Your teenage relative is about to take her university entrance exams and she has been feeling stressed and anxious. Write her an email empathising with her situation and telling her about some practical solutions for managing exam stress. To: ruthpantaleon_25@hotmail.com From: art2dplus@live.com.mx Subject: Cheer up! Youll make it to the top! Hi Ruth! Im sorry to hear that you are feeling anxious because of your entrance exams next month. I can imagine how much stress you are under because it was not a long time ago when I was in the same situation. For that reason, I want to share with you a couple of useful tips that really helped me with my own exams. Have you thought of asking for help to train for the examinations? Just as an athlete needs a manager, you could find someone experienced to help you organize your time and activities and remind you of your priorities (especially when you lose concentration and start wasting your time unconsciously). And talking about priorities, why dont you focus your attention on your exams and take some time off from your part-time job? That way youll have much more available time and its likely that youll stop feeling overwhelmed. Im sure that your boss will understand you perfectly, as he also studied a career. Well, these are just a few of my ideas for the moment, but if you want to know more just drop me a line and you will receive my answer immediately. I hope my advice helps. Write back and let me know. Love, David

Life is competitive therefore competition should be encouraged from an early age Write an article for a child development journal evaluating this statement and expressing how far you agree with its hypothesis. Crawlers competition? It is evident that we live in an extremely highly competitive era and that this forces individuals of all kinds and ages to rival for survival or be surpassed by more capable people. Recently, a controversy about encouraging competition from an early age due to the exigencies of modern life has arisen. In my opinion, competition is not just sound but also essential. In the first place, competition is unavoidable and requires a great deal of preparation. In other words, even when it is not enjoyable, the limited nature of the resources and opportunities in our world makes competition an inevitable outcome for which only those who have gotten ready thoroughly will have the opportunity to succeed. Therefore, if the preparation of a child is delayed excessively it may be self-defeating for him and consequently provoke a lack of adaptability in later stages. Another argument in favor of competition is that it has proved to be the cornerstone of progress and development. By setting exacting standards, entire nations have reached impressive levels of productivity and wealth. A similar situation has place at a personal level, sufficient reason for giving careful attention to the training of a young person since his early age. In conclusion, I believe that having no fear of putting pressure on children through competition is more beneficial than damaging. Even though this measure appears tough and exaggerated, in the long run it enables children to face the real life hardships in a skillful and more satisfying way.

You recently visited some new acquaintances for the first time and were surprised to find that their lifestyle was totally different from yours. Write a description for a lifestyle magazine of the main differences you encountered and say how they made you look at your own lifestyle in a new light. An enlightening visit to Cuba It has been said that you start appreciating your motherland when far away from it, and that is precisely what I experienced while being abroad in Cuba, the place called the Island by its own inhabitants. I have to say that during my stay at this unforgettable, beautiful place, I found myself seized by bittersweet emotions, which led me to a profound introspection I had never achieved before. One could go to Cuba without noticing its many contradictions, but thanks to the extraordinary insight of a candid host, I met the real thing. Far from enjoying the typical ostentatious trip that most tourists enjoy while treated as semi-gods, I saw the true colors of a needy, disenchanted society which lives tired of its worn out patriotism story. Contradictions? Indeed there are. Contradictions such as being part of one greatly cultured civilization and simultaneously belong to a stagnant, isolated subculture plunged into an abject misery, with no hopes, no dreams for the future. Such as being part of a system that offered great welfare, and only delivered disappointment, along with a sense of despair that conducts thousands to the seashore where they embrace the fantasy of pursuing the American dream or dying in the attempt. I went to Cuba trying to find glamour and returned promising never to forget this lesson of humility from my beloved new friend, the man from the Island, the man who taught me the true meaning of liberty.
