BERNINA UNVEILS QUILT FOR A QUEEN

Quilt For a Queen, a special design created by popular sewing
machine manufacturer Bernina, has now been unveiled. It was
created to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday, using stitched and
embroidered blocks contributed by enthusiasts around the UK
– and as far afield as Canada and Australia. The finished quilt
was unveiled at The Festival of Quilts and will be shown on
other Bernina exhibition stands during 2016, before being
presented to Buckingham Palace as a gift. To see a virtual

STYLES!

Sewing with sheers

Don’t let sheer fabric daunt you
– temporarily stiffen the fabric
with spray starch, which will help
the material stay rigid during the
cutting out and sewing stages. Opt
for sharp silk or glass-headed pins,
as these won’t snag the material.
This type of fabric can also mark
easily, so pin in the seam allowance
to avoid causing any damage.

Love layers
Layering sheer fabrics over a skirt pattern is a trend Style D
that dates back to the late 50s. A sheer layer looks Elasticated waist
amazing over the top of a bold floral design, but
also works well in monochromatic colours too. For
an extra-quick make, use a skirt pattern that doesn’t
have pockets, zips or any other design additions.

How I made it
Dressmaker Vie
Millard’s top tips for
working with New Look 6327
l Fabrics with a metallic content
need fine machine needles and a
longer than average stitch. Some
need no neatening or hemming, as
they do not fray. A rotary cutter and
cutting mat are useful for achieving
a really clean edge – just make sure
you always keep your tools sharp.
l Create a permanent gathering
guide to keep in the pattern
envelope with all markings carefully
transferred from the paper pattern.
The top of the skirt is gathered to
fit and the elastic is then stretched
to fit the gathers.
l When machine stitching elastic,
stretch both behind and in front
of the needle – this prevents
needle breakages.

The best fit

Ultimately, fit is key to a great dress. Measure yourself and
choose your pattern size. Cutting out and pressing the pieces,

your fitting alterations on this first.

BUBBLE DRESS
This stylish dress is so versatile – it would be great for a party, or to wear casually
during the day. The bubble effect is created by three rows of shirring at the top of the dress,
directly under the elastic casing, and another four or five rows under the bust, with the
section in between left to ‘bubble’ out. It also has the option to add a double-layer
hem band in a coordinating knit.

2 Open out the large piece of fabric, with
right side facing up. Fold the two 34cm
straight edges on the front to the long
straight edge at the back, matching the
outside corners together, then the remainder
of the 34cm sections. Pin and stitch in place.
Clip the seam allowance as far as the stitching
line at the inside ends of the seams. Neaten
the seams and press towards the back of
the kimono.

3 Pin then stitch the short ends of the two

front and neck band strips together. Open
out the seam allowances, then fold and press
the circle which has been created, in half
lengthways, matching the long edges of both
sides of the strips.

4 Find the centre back neck and centre back

at the base of the kimono and mark with a
pin. Match one of the band seams to the
centre back neck and the other to the centre
back base. Pin the remainder of the band
around the opening, being careful not to pull
either the band or the kimono so that the
finished opening doesn’t become distorted.
When you are happy with the positioning,
stitch in place and neaten the seam allowance,
pressing it inside the kimono so that the band
turns out from the garment.

5 Sew the two ends of one of the arm bands

together to form a circle. Open out the
seam allowance then fold the band in half
lengthways, matching the edges together. Line
up the seam of the arm band to the end of the
seam on the kimono. Pin the band to the
armhole of the kimono, and stitch in place.
Neaten the seam allowance and press it inside
the armhole. Repeat the process with the
remaining armhole and arm band to finish.

I
’ve bought some sequin fabric
to make a party dress, but I’m

Nancy Wheeler

Sian says
Sequin fabrics are perfect for the party
season, but can be a nightmare to sew if
you’re not prepared for the adjustments you
need to make.
First, check whether your fabric has a nap (a
direction in which the sequins are running). If
Sian so, make sure you follow this when laying and

this help to protect your sewing machine from

any loose sequins as you can always hand sew

these to fill any gaps later on.

Avoid using an overlocker

when sewing sequinned

fabrics, as this can cause
major damage
You will need extra sharp needles when you
begin sewing, so make sure you have a good
supply in case of emergencies! I would suggest
using an extra-tough set like leather needles as
they’re designed to cope with trickier fabrics.
Avoid using an overlocker when sewing with
sequinned fabrics as this can cause major
damage to the needle and knife on the cutting
plate. Simply use a zig zag stitch on your
machine to achieve the same finish.

Your social calender is bound to be jam-packed
this festive season, and you'll no doubt be
thinking of the many outfits you need to plan. Nobody
wants to face the embarrassment of turning up to a
special occasion wearing the same dress as someone else
– big no-no. That's why we've sought advice from fashion
expert Caroline Williams! She shows us just how easy
it is to take this season's key looks and recreate the style
with some fabric, a similar pattern and a few simple
stitches – easy as one, two, three.

LUXURIOUS LACE
You can never go wrong with a perfectly fitted lace dress.
There's a reason why style icon Kate Middleton often wears
them! Feminine and chic, lace is an extremely flattering choice
for most women. A wider spread of lace works much like
larger prints and generally looks good across all sizes, while a
tightly scoped lace fabric is well-suited to petite women, as it's
much finer in detail. Overlay the lace over a different coloured
lining for extra wow factor, or add your own appliqué and
beading to various parts of the garment. Amber Dress, £160,

THE LBD
The little black dress is always a classic for the party season and a
garment that we can never have too many of! Even the simplest
of patterns can deliver the utmost glamour. This cap sleeve style
is perfect for women who don't like their arms on show as the
sleeve shoots out from the shoulder, naturally slimming the arm.
Why not add pockets to your dress to create a chic casual look,
perfect for Christmas day? Pairing with colourful tights in a
punchy bright would really make this outfit pop!

The midi skirt is a key look for the Christmas party season and
one that is truly versatile. It's not only easy to create, but also to

a tapered jacket, sheer blouse or a fur jacket – the options are
endless! The cinched in waistline is also perfect for creating that
perfect hourglass figure. Consider a bold print or even lace,

An elegant jumpsuit is a must in any woman's wardrobe. The style
made a huge comeback with designers a few years ago, and is a
great look for all ages and figures that you can recreate easily at

women with a larger bust. Stitch yours in a luxe fabric – perfect

Give this easy accessory a whirl!
If you usually stitch with the same fabric types, Corinne Bradd’s project
will show you that leatherette is a surprisingly easy material to work
with. Just be mindful that every stitch will leave a permanent hole – so
use a fabric glue where you’d otherwise use pins, and be sure of the fit
before you stitch. The chic bag is big enough to hold all of your essentials!
stitch a clutch bag
1 Cut two 26cm square pieces of
canvas, two 26cm x 36cm pieces of
cotton and two 11cm x 26cm pieces of
leatherette. Fuse interfacing to the
wrong side of each canvas piece, then
stitch a piece of leatherette to the
bottom of each canvas square, right
sides together. Unfold, press the seam
to the canvas side and topstitch 3mm
from the join to keep the pieces flat. Cut
two 5cm squares of leatherette. Fold in
5mm on opposite edges, gluing lightly
to hold the folds in place, then fold the
pieces in half over the ends of your zip
and topstitch.

2 Place one canvas and leatherette

piece face up on a flat surface, turn
the zip face down and line up one edge
with the top edge of the fabric. Place a
cotton piece face down over this and
use a zipper foot to stitch the layers
together, close to the teeth of the zip.
Unfold the layers and refold so the
zip stands proud, then topstitch 3mm
from the seam. Repeat for the other
side of the zip with the remaining
cotton, canvas and leatherette pieces.

3 For the fastener, cut two 2cm x 11cm

Make me blush pink!

Gone are the days where pink is dismissed as a credible colour, previously thought to be prissy and overly girlie.
The colour has recently seemed to have grown-up and almost out of nowhere, we’re seeing sophisticated shades
pop up such as rose golds and blush pinks – which are perfect for a stylish Christmas colourway. It’s easy to
hint at this charming trend in your home, pared down with earthy or metallic accessories.

To make the pocket, trim two 12cm x 19cm
pieces of fabric, plus a 5cm x 19cm strip for
the binding. Sew the two rectangles along
the long edge, right sides together, then
open out the seam and press.

2 Iron the long edges of the binding

into the centre, then press in half
again to create a thin strip. Pin over the

in place. Position the pocket on one side
of the outer bag piece as shown on the

pocket onto the bag. Pin the rest of the
pocket in place to secure.

3 Fit a zip along the top edge of the

bag where indicated on the template.
Pin the body pieces, right sides
together, and sew the base. With the
zip closed and right sides together, pin
the zip to the seam at the bottom,
matching points A and B up.

4 Open the zip slightly and pull the

cutaway sections out to create the

shown on the template (C, D, E, F). Do
the same for all four sides. Repeat steps
3 and 4 for the lining pieces, omitting
the zip – it will just have an open edge.
This can be pinned together to hold in
