Final QP

This document contains instructions and questions for an online exam on Electric Drives being conducted by Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. [1] It instructs students to answer all questions in a single answer script and upload their responses as a single PDF within 20 minutes of completing the exam. [2] The exam contains two parts - Part A consists of two questions related to transfer functions of DC motors and advantages of PWM rectifiers. [3] Part B consists of three questions related to equivalent load parameters of a motor system, techniques to reduce motor losses during transients, and selection of motor rating for periodically varying loads.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, SHIBPUR

B.Tech (EE) 6th Semester Final Examination, May 2021

ELECTRIC DRIVES (EE-601)

Time : hours Full Marks : 70

(i) This exam is being conducted ONLINE due to Covid-19 pandemic

(ii) Use a single answer-script to answer both parts. All parts of a single question must be
answered together, not haphazardly.
(iii) Answer all questions.
(iv) After 1.5 hours, scan all the pages in a single PDF file and upload the file in the required
Google Classroom within the next 20 minutes.

Part- A

1. a) A 240V, 0.75kW, 500 r.p.m. separately excited d.c. motor has the armature resistance of 7.6 Ω and
the armature inductance of 0.06 H. The back emf constant is 0.45 V/rpm. The moment of inertia of
the motor is 0.14 kg-m2. Assume that the load inertia is equal to the motor inertia. Find the transfer
function indicating the natural frequency of oscillation and damping ratio. Also find the speed
response to a constant torque corresponding to a step change of 50 V in input voltage using
approximate transformation.

b) What are the advantages of PWM type rectifiers over conventional phase-controlled rectifiers?
[11+6=17]

2. a) What do you understand by slip compensation of a drive system without tachogenerator?

b) Draw the block schematic of the field-oriented controlled induction motor drive system.
c) Name the various motors used in textile industries. Discuss in brief about their torque
requirements. [5+6+7=18]

Part- B

3. Derive the expressions for equivalent load torque and inertia referred to motor shaft of the system
shown below. Assume any other parameters, if required. [15]

4. Explain different techniques by which the electrical energy loss in motor during transient process can
be reduced. [10]

5. Prepare a brief write up on selection of motor rating driving a periodically varying load.
