Obtain Measurements
Author: CATHY P. BIORE
This learning module will give you the basic knowledge in taking body measurements
that will help you in building the competencies you need to develop in the K to 12 Technology
and Livelihood Education Program. The lessons included in this module are presented
developmentally so that after finishing the first lesson, you are ready to apply your learning to
the succeeding lessons and accumulate more knowledge and skills until you complete all the
four most essential learning competencies

7
For this week, this module provides the learners with the basic concepts and principles in
taking body measurements. It also includes the system of measurements which helps them to
make measuring easy to understand. Body measurement plays a vital role in good fitting of
clothes. This will make them realize the importance of accurate measurements in drafting and
constructing garments.

LESSON

Measurements taken accurately are key elements in creating a garment that fits well and
comfortable. Take your body measurements carefully and accurately to be able to make your
pattern. Be honest to yourself and your tape measure. The following are the body
measurements usually used in dressmaking and how they are being measured.
1. Neck (N) – measure 2. Shoulder
around the neck according Width (SW) –
to desired depth measure from the tip
of the shoulder to
the other
tip crossing at
the back of the base of
the neck

3. Bust (B) 4. Waist (W) – measure

– measure around the narrowest part
around the of the waist
fullest part of the
bust and across the
widest part of the
back

5. Hip (H) – measure 6. Armhole (AH) –

from the back waist until measure around the
the fullest part of the arm over the shoulder
hips to the armpit, tape meet
on the
shoulder bone

7. Sleeve Length (SL) – 8.Arm Circumference

measure from shoulder tip (AC) - measure
point to the desired sleeve around the biggest
length part of the arm where
the sleeve ends

9. Shirt Length (SH) – 10. Front Length (FL) –

measure from the nape (also called front figure)
measure from shoulder
bone down to the desired (base of neck) over the
length of the shirt. bust to the waist

11. Back Length (BL) - (also
called back figure) measure
from shoulder (base of neck)
down to waist at the back

Tips in Taking Body Measurements

✽ Use a tape measure that does not stretch.

✽ Wear an undergarment or a body suit. Do no wear thick clothes when taking body
measurements.
✽ Be sure to record all the measurements accurately.
✽ It is easier and more accurate to have someone help you take these
measurements.

Metric Conversion Chart

Simple calculation is an easy mathematical application used to determine the accurate

measurement of body parts, length and width of materials and cost needed to create apparel.
This is the process in which the four fundamental of operations (MDAS) is involved.

Length and Width of Materials

In measuring the length and width of materials needed such as fabrics, we also need the use of
the Metric measurement system.

Metric Conversion Chart for Fabric and Sewing

1/4 Inch = 0.25 Centimeters

7 Inches = 17.78 Centimeters
1/2 Inch = 1.27 Centimeters
7.5 Inches = 19.05 Centimeters
5/8 Inch = 1.59 Centimeters
8 Inches = 20.32 Centimeters
3/4 Inch = 1.905 Centimeters
8.5 Inches = 21.59 Centimeters
1 Inch = 2.54 Centimeters
9 Inches = 22.86 Centimeters
1.5 Inches = 3.81 Centimeters
9.5 Inches = 24.13 Centimeters

2 Inches = 5.08 Centimeters
10 Inches = 25.4 Centimeters
2.5 Inches = 6.35 Centimeters
10.5 Inches = 26.67 Centimeters
3 Inches = 7.62 Centimeters
11 Inches = 27.94 Centimeters
3.5 Inches = 8.89 Centimeters
12 Inches = 30.48 Centimeters
4 Inches = 10.16 Centimeters
1 Yard = 0.9144 Meters
4.5 Inches = 11.43 Centimeters
2 Yards = 1.8288 Meters
5 Inches = 12.7 Centimeters
3 Yards = 2.7432 Meters
5.5 Inches = 13.97 Centimeters
4 Yards = 3.6576 Meters
6 Inches = 15.24 Centimeters
5 Yards = 4.572 Meters
6.5 Inches = 16.51 Centimeters

Example:
1 . How many inches are there in a 100 2. How many centimeters are there in a 60
centimeters width of fabric? (cm -> in) inches length of fabric? (in -> cm) Answer:

Answer: b. Given: 1 inch = 2.54 cm

Length of fabric = 60 inches
a. Given: 1 inch = 2.54 cm
Equivalent of a cm to an inch = 2.54 cm
Width of fabric = 100 cm
Calculation: 60 inches X 2.54 cm = 152.4 cm
Equivalent of an inch to cm = 2.54

Calculation: 100 cm = 39.37 inches

2.54 cm
