JANUARY 2022
Energy Efficiency Lab

Lighting System Efficiency

Objective:
• To design a practical lab to measure lighting efficiency
• To perform practical measurement of lighting efficiency
Task:
In a group of 4 students, you are required to discuss ways to measure lighting
efficiency. You are given a budget RM70 for each group to design a proper system to
measure the light intensity and efficiency of different type of lamps. You can use the
any measurement devices available in the Lab (ammeter, voltmeter, power meter).
You might need to install app to measure light (lux meter or light meter) in your
smartphone. The test module that you are going to construct should have the following
criteria:
• Must have at least three or more different type of lamps to be tested.
• Must have independent switch to turn on and off each lamp.
• Must have access or point to make it easier to measure current, voltage
and power.
After completing the design, your group will construct your test module/board and
conduct analysis of different type of lamps utilize in domestic and industrial application.
Based on the data from your test, discuss on different characteristic that need to be
considered when investigating the performance of different lamps such as
• Lifetime of the lamps
• Lamps efficiency and efficacy
• Cost – price of lamp and operating cost
• Light direction control
• Any other relevant criteria.
You have two weeks to complete your assignment.
