    SECTION A – DRAMA
    The Merchant of Venice: Shakespeare

    QUESTION 1
    Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow:

    Morocco: The first, of gold, who this inscription bears:


    “Who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire”.
    The second, silver, which this promise carries:
    “Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves”.
    This third, dull lead, with warning all as blunt:
    “Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath”.
    How shall I know if I do choose the right?

    i) Where is the Prince of Morocco present? Why has he come there? [3]
    ii) Who is Morocco talking to? What does the listener reply to the question [3]
    asked in the last line of the extract?
    iii) What were the conditions pertaining to the lottery? [3]

    Read the extract given below and answer the following questions:

    Shylock: Out upon her! Thou torturest me, Tubal: it was


    my turquoise; I had it of Leah when I was a
    bachelor: I would not have given it for a wilderness
    of monkeys.
    Tubal: But Antonio is certainly undone.
    i) Who is referred to as ‘her’ in the extract? What had she done with the [3]
    turquoise? How did Shylock react after knowing that?
