Lesson 1 - Introduction to Globalization

The story below would drive you closer to the true meaning of globalization. Read the story of “Gio,
Latif and Laksa” (retrieved from page 3 of The Contemporary World by Claudio and Abinales ) to have a
clearer picture what makes us global.
The quoted part of the story would allow the students realize how globalization affect their lives.

“The story revolves around the 3 students named Gio a Filipino student sent to Sydney,
Australia to participate the international Model UN competition. He made plenty of new friends and
became particularly close to a Malaysian student named Latif, who is a Muslim University in Kuala
Lumpur. The two started their acquaintance when Latif asked where Gio was from. Upon
discovering the Gio was from the Philippines, Latif declared that he was a big fan of Filipino actors
Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa. Gio was surprised to learn that Latif had seen every
episode of the ABS-CBN telenovela Pangako sa ‘Yo (The Promise”). Gio was ashamed that he did
not know as much about Malaysia as Latif knew about the Philippines. In return Gio asked Latif what
his country was like. Latif explained that in Kuala Lumpur, one can find Chinese, Indian, and Malay
cuisines….

What is globalization?

Attached is a video clip about globalization, after watching this video the students are
expected to relate and define what globalization is.

Globalization - YouTube

Based on the video, we can say that

 It is an economic process
 Creation of homogenous and standardized products
 Recognition by organizations that business must be global and not local focus
 It is an unprecedented scope, shape, number and complexity of business relationship
Conducted across international boundaries

There are three interrelated factors of globalization.

 Proximity – it means closeness. When we refer to organizations, they operate in a
much closer distance than ever before to their customers, competitors, suppliers and
government. Today’s proximity is a function of the shrinking globe simply because
today’s communication and technology allows people around the world to share
voice, video and facsimile information in minutes.
 Location – refers to the integration of organization’s operation across several
international boundaries. For example a Nokia phone is manufactured in Finland
and sold worldwide to customers who use the equipment to connect with anyone.
 Attitude – is the application of new and open management practices internationally.
It combines a curiosity about the world outside one’s national borders with
willingness to develop the capabilities for participating in the global economy.
Four Dimensions of Globalization
The four dimension of globalization will review the student’s background in Applied
Economics. The details on how resources are utilized and optimized with the appropriate
pricing methods, marketing strategies, trading and financial markets in targeting international
trade and techniques of production will be discuss base on the following dimensions.
1. The globalization of trade of goods and services

2. The globalization of financial and capital markets

3. The globalization of technology and communication

4. The globalization of production

After studying the above dimensions, let us define globalization as

 The process through which an increasingly flow of ideas, people, goods and services,
technology and capital leads to the integration of economies and societies at the speed
unprecedented in effect and outcomes. ( as cited by Danug & Campanilla, 2004, p.81)
 Globalization refers to the integration and intensification of the national markets to a
wider global market signified by the increased free trade.
