Chapter I

Introduction of the Study

1.1 Background of the study

An Air Freshener is a product designed to mask or remove unpleasant room

odors (Umbach, 1991). According to the Shanghai Chuangshi Industry Group (2014),
"there is no other product comparable to air freshener for odor elimination." The air

freshener would perform powerfully and effectively in refreshing the air. In a short period

of time, the powerful air cleaner could remove the old air and replace it with fresh air. As

time went on and prices increased, researchers came up with the idea of making

inexpensive air fresheners using calamansi and tangerine peel.

Calamansi, often called Calamondin or Filipino Lime is a significant citrus hybrid

that is mostly grown in the Philippines. The Philippines exports between 160,000 and

190,000 metric tons of calamansi juice each year and a whopping 3.8 million tons of

citrus peels come to waste each year (Nosowitz, 2017). It is also estimated that citrus

peels take around 6 months to decompose which sometimes irritates the environment.

Due to this, Researchers have come up with the idea of Calamansi and Tangerine Peel

as Air Fresheners, not only it has a lot of benefits but it's also affordable and commonly

found everywhere.

As people all know, Calamansi is well renowned for its antibacterial, antiseptic,

and antimicrobial characteristics which prevent diseases by keeping your home's

surfaces hygienic and fragrant. Calamansi is relatively affordable and non-toxic,

Furthermore, It also leaves behind a refreshing, clean scent. Meanwhile, Tangerine peel

is known for its variety of use, from boosting mood and reducing stress to infusing a

room with a vibrant, fresh smell, hence, its fresh scent and essential oils make it an

excellent air freshener and natural cleaner for home use.

Calamansi and Tangerine Peel as an Alternative Air Freshener are the perfect

ingredients for making your own Non-toxic homemade Air freshener, not only it's safe

but they also have a long-lasting natural fragrance and are 100% Eco-friendly since it

doesn't contain any harmful Chemicals. It has numerous applications and advantages

that typically emit fragrance and are used in homes or commercial interiors such as

restrooms, foyers, hallways, bedrooms, cars, and other smaller indoor areas as well as

large areas. Because of its citrusy smell and essential oils, calamansi and Tangerine

peel can make an excellent air freshener.

the effectiveness of using Calamansi and Tangerine peel as an Air Freshener in the

bedroom considering it was not processed by chemicals and was manually created. As

to determine the best result of the said research the researcher decided to conduct the

testing of the item in different housing with different ambiances and environments.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of an orange peel and calamansi-based air

freshener. Specifically, It aims to provide answers to the following questions:

1. How long does the fragrance of the Calamansi and Tangerine Peel-Based Air

Freshener last?

2. What are the possible benefits of Calamansi and Tangerine Peel as an Air

Freshener?

3. What makes Calamansi and Orange Peel the perfect ingredients for making your own

Non-Toxic Air Freshener?

1.4 Significance of the study

This study may benefit the following people

Family. Families are the most beneficiary of this study since the testing can be

done also to direct family that can be use daily needs.

School. Can also used by school to be an alternative air refreshener to each

classroom and bathrooms that can lead school to save funds in buying another product

similar to our study.

Vendors. This study can help vendors in selling their product and achieve high

production since the main fundamental of the study are Calamansi and Tangerine Peel.
 Learners. Many students can learned about the effectiveness of this research

and determined the importance of using the following product as alternative Air

Refreshener.

Future Researcher. This study was beneficial to the future researchers because

it will become their guide if their planning to conduct a study that connected of this

study. As it provided further information.

1.5 Definition of terms

Calamansi - refers to small citrus fruit that is native to the Philippines.

Orange Peel - refers to the rind of an orange separated from the pulp.

Air Freshener - refers to a perfume or substance that hides an offensive odor

produce a comfortable, clean environment.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation

This Study, conducted from March 2023 until the end of the School Year, this

study was focused only on determining the effectiveness of Calamansi and Tangerine

Peel as Air Freshener. Moreover, it focuses on determining if the Calamansi and

Tangerine Peel air freshener is a suitable substitute for regular air fresheners.

The four (4) researchers from STEM 11-Patriotism of Asian Colleges of Technology,

Bulacao Campus Cebu in Senior High School Building Forth Floor Particularly in Room

405 taken themselves as respondents and asked about the effectiveness and the

potentiality of Calamansi and Tangerine Peel as Air fresheners. The responders were

gathered at Asian Colleges of Technology in Talisay City Cebu, Senior High School

Building, 4th Floor Room 405, to collect the necessary information and data.
 Chapter II

Foreign studies

Many studies had revealed that synthetic air freshener contains hazardous

chemicals such as phthalates and formaldehyde which may increase the risk of getting

health problems. What ingredients can people use to make Air fresheners that are non-

toxic and Risk-Free?

According to Chanthapon et. al. 2008, "Citrus essential oil that had been used

widely in fragrance and aromatherapy industry with a refreshing smell has a potential to

be used in making natural aromatic gel which does not contain a hazardous chemical

that is harmful to our health."

On the other hand, According to Cahyati et al., 2016, Orange peel oil may also

be used as an air freshener, a perfume material, and a food flavoring agent. Besides,

orange peel oil is also beneficial for health purposes, including aromatherapy. The scent

of orange peel oil may stabilize the nervous system, create happiness and peace as

well as increase the appetite, and cure diseases.

Moreover, Wikandari (2015) stated that, "by using the orange peel waste in

manufacturing products, Orange Peels secrete citric acid can be used in making

cleaners and disinfectants. It also produces a pleasant smell which you can harness to

make a perfume or an air freshener. By using the orange peels, unnecessary wastage

of oranges will be avoided and global pollution levels can be reduced thereby helping

the planet."

According to an article entitled 11 Simple Deodorizer Ideas to Make Your Home

Smell Fresh (2017), "Lemons can be utilized all over your home to help freshen up it. If

the smell of your trash transfer is getting a bit overpowering put lemon strips down it to

dispose of the smell". On the off chance that you need your entire kitchen to have a

lemon aroma and not simply the sink, cut a lemon down the middle and spot it (cut side

up) in a bowl of water and let them sit.

The Researchers thought of a way in which they can produce a soothing and

great scent without harming the surroundings and community, they come up with

Calamansi Citrofortunella Microcrapa. According to Julienne Mae Potonia, "Calamansi

Citrofortunella Microcrapa Fruit Extract as a Perfume will lessen the expenses of the

people that will buy perfumes. Calamansi (Citrofortunella macrocarpa) has been proven

to help alleviate depression and anxiety. It is also among the few aromatics that not just

mask the bad smell but completely neutralize them, making the essential oil a great

additive to cleansing products. Inventing a perfume that has a citrus scent, is cheap,

doesn't have a bad effect on our environment and our health, and is made from

something that is abundant in our country is very helpful."

According to article entitled Production and Marketing of Gel Air Freshener

with Mosquito repellant from used ground Coffee and Orange peel (2016). Their

researcher uses coffee and orange peel for repellant from mosquitos. Aside from

repellant they used these also for freshener. In the other hand, the product was

developed to eliminate odor and to serve as a decorative item. The study that the

researchers made were using lemon and orange peel that would turns out as freshener.

In able to relate this to the study/topic we made the comparison of their study and the

study that the researchers made is that they both uses orange peel in able to make

freshener.

The article entitled Production of Essential Oil (2020) by Erich Schmidt.

Their study stated that Essential oils are good natural sources of substances with

commercial potential as starting materials for chemical synthesis. Not really that similar

to the study the researcher made yet these are the benefits in able to come up with

freshener. From a health perspective, air fresheners have been associated with adverse

effects, such as migraine headaches, asthma attacks, mucosal symptoms, infant illness,

and breathing difficulties. And that made the researchers study more like it.
 Base on the article entitled, The effectiveness of Ponkan (Citrus Reticulate)

Peel AS AIR FRESHENER by Jerilou D. DeVera. It stated there that air fresheners are

pervasive within indoor built environments, such as workplaces, schools, housing,

transportation, hotels, hospitals, care facilities, and a range of private and public

buildings. As the researcher an air fresheners however, can produce and emit a variety

of potentially dangerous air pollutants that can deteriorate air quality, regardless of their

intended use. Hazardous air pollutants can even be released by purportedly green and

organic air fresheners. By using lemon and orange peel this shows and might be more

potential on fabricating the freshener.

The study entitled an Amazing benefits of orange peels that go beyond

culinary and beauty purposes (2019) by Deepa Gupta. According to her discovery the

citrus content d-limonene is a volatile oil that boasts the credit of keeping your homes

shiny clean and scented. Thus, if you do not want to use harsh chemicals while

performing household tasks, orange peel is one of the best natural ways to get them

done with all ease and perfection. Since we are discussing about freshener, she also

stated that Orange peels are an effective natural air freshener. Drop those orange peels

in boiling water and simmer them for a few minutes to naturally fill your home with the

amazing aroma of oranges. By that, this can relate to the study that the researchers

made. For their study they use the peel for culinary and beauty purposes however we

can use their products for freshener and that made the researchers study relatable and

unique.

Chapter III

Research Design
 This study employed the experimental method of research, which examined

how well calamansi and Tangerine peel worked as air fresheners. This data will be

carried out by some test that was made by the Researchers.

Research Locale

This Study will be conducted in the Asian College of Technology Bulacao

Campus, Cebu in Senior High School Building Forth Floor Particularly in Room 405.

Research Participants

The respondents in this study have a total of four (4) Respondents from the

researcher of this study students of STEM 11-Patriotism.

Material Used

The researchers gathered the items needed such as 1/8 baking soda, ½ cup of

calamansi juice, freshly squeezed, 2-3 drops tangerine essential oil and 2 cups hot

water, which will be serve as tools to answer the questions to identify and evaluate the

information gathered. In addition, the researchers made use of a checklist to gathered

more data that can help providing the accurate answers for the questionnaires.

Procedure

As the materials are ready the researchers carefully followed the following

steps or procedure mentioned to do the experiment correctly. The following procedures

are measure the baking soda into a clean bowl, pour in the hot water, and stir to

dissolve. Add the calamansi juice and tangerine essential oil. Stir together thoroughly.

Allowed the mixture to cool to room temperature. Pour the air refreshener mixture into a

clean spray bottle. Shake well whenever you use it. Spritz where you need it. Finally,

after doing all the procedures step by step the researchers collected all the data or

information needed for the experiment. With the help of questionnaire the information

gathered will be now analyzed and evaluated.
