New Foods, New Diets

On March 26, 1662, Samuel Pepys and four friends had dinner at his home in London, England. They
ate beef, cheese, two kinds of fish, and six chickens. They did not eat any fresh fruit or vegetables.
Over three hundred years ago, people in Europe ate differently from today. They looked different too.
They were not thin, they were overweight. Today people are learning more about health. People in
North America and Europe are changing their way of eating. They are eating a lot of fresh fruit and
vegetables. Many of the vegetables are raw. They do not cook these vegetables because cooking
takes away some vitamins. They are also eating less sugar. They are not eating much red meat. They
are drinking less cola and coffee. They are eating low-fat foods. Diets are changing in a lot of
countries, but this is not always good news. For example, the Japanese diet was very healthy for
many years. People ate a lot of fish and vegetables. Now, they are eating more and more beef, sugar
and dairy products (ice cream, butter and cheese), so there is more sickness such as heart disease.
Sometimes people eat lots of junk food because it tastes good. Or, other times, they do the opposite:
eat very little because they want to lose weight. When are people going to learn? Too much food, too
little food and the wrong foods are all bad ideas.

FAST FOOD OR SLOW FOOD?
In North America people are always in a hurry. Many children have special lessons or sports activities
after school. Parents often work late and don’t get home until 7 or 8 o’clock at night. Many women
work at full-time jobs, and come home late. It isn’t a surprise that the average North American family
doesn’t have the time to eat many meals together. When a family takes the time to eat a meal
together, often there isn’t enough time to prepare the food. That is why ‘’fast food’’ is so popular in
North America. A person spends about 50 dollars on fast food each week. Fast food is food such as
hamburgers, pizza, submarine sandwiches, or fried chicken. People usually buy this food from a
restaurant chain such as Pizza Hut, Mc Donald’s or Kentucky Fried Chicken. Fast food saves work
and time, but it is not very healthy. Fast food is popular in many countries. American fast-food
companies now have restaurants all over the world. There are McDonald’s and Pizza Hut restaurants
in Bangkok, Beijing, Moscow, and Mexico City, as well as in Paris, London, and Rome. Not everyone
is happy about the spread of North American fast food. A group of people in Italy wants to fight the

All That Fat

Fat is the body’s major form of energy storage, and our bodies are designed to make fat. Many fats
that we eat are really a combination of two different substances. These are saturated fatty acids and
unsaturated fatty acids. The first group of fatty acids come from animal foods such as milk, meat and
cheese. The second group of fatty acids are different Ñ they come from plants and fish. Together,
these two substances make up the fat content in food. We usually think that fat is bad for our bodies,
but this is not true. Our bodies need some fat because it protects our bodies from the cold and gives
energy. Also, the fat in our body helps to make important hormones. We need these to keep our
bodies at the right temperature and keep blood pressure at the right level. Fat also helps us to have
healthy skin and hair. Our bodies need some fat to work well, but some of us eat too much fat. This is
not good for our body because when we eat a lot of fat, we can get heart disease or diabetes. Foods
with lots of fat in them - cookies, chocolate, French fries - taste good, so it is not bad for our health
when we eat some cake at someone's birthday party, but we must not eat these kinds of food all
the time. Staying healthy and keeping our bodies in shape is easier when we eat low- fat-food and we
will feel better, too.
