The supply oil flows from the implement piston pump to the main control valve at point (E). The main control valve

Cat
controls the flow of hydraulic oil to the cylinders and to the ride control system.

erp
Most of the supply oil flows to control valves for the implement circuits. Oil returns from the control valve and flows
to the tank at point (A).

pressure. The pressure reducing valve provides oil to the pilot system.

The oil that flows to pilot oil accumulator (18) charges the pilot oil accumulator. This accumulator pressure allows
the bucket to be lowered if the engine stops. Then, the oil flows through the main control valve as pilot oil. The key
start switch must be in the ON position for this function to work. Manual valve (17) can be used to lower the bucket
c.
if no power can be supplied to the implement lock out solenoid.

The load sense circuit is a constant flow circuit. Load sense pressure will never be less than pilot oil pressure. Pilot
oil enters the load sense circuit through the load sense boost check valve (32).

Load sensing relief valve (26) operates for all of the control valves in the main control valve. Load sensing relief
valve (26) limits the maximum signal pressure to the pump at point (D). Load sensing relief valve (26) drains excess
signal oil to the tank at point (B). The signal oil is sent back to the implement piston pump at point (D).

The control valves are pressure compensated and provide proportional priority if more than one circuit is active. The
signal pressure from the highest pressure function is delivered to the pump at point (D). This signal pressure is also
delivered to the compensators for the lift and tilt functions (57) and (56). The compensators adjust the pressure for
each function to balance the flows between functions. If total flow demand from all active functions exceeds

https://sis2.cat.com/#/print-preview/service/%257B%2522title%2522%253A%2522Main%2520Control%2520Valve%2520(UENR4587-02)%2522%252C%2522formattedPublicationDate%2522%253A%25222023%… 13/23

available flow from the pump, then flow to each function is reduced proportional. The amount of flow will be
proportional to the amount requested by the operator command.

Oil flow enters the control valve and flows through a parallel feeder passage to all circuits. All three circuits on the
machine can be operated independently.

Both tilt control valve and auxiliary control valve have two line relief valves. One relief valve is for each end of the
cylinders. Also, the tilt control valve and the lift control valve have an identical pilot operated check valve (27a) and
(27). The pilot operated check valves (27a) and (27) and poppet valves (30a) and (30) are for drift reduction.

Springs keep tilt valve stem (23) in the HOLD position when pilot oil is not applied to the actuated. Stem movement
is controlled by actuation of pilot controls on the console in the cab of the machine. The pilot control directs pilot oil

Tilt valve stem (23) in the hold position blocks the oil in both ends of the tilt cylinder. The stem prevents the tilt
cylinder from moving. Check valve group (27a) and poppet valve (59) further limit cylinder movement toward the
DUMP position if leakage occurs between stem (23) and valve body.

TILT RACK Operation

When the tilt control lever is moved to the TILT RACK position, pilot oil is sent to the right end of tilt valve stem (23).
Tilt valve stem (23) moves to the left. Pump oil is sent through the tilt control valve from port (73). Then around stem

port (60).

Oil flows to work port (60) to the head end of the tilt cylinder. The bucket will tilt back. Tilt valve stem (23) respond in

FLOAT Operation
When the lift control lever is moved to the FLOAT position, pilot oil is sent to the left end of lift valve stem (22). Lift

When the stem moves to the FLOAT position, work port (75) is connected to the tank at port (33) through shifted lift

of the lift arm assembly lowers the lift arm assembly to the ground. The lift arm assembly will follow the contour of

Ride control valve is an optional control addition to the main implement valve. This function provides dampening for
the forces that are produced by the bucket as the machine travels over rough terrain. Ride control valve has three
states: AUTO, OFF and SERVICE. Details about the three states of the ride control valve can be found in Systems
Operation, "Ride Control System".

When activation solenoid is not energized, the pressure at the right side of the balance spool is lowest, the spool
shifts to the right and the implement pump supplies oil flow to allow the accumulator (2) to charge. When the
accumulator (2) pressure exceeds the pump discharge pressure, check valve (59) keeps oil from draining back into
the main hydraulic system.

When ride control is activated. The balance spool will adjust the pressure in the ride control accumulator (2) to
match the lift cylinder head end pressure. When activation solenoid is turned on, main activation spool (63) will shift.
This shift creates a connection from lift cylinder head end to the ride control accumulator (2) and from lift cylinder
rod end to the tank port. Nitrogen gas in the ride control accumulator (2) acts as a shock absorber for the lift circuit.

Relief valve (7) prevents overcharging of the ride control accumulator (2) both when ride control is activated and not
activated.

Auxiliary control valve (12) is an optional control valve. The auxiliary valve controls auxiliary implements such as a
logging fork, a side dump bucket, or a multipurpose bucket. Refer to this Systems Operation , "Auxiliary Control
