1. Objective
This document contains list of questions and answers that support service organization in
promoting and installing Swicom with IR Temperature Sensor solution.

2. Infrared Temperature Solution

2.1. What does the IR sensor measure?

The IR sensors are installed pointing to the busbar which is near the electrical joint at the
busbar and cable compartment. The sensors measure the temperature difference between
the busbar and the ambient temperature inside of the switchgear assembly.

2.2. Is maintenance required on the IR sensor?

The IR sensors has a certified lifetime calibration by the manufacturer. In addition, no routine
check or inspection is required. This means once the IR sensor is installed and commissioned,
there is no need for the end user to spend any cost on maintenance and calibration.

2.3. Are the IR sensors reliable (MTBF)?

IR sensors have a certified Mean Time to Failure of 2,634 years calculated based on actual fail-
ures on supplied units between 2007 to 2014.

2.4. Can the IR sensors be installed on both AIS and GIS

switchgear?
The IR sensor can be installed on AIS in the bus bar, circuit breaker and the cable compart-
ment. GIS cable terminations can be monitored by means of dedicated sensors which are fas-
tened with cable ties.

2.5. How to decide which temperature sensor to offer and

implement between IR and SAW sensors solution?
a) AIS
i. Wireless SAW sensor is recommended for AIS switchgear retrofit due to flexibility of
the solution. It can also be applied in new AIS switchgear
ii. Infrared sensor application is mainly recommended for new AIS SWGs whenever the
customer is asking for non-contact sensors
b) GIS
i. Wireless SAW sensor application can be applied on cable termination of GIS SWGs
ii. For solution which involve IR sensor solution, a specific sensor for cable termination
(it is contact sensor) is available.

2.6. Which components are required to install the IR

temperature monitoring solution?
There are three main components required:

1. The IR sensors

2. The Data card which acts as an interface between the IR sensors and Swicom. One data
card supports up to 8 sensors

3. Swicom. The communication protocol between Swicom and Data card is via Modbus RTU.
Up to 24 data cards can be connected to a single Swicom unit

2.7. What are the pre-requisites prior to installing the IR

sensors?
· For AIS, an access from front and rear side of the panels is generally required.

· The installation of temperature sensors in cable compartment of the panels equipped

with voltage transformers on withdrawable truck is not possible in some cases in posi-
tion indicated in this manual. The sensor support and sensor positioning are a design to
order in this case.

· For ABB UniGear ZS1 switchgear panel rated at 31.5kA manufactured before year 2008,
the busbar compartment does not include removable busbar cover. In this case, the sen-
sor support and sensor positioning are a design to order.

· In case of uninsulated tee-offs in busbar section and cable connection bars, it is essential
to apply mask tape at specific area to ensure proper infrared sensor reading. This treat-
ment is to increase emissivity and therefore reduce the impact of any reflected IR.

2.8. What information can be viewed on Swicom?

It is possible to view the KPI based on the temperature sensors that are installed.

In addition, measurement of the temperatures is also visible in the measurement page.
