Pros and Cons of TEDx Talks
TEDx Talks is one of the well-known YouTube channels that contains many videos about the
experiences of inspiring people, from young to old speakers. It doesn't stop there, TEDx Talks
also provide various subtitles from different countries. The number of viewers can reach
millions, if the contents of the video are deemed attractive to many people. Then, can TEDx
Talks be a source of learning English? Here are some of the advantages.
The advantage is that the first, TEDx Talks speakers are use English in delivering their material.
So, students can hear how they pronounce English and how they process words.
Second, when they speak, they not only use words but also use gestures and sometimes use
pictures on the screen so that the audience can more easily grasp the meaning. From here,
students can learn what good public speaking looks like so that the audience still pays attention
to them.
Third, the speakers are not only speak with monotonous intonation but also go up and down
and add jokes to it. This can be learned by students, how to invite the audience to be entertained
and feel bored.
Then, the materials presented are very varied so that students can choose which topics are
interesting for them so they feel more comfortable while learning. I see that the material
presented has been well mastered because not everyone can get the opportunity to speak at
TEDx Talks. That is, there are things that need to be qualified in advance from the applicants.
Furthermore, they can inspire students through the works or contributions they have made. So,
in learning English, students can add a lot of new vocabulary related to what they are good at.
Then, they will also give advice based on the experiences they have. Everyone who is
successful, must have gone through many things in their life so that students can also be
motivated to learn English more deeply because in fact, the more we understand English, the
more things we can learn.
Then, TEDx Talks are very easy to access because they are free so students don't have to bother
paying for anything, just for the internet. In fact, many Indonesian students have not used the
internet properly. Therefore, watching TEDx Talks can develop the potential of Indonesian
students to become even better.
Apart from that, I also feel that after watching their videos, I get new ideas. And this can help
students develop the ideas they once had and use English as a tool to make it easier to develop
their ideas into products.
Finally, TEDx Talks can also trigger students to start thinking about the future so that what
they thought was impossible becomes possible. There are so many windows that can be opened
for a better future.
Not only the advantages of TEDx Talks also have disadvantages. Among the first, because the
speakers in it come from different countries, their accents are also different, so students may
find it a bit difficult to follow their accent.
Second, even though they are masters of the material, it does not mean that students have to
swallow the information contained in it whole. Therefore teachers must direct in advance how
to filter information so that what is captured by students is not wrong.
Third, everyone has different opportunities and strengths. Even though the speakers convince
us to do some things, it doesn't mean we will succeed in the same way so the disciples also
have to know the reality. In the end, we don't know what they have done in detail to get to that
point.
Then, the meaning of the subtitles is not necessarily 100% correct because I've read that the
translation doesn't really match what is conveyed. In other words, there is a meaning that is lost
because it seems that anyone who is on the internet can do the translation if they want.
Then, teachers must warn students to remain critical when watching the videos because we
have to do research from various sources so that the material that draws us from there doesn't
lead us astray. However, everyone has a different purpose when talking, maybe there are other
missions that we don't know about them.
Furthermore, not all of what they talk about is realistic so the students have to find out in
advance what privileges the speakers have. In this case, more people are promoting themselves
so they feel they look great in people's eyes.
Then, they also have a strategy so that what is conveyed looks neutral so that it can attract the
attention of many viewers. Here, maybe we also need to see that behind these TEDx Talks
there are benefits to be taken as well.
After I read one of the articles about the badness of TEDx Talks, I saw that public speaking
was the only qualification. So, if there are people who can speak well even though what is said
is not necessarily completely true, they can appear there.
Lastly, TEDx Talks focus on controlling the emotions of the audience so they feel enchanted.
They promote a lot of things and also give them so that the audience can feel what they are
feeling. Maybe, what they convey is only good things so that the audience feels related to them.
The point is, students can't trust them 100%.
In conclusion, TEDx Talks have many advantages and disadvantages, so it's a good idea for
teachers who want to make TEDx Talks a teaching resource to give students directions
beforehand in consuming their videos. Besides students can learn English, they can also learn
how to think critically in responding to many new things from there. Without filtration, students
may take the wrong path in achieving their goals.
