camera - for the vintage/retro style editing)
alongside Photoshop. Also IMovie, Inshot, Phonto, Vont and Premier Pro.

Resources Required
The shot locations may be depicted as the following; beach, garden, windows/and of car of journey,
holiday destinations, different weather conditions rainy/sunny/clear, different time zones day/afternoon
night/ - and many more. The sounds will include the original soundtrack sang and composed by Cherish
Green, and effects such as record needle scratching (start) and vhs tape rewinding (finish).

Skills to develop/learn
The skills I would like to better develop is how to transition videos in a way that isn’t sloppy. Also how
to perfect the short/long extension of time scales, and play around with them.

Personnel and responsibilities

I will be the sole creator of the photography, distribution of videography and other likewise props.
However, I will require the assistance of varies of people to source the Records/VHS Tapes/Cd‘s, as i’m
unable to source them all myself. Also the original soundtrack, is produced and sang by my friend
Cherish Green whom has given me her permission to use her music for my project and alter it with the
exception i mention her name somewhere during the process of finalising. My cousin Alan will assist
me in the direction, as he has many of the sources i need to photograph and Michael Bush will also help
with the sourcing of records. Apart from those mentioned above, the project will only consist of me with
the exception of possible people (pedestrians) in the background shots of my landscape/nature shots
combined.

Intended audience and context

My intended audience will be genderless as art and music itself radiates this point further. The ages will
span, as those whom appreciate art and videography will gravitate towards them ages (13-25+). As it
shall have a Retro tint and be solely based the promotion of 70’s/80’s music, the audience will also shift
between those of my similar age group that enjoy this era (18-20) and those whom have lived through
this era will feel the nostalgia.

How my project will ‘loop’

My project will hopefully loop via the images/videos depicting the astro cycle of day and night. Because
of the nature of my project, it doesn’t reflect any baseline or plots to it, as it’s just an array of videos and
image, therefore there is no distinction between start/middle/end, and this will make the loop. The
original soundtrack’s starting point will be chopped and looped so the viewer wouldn’t detect any
change in rhythm and tempo, there will be no lyrics therefore there wouldn’t be any change in pace to
the ‘loop’.

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick an area
which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – 9 weeks of practical work is not long. Just think how
fast this year has gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE
OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you undertake,
the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just describe but
analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against FOUR Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP. Remember that
the lowest awarded grade for any Learning Outcome will be the final grade
for the FMP unit.
