Diet & Nutrition
Food and beverages provide the energy and nutrients you need to improve health, manage disease,
and reduce the risk of disease. Complete nutrition requires ingestion and absorption of vitamins,
minerals, essential amino acids from protein and essential fatty acids from fat-containing food, also
food energy in the form of carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Dietary habits and choices play a
significant role in the quality of life, health and longevity.
The body starts to respond to healthy dietary changes as soon as they are made. This can be
advantageous, because a diet can then eventually reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart
disease, as well as improve a person’s overall sense of well-being.
Control of blood glucose level
Eating carbohydrates increases the blood sugar level, but the extent of this rise
depends on a food’s glycemic index. The glycemic index is a ranking system, based on
a score of 1 to 100, that determines the effect of a food on blood sugar levels.
Foods with a high glycemic index are quickly broken down, leading to sharp increases
in blood sugar, followed by sharp drops. Sharp fluctuations in the blood sugar level
can increase the risk of diabetes, obesity and heart disease. It follows that avoiding
such foods with a high glycemic index such as soft drinks, candy and white bread can
lower these risks.
Ensuring a steady blood sugar level by opting for foods with a low glycemic index
sustains the body’s energy levels. The sharp spike in blood sugar and sharp drop
that follows is avoided and energy levels are sustained. A steady level of blood
glucose can also prove beneficial, since a lowered blood sugar, which is common
after a spike, can disrupt the ability to concentrate and learn.
The metabolic rate is affected by the degree of muscle mass - the metabolic rate is
higher in those with more muscle mass. Muscle burns many more calories than fat does
and losing muscle therefore reduces the metabolic rate and the number of calories
burned.
It is important that people maintain a healthy metabolic rate, particularly when they are
dieting, and this requires them to both diet and exercise sensibly. Strength-enhancing
exercises are particularly effective at increasing muscle mass. For every additional
pound of muscle a person develops, the body burns up approximately 50 more calories
every day.
To avoid an unhealthy drop in the metabolic rate, experts generally recommend calorie
intake is never restricted to less than 1,000 to 1,200 calories per day.

Poem
I learned that there are plenty different diets that can help someone to lose weight and can
improve a persons overall sense of well-being. On this topic my views has changed because I
finally got to know efficiently how a diet can changed your life physically and mentally. The
pieces make me feel confident and an explorer into new things for example; in the article it
shows us what happens to your body when you diet and the effects of cortisol. The brochure
“Mediterranean Diet” shows us how diet can help improved our health . The poem “Monday
Diet” can relate to my life as I myself is dieting and the poem tells us the struggles of trying to
diet on a Monday after eating all weekend which will be known as cheat days.
Reflection 2
My first piece, an article titled “Diet and Nutrition” uses alliteration “ essential fatty acids from
fat-containing food” which tell us essential fatty acid from fat-containing food is good for health
but our body doesn’t know how to synthesize it.
My second piece, a brochure titled “Mediterranean Diet” uses assonance “At twice a week, eat
fish and seafood the best sources of heart- and brain – healthy omega-3’s.” It mostly repeats the
vowel ‘e’ and tells the reader to eat seafoods twice a week for the best source of healthy omega
3s.
My third piece a poem called “Monday Diet” uses the simile “Today is Monday I'll start once
more with my diet like thousand times before” compares how the person is starting a new diet on
Monday like a thousand times before meaning just like other days.
I find the language strategy used in Reflection 2 really help me to understand my pieces better
than before. For reference, my second piece had a lot of pervasive language. As it is a brochure
about diet it persuade people to do the diet, so it can benefit their health.
Reflection 3
What I have learned from my sub-topic, Dieting, is that it's one of the most important factor of
having a healthy lifestyle. As I myself is on a diet, researching this was very helpful as I got to
learn many different types of diets. Working with my SBA group had it's challenges but we
mange to pull through and help each other with the SBA which I find was beneficial. One of our
members didn’t have a phone and was using his parent's phone, so we came up to make an
Instagram group chat since everyone has access to it and talk about the SBA from there. Nobody
didn’t really have experience, so we gather our knowledge, put in our contribution and was able
to pull through with info for our SBA's. Overall, I personally find our grammar and vocabulary
improved better than before and self discipline increased slightly.
Plan for The Oral Presentation
I have chosen to write a speech because I want explain and educate other students on how
important dieting is for your health and well-being. As I am dieting myself, I can use my
experience and write this speech to show how important dieting is. The name of my speech is
“Why we should Diet?”
Oral Presentation
Good Day ladies and gentlemen, today I came to explain about my subtopic Dieting and why we
should diet?
Dieting is one’s food intake for the purpose of improving one’s physical condition especially for
the purpose of loosing weight.
As a Trini, it is hard to loose weight because of the food we eat for instance roti, doubles, pelau
plus more.. and no we not including ceorle.
Our body need plenty of minerals to keep us up to date with our health. Some minerals our body
need are Fibre; as it helps to keep you full which is perfect for a weight loss journey. Some food
that contain fibre are apples, avocados, berries and broccoli. Protein; help build lean muscle,
reduce muscle loss and helps with a fast recovery after exercise or an injury.( this is perfect for
body builders).Foods that contain protein are meat like chicken, fish, eggs and dairy product.
Vitamins; helps shove up bones, heal wounds and bolster your immune system. Food containing
vitamins are fruits, potatoes and red and green peppers.
Dieting is also good during this Covid-19 pandemic. As one of the minerals vitamin can help
boost your immune system which can help to fight off the disease.
If you are on a weight loss journey or want to start one, here are some diets you can try: The
Mediterranean Diet; studies shown it’s good for weight loss as you will be consuming plan-
based foods. This can help reduce the accumulation of belly fat and increase your lifespan, or
Low- carbohydrate Diet; it’s very effective for weight loss, according to research. This diet is
consist of fish, eggs, chicken and greens. Reducing carbs fends to reduce your appetite and cause
automatic weight loss.
As a Trini, yes I love my KFC and doubles but watching out for my health is very important as it
can help improve you physically and mentally.
Our group members conducted an investigation into the topic “Nutrition and healthy eating”. We
furthered our research by exploring…Fitness, dieting, The negative effects of smoking and
Moderate alcohol intake.
The chosen artefacts were proven to not be difficult to find as a result of “A Healthy Lifestyle”
being such a dominant and well-recognized topic in today’s society, culture, tradition and
environment. There are a number of various methods by which individuals of today’s world are
endeavoring to practice a healthy lifestyle. Whereby it be fitness, mental health, dieting and even
utilizing more environmentally friendly articles. The pieces were easily accessible and we
ensured to utilize technology and internet to find great research articles which in return, has
proven to develop our research skills.
The group decided on these three artefacts via our SBA group chat on the popular social media
platform, Instagram, used for easy communication and further discussion during class. We had
multiple discussions and brainstorming sessions and decided upon ‘A Poem About Exercising’,
‘What is the relationship between Nutrition and Health?” and “Smoking News To Make You
Cringe”. These three pieces were chosen from a range of fifteen informative and educational
artefacts. The rationale for selecting/determining the said artefacts are as a result of them
covering the topic effectively, giving details regarding the topics and they were quite
comprehensive.
My group members and myself united to devise this group written report. Particular
tasks/responsibilities were assigned to each individual and the process of choosing the artefacts
were done both competently and quickly.
The three pieces selected were linked to “A healthy lifestyle” because each piece was
representative of our broad topic. There was a selection of fifteen artefacts amongst the group.
The names of the chosen artefacts are as follows: “A poem about Exercising, Nithya Venkat” ,
“The Relationship between health and nutrition, The World Book” and “Smoking and Tobacco,
CDC”
As a group we learned that smoking leads to various diseases that harm our organs.
Secondly, we recognize that proper nutrition is crucial to our physical and mental health for
optimal performance as CSEC students. Thirdly, exercise works in conjunction with nutrition,
the body and brain to achieve good health.
Based on the three artefacts, we identified their major issues were; laziness in the first piece.
The poet is motivating the reader to become active because there are many benefits to exercising
and drawbacks to laziness. The second piece highlighted why good nutrition is important for
your health and it shows the reader how they can improve their diet and overall health. If we
don’t get enough nutrition our body will not function properly. Finally, in the third piece we saw
that smoking leads to diseases such as cancer and disability problems in nearly every organ of
the body.
Relationship and nutrition & health- the world book,
A poem about exercising- Nithya Venkat
Smoking and Tobacco- CDC
Our Group congregated on the school benches to discuss the report. The group leader Sydney,
entrusted each individual group member a task for the report. Darren Thompson was assigned
the task of proofreading and editing a few components of the report. Masoud Paul was assigned
with proof reading, Gianna Calderon was assigned to do further research into the portfolio,
Adriel Benjamin was assigned with meshing the ideas and suggestions of the group together and
Sydney Henry, the group leader, was tasked with answering the questions for the content of the
report, editing and shortening the report.
