Teratomas are tumors that are composed of tissues that are typically derived from more than one

germ layer. They can be classified based on their location, histological features, and degree of

malignancy. Here are the main types of teratomas:

1. Mature teratoma: These are benign tumors that contain well-differentiated tissues from

all three germ layers (endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm). They can occur in various

parts of the body, but most commonly in the ovary, testis, and sacrococcygeal region.

2. Immature teratoma: These are malignant tumors that contain tissues that are poorly

differentiated or undifferentiated. They can occur in various parts of the body, but most

commonly in the ovaries and testes.

3. Teratoma with malignant transformation: These are tumors that arise from mature

teratomas and contain areas of malignant transformation. They are usually found in the

ovary, testis, and mediastinum.

4. Teratoma with somatic-type malignancy: These are tumors that contain both mature and

malignant tissues, but the malignant component is derived from a somatic tissue, not a

germ cell. They are usually found in the ovary.

7
5. Monodermal or highly specialized teratoma: These are tumors that contain tissues from a

single germ layer, such as mature thyroid tissue, mature neuroglial tissue, or mature

pancreatic tissue.

The classification of teratomas is important because it helps in determining the appropriate

treatment and predicting the prognosis
