VOCAL MUSIC

The vocal music of Mindanao reflects the natural and spiritual life of the various people in the
area: Lumad, Christian, Muslim Filipinos. Its many forms show the creative expressions that Filipinos
use to express the emotions, events, and word view.

lead/central melodic instrument for the entire ensemble.
2. Gabbang - is similar to a xylophone. It is made of wooden
box with one end wider than the other, and with an open top.

long and made of wood. It has a stick to support in its lower
end and is played in the same position as cello.

Rhythmic Dance: Tinikling
What is Dance and Folkdance?

DANCE is a series of movements set to music where there emerge organization, structure, and
pattern.

FOLKDANCE is…

1. A type of dance that depicts culture, tradition, and heritage to generation.

2. A cultural art form handed down from generation to generation.
3. The customs, beliefs, occupations, and rituals of the people of a certain region or country.
4. Culture and heritage that every Filipino must give pride and respect.

TINIKLING
The Tinikling is said to be named after the long-legged bird called the tikling in the Philippines.
Someone who dances the Tinikling imitates the movements of a tikling
bird (hence, tikling-like) as the bird walks over the grass or dodges
bamboo traps set by Filipino farmers on vast rice fields.
The traditional dance, which usually involves a pair of two
bamboo poles, is the oldest in the country and its appeal has spread
across the globe—particularly to the United States.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gallirallus_philippensis_Lord_Howe_Island_1.jpg
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Tinikling dance originated during the Spanish occupation
in the Philippines—particularly on the island of Leyte. Rice farmers on
the Visayan Islands usually set up bamboo traps to protect their fields, yet tikling birds dodged their
traps. Locals imitated the birds’ movement, and supposedly, that’s how this dramatic traditional folk
dance was born.
However, according to legend, the dance originated during the Spanish colonial era when
locals were ordered by the King of Spain to work on large plantations. Those who did not follow his
orders or worked too slowly were given a punishment: to stand in between two bamboo poles. These
poles were then clapped together in an effort to beat the Filipino natives’ feet. To escape this
punishment, the Filipinos would jump when the two poles were about to be clapped. This practice of
jumping between the poles eventually transformed from a challenge into an artistic dance.
Alongside the Cariñosa dance, the Tinikling is considered a national dance in the Philippines
and almost every Filipino knows how to do it. Since it’s a dramatic dance, it’s usually performed on
special occasions like traditional Filipino festivals
or at school and theater performances. Some say
that this dance represents most Filipinos’ two
main character traits: They’re resilient and fun-
loving.
PROPS/MATERIALS
• two pairs of bamboo poles that are each
6–12 feet long (about 1.8–3.7 meters).
While only two bamboo poles are
involved in this dance, some versions
use four bamboo poles, where the pairs
are arranged in a cross-like pattern. To
avoid getting their ankles caught in between the poles, dancers must listen closely and follow
the rhythm of the music. (See diagram 1)https://gtactivity.ca/sites/gtactivity.prod/files/activity-images/tinikling_dance.jpg

STRESS MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Remember, an orderly mind is a healthy, positive and stress-free mind.

‘’When you are resting, your blood pressure lowers, heart rate slows, and muscle relax.
After sleep, you will feel invigorated and ready to face the day’s challenges.’’

Stretch your bones and muscles.

Physical activities release tension in the body and provide a relaxing feeling.

One of the causes of stress is not being able to finish the tasks that are need for the
day. To manage time well:
• Keep a daily schedule of activities.
• Identify your priorities; Do these things first then accomplish the less important
ones.

Narrate your successes and winning moments.

You may either keep a drawing pad, write songs, or choreograph a dance to express
what you think and you feel.

Find people whom you can share your feelings and interesting stories, to be with, in
doing activities, offer help to and a lot more.

It is best to find comfort and advice from people who know a lot- parents, relatives, or
even teachers.
They may give you a different perspective and solutions to your difficult problem.

MENTAL ILLNESS
If stress is prolonged and you are not able to manage it well, you may develop mental illness.
These are disorders that disrupt thinking, feeling, moods and behavior and impair daily functioning.

TRIGGERS- are events, conditions or situations that may “activate” a person’s tendency to experience
symptoms of mental disorders.
