DIFFUSION Laboratory Report

Objectives

1. To determine the movement of a particles from of an area of high concentration

to an area of low concentration.
2. To determine the factors which affect the rate of diffusion.

Procedure
Using the virtual laboratory setting about Diffusion, the students will be able
determine the movement of a substance from an area of a high concentration to an area
of low concentration, how the two gases mix and which can affect the rate of diffusion.
To observe how the particles affect the rate of diffusion, change the red particles to 120
and the blue particles to 50. And to determine the mass, change the red and blue
particles to 50, and the mass of the blue particles shall be 32 amu and 10 amu for the
red particles. Observe and record the movement of the particles every 15, 20, and 25
seconds. Per second, I release the divider and start the stop watch at the same time. To
observe how the radius of the particles affects the rate of diffusion, change the radius of
the red particles to 170 pm and the blue particles to 100 pm. Release the divider and
start the stop watch at the same time. Observe and record the movement of the
particles every 5 seconds from the first 15 seconds until they reach the 25th second. To
determine how the initial temperature affects the rate of diffusion, the temperature of the
red particles should be set at 50 K and 350 K for the blue particles. Release the divider
and start the stop watch at the same time. Observe and record the movement of the
particles based on the duration of time presented in the table below.

Discussion
Change the red and blue particles to 120 and 50, respectively, to see how they
affect the rate of diffusion. Change the red and blue particles to 50, and the blue
particles mass should be 32 amu, while the red particles' mass should be 10 amu.
Every 15, 20, and 25 seconds, watch and record the movement of the particles. At the
same moment as I release the divider, I start the stop watch.
