- If you were the Training Coordinator, how would you design the workshop to meet the goals of the
agency?

Some of the tips we can use to organize our workshop are:

Start with an overview

Determine the goal

Decide who needs to come

List the tangible outcomes

Decide when and where it will be

Work backwards to make a plan

Detail the activities in each section

Be mindful about brainstorming

Sketch out more ideas

Share ideas

Delegate when needed

Make slides

Keep track of time

In the case of these new people who must be trained to work in the field of public health and because
many of them are not familiar with the reality of public health in the US in the last 100 years.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published the list of the 10 most important health
advances in the country and that allowed it to increase the average life of its citizens in almost 30 years.

One of the most important points is that people in training understand Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) this law instrument has been designed to take care of the patient's
privacy so that their information cannot be used by people outside the staff of health and the patient
who are the only ones authorized to know the patient's medical information.

Once this issue has been addressed, I would spend the next two weeks inviting people who can explain
how the health improvements were achieved in the past 100 years according to the list published by
CDC in 1999.

The most important in my opinion are the eradication of smallpox, elimination of polio and control of
measles, rubella, tetanus, diphteria and other infectious disease.

In recent years deaths have decreased due to traffic accidents. The improvement in road safety that was
recorded in recent years. Improvement in freeways and the obligation to use seat belt or helmett in
motorcyclists or those who use bicycles. Also the laws that punish drivers who drive while intoxicated
and those who do not comply with traffic laws.
Another of the improvements in health in the last 100 years is the decrease in deaths from
cardiovascular diseases. These deaths have decreased since 1972 by 51%.

The other seven improvements that have been recognized are:

1.-Work-related health problems.

2.- Control of drinking water quality and air quality.

3.- Better control of the foods that are consumed in the country.

4.- Better health conditions for parturients and their babies.

5.-Access to planning services and contraceptive delivery services.

6.- The fight against tobacco that is listed as a health hazard.

7.- Control of infectious diseases.

2.- How will understanding the history help new professionals develop a base competence in public
health and help their career development?

Because several people who participated in the training come from other jobs we must instill in them
the history of advances in public health in our country. I think this will help them to discover many
problems that still exist in the public health of the USA. the appearance of new deadly virus strains such
as the corona virus in Wuhan province in China but because a person who takes a plane in the contagion
zone and can reach our country in less than 12 hours which creates a potential danger to We must face.
The new epidemics of chronic diseases such as Diabetes and Obesity need programs such as YMCA to
combat them. If these people are going to work in the field of public health they should be involved in
understanding the problems to which they will be exposed.

3.- What other accomplishments coud have been selected for the list?

Consider international as well as national initiatives.

I believe that one of the most important for our country is the growth of hospice and palliative care
services.

With more than 4400 hospices in the US and 77 in the San Diego area.

Modern hospice that was implemented by Cecily Saunders in London in 1950 came to the US in 1971.

In 2007, more than 1.4 million received hospice services. Today it is estimated that one third of patients
who are in a process of (EOL) End of Life receive hospice services. Unfortunately, the racial differences of
the patients receiving these services are very marked. It is estimated that only 7 to 9% of black or
Hispanic patients request services compared to 80% of white patients.

Another of the most important advances has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer
patients. It already exists for some types of cancer such as Leukemia, which some statistics show can be
cured up to 90%. Many advances in this field are expected with advances in genetics and new drugs that
help improve immunity to attack cancer cells.
