IB PRESCRIBED THEMES
These are the five prescribed themes from English IB syllabus that you are studying in a higher level.
The aim is that you can discuss about relevant issues concerned personal, local or national, and
global interest. You can compare your culture to other cultures finding similarities or differences in
order to broaden your international mindedness. The IB Prescribed themes have the following topics
for each theme that you have been studying until now.
These themes are also used to make connections with the literary work. That´s to say how the novels
link to the themes from English B syllabus. It´s important that you can interpret and evaluate your ideas,
make connections and comparisons with your own cultural experiences. Finally, try to have an authentic
conversation to the best of your ability.
● FOLLOW UP DISCUSSION
In the second part of the interview, you will interact with the teacher for about 4 to 5 minutes, so
the teacher will ask questions according to the student´s presentation. This conversation is
about the extract and the understanding of the whole novel.
● GENERAL DISCUSSION
In this final part of the interview, the discussion goes around one or two of the IB prescribed
themes. It means that the extract is related to these IB themes: Identities, Experiences, Human
ingenuity, Social organization, Sharing the planet.
