CLIMATE CHANGE
EVIDENCES OF CLIMATE CHANGE

● Scientists are given the bigger picture’ on information about Earth with the use
of satellites that orbit the Earth as well as other technological advances. With the
data they have collected over the past few years, it shows the negative change of
climate over time.

1. Rise in Global Temperature

- Since the late 19th century, the average surface temperature on Earth
has risen to 2.05 degrees Fahrenheit/1.14 degrees Celsius
- The increase in global temperature has increased significantly in the past
40 years.
- The six warmest years have occurred since 2014
- The warmest year was in 2016, with eight months of that year (January
to September, except June) being the warmest months recorded
2. Warming of Ocean Temperature
- The ocean being the number one absorber of the increased global
temperature, as the Earth stores 90 percent of its extra energy in the ocean.
- The top 100 meters (around 328 feet) gets warmer by 0.6 degrees
Fahrenheit/0.33 degrees Celsius since 1969
3. Rise in Sea Levels
- In the last century, global sea level has increased around 8 inches/20
centimeters
- The rate has doubled in the last two decades alone, and is increasing still
each year
CAUSES
● The global warming trend seen since the mid-20th century has been
attributed to the “greenhouse effect”brought by humans. Temperature in the
Earth’s atmosphere has increased with theheat being trapped in the atmosphere
due to these different greenhouse gases
- Water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs)
● The probability that globalwarming in the current situation is influenced by
man-made causes is greater than 95 percent.
- Different industrial activities in this generation depend onthe use of
greenhouse gases which have raised carbon dioxide levels from 280parts per
million to 414 parts per million in the last 150 years.
- Human-produced greenhouse gases have increased the Earth’s
temperatures in the past 50 years
● The increase in globaltemperature cannot entirely come from the Sun
because the energy from the Sun has either been constant or had a slight
increase since 1750
EFFECTS
- Global warming
The global annual temperature has increased at anaverage rate of 0.07°C per
decade since 1880 and more than double that rate (+0.18°C) since 1981.
- Rise of Sea Levels
Global sea level has risen by approximately 8 inches
since 1880, and is expected to rise by another 1 to 8 feet by 2100.
- Typhoons will become stronger and more frequent.
As seas get warmer, more water vapor and heat energy is added into
the atmosphere which serve as fuels to typhoons, and in the right conditions, can
make dangerous storms even more powerful.
- Air pollution
The extraction and burning of fossil fuels is a major sourceof air pollutants.
- Easier Spread of Diseases
Warmer weathers create ideal conditions for waterborne pathogens
like bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.
SOLUTIONS
- Speak up & Educate
By voicing out these concerns, may it be through social media or in person,
we are not only raising awareness about this issue but proving that these
problems matter and should not be ignored.
- Reduce plastic waste
As our climate changes, the planet gets hotter, plastic
releases powerful greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, due to the sunlight and
heat.
- Buy less stuff & Recycle more
Re-using materials usually uses less energy, and therefore creates less pollution,
as compared to extracting raw materials.
- Plant more trees
Trees help absorb CO2 out of the air and thus, planting more of them
will help stabilize the climate.
