Being a teenager stressing you
out?
If so, look into a new program
being offered at the Mount Laurel
Library.
Registration is now open for
teens in grades 6 to 9 to partici-
pate in Keys to Innervisions. Keys
to Innervisions, or KIV, focuses
on issues that are critical to
youth, including social and fami-
ly issues, learning and school per-
formance, self-acceptance, per-
sonal accountability, managing
emotions, substance use and
abuse, and dealing with transi-
tions that occur in adolescence.
The KIV program, provided
free of charge by Prevention Plus
of Burlington County, will be a
four-week seminar, meeting on
Sept. 22 and 29, Oct. 6 and 13 from
4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mount Lau-
rel Library, located at 100 Walt
Whitman Ave. Snacks and prizes
will be provided at each session.
Registration can be completed
by phone at 234-7319 ext. 333 or on-
line at
http://events.mtlaurel.lib.nj.us/eva
nced/lib/eventcalendar.asp.
Bonnie Marcus, prevention ed-
ucator with Prevention Plus, is
enthused about the upcoming
event in Mount Laurel.
I think its a fantastic pro-
gram, she said, noting it focuses
on changing the beliefs and be-
haviors of teenagers so that they
lead productive lives.
The program also tries to get
teens to steer away from violence,
alcohol, drugs and bullying. It fo-
cuses on self-esteem and reinforc-
ing positive behavior.
The KIV program been around
since the 1980s.
Marcus said she has two
teenage children and sees what
positive influence does.
To me, its very important to
guide children to the right path,
she said, noting the program has
been very successful at the
Burlington County Juvenile De-
tention Center as well as at the
Harrington Middle School in
Mount Laurel.
With the Internet, Facebook
and electronic devices easily at-
tainable, Marcus said teens today
face challenges teens a genera-
tion ago wouldnt have even con-
sidered.

The Mt. Laurel Sun
Its the image drivers never
want to see: a ball rolling onto the
roadway being chased by a child
oblivious to traffic.
That is just one of the scenar-
ios the Mount Laurel Fire Depart-
ment wants residents to be pre-
pared for now that school has
started.
Chris Burnett, provisional
deputy chief, warns motorists to
be wary of children: If they see a
ball or a bike or anything else in-
dicating a child is nearby, be care-
ful.
Despite having six elementary
schools, there have been no seri-
ous issues of safety in Mount
Laurel.
Weve been very fortunate,
Burnett said.
He also said crossing guards, as
well as police, are vigilant.
Burnett stressed that parents
should talk to kids about walking
around the schools, crossing the
street, and wearing helmets while
on wheels.
He also said parents should
properly seat children. The de-
partment offers a child safety seat
inspection through the Burling-
ton County Sheriff s Office.
Burnett said firefighters will
roll out a fire prevention program
at area schools this fall.
Lt. Kathleen Kirvan said fire-
fighters try to use alternate
routes when going out on a call.
They avoid school zones whenev-
er possible because children flock
to the engines with their lights
and sirens.
All Mount Laurel firefighters
have undergone certified emer-
gency vehicle operator (CEVO)
training.
If there are two different ways
to get to a particular area, well
try to avoid the school areas be-
cause of the fact that there are
kids in the area; they may run to-
ward the fire trucks, Kirvan
said. Thats one thing we do to
keep our kids safe.
However, if personnel need to
fight a fire near a school, they are
extra vigilant about kids in the
area.
Safe school year tips
please see SAFETY, page 3
Its a totally different world,
she said. Theyre inviting in
strangers.
Its really important to fit in
for teenagers, Marcus added,
noting that access they have at
Mount Laurel Library is amaz-
ing because it brings them to-
gether in a positive way.
The grant that brings Preven-
tion Plus to the library for August
2011 to August 2012 was provided
by the Department of Human
Services and the Division of Ad-
diction Services.
Marcus would not disclose the
amount of the grant.
Samantha Marker, teen librari-
an at Mount Laurel Library, said
the program sounded really
worthwhile.
She said teens use the library a
lot and there is a thriving teen
program there.
Teens also have an advisory
board through which they can
offer feedback to the librarians
about how to help them meet
their needs.
One of the main goals of the
program is making positive
choices and it addresses every-
thing from gang involvement to
stress from homework.
It can be something really in-
tense or just everyday stressors,
Marker said. Its a tough time for
them.
She said teens operate in a
world where a lot of information
is available instantaneously.

Spaces are limited, so don't miss out!
Because some schools are on
main roadways, the department
informs drivers that there could
be children in the area at all times
of the day.
If a child chases a ball he or
she wont necessarily think like
an adult and might go right for
the ball, Kirvan said, adding mo-
torists should look straight ahead
and to the sides.
She also said safety begins in
the home with parents.
They need to make sure that
they reiterate to their children
about safety, Kirvan said. You
cant just tell them once because,
while it might sink in that time,
maybe it doesnt so youve just got
to keep vigilant and remind them
that the crosswalks are in place
for a particular reason: They have
to go to the crosswalks where
there are crossing guards who are
responsible for getting them safe-
ly across the street.
John Presner has been a fire-
fighter for nine years.
He said transitioning from
summer vacation to school time
is a good time to be aware of safe-
ty concerns.

Home improvement contrac-
tors, gas prices, charities: All
merit scrutiny.
Now that the flood waters are
receding and residents are assess-
ing the damage to their homes,
the Burlington County Office of
Consumer Affairs is alerting
homeowners to be extremely
wary of the predatory activities
of fly-by-night home improve-
ment contractors.
Thats not all.
Natural disasters also often
give rise to phony charities who
falsely claim to be raising funds
to assist victims. And, as if that
werent enough, warnings about
gasoline price gouging are also
circulating throughout the state.
Our residents have spent the
last week preparing for and bat-
tling the worst that Hurricane
Irene had to throw at us, Free-
holder Mary Ann OBrien said re-
cently. Now they have to be pre-
pared for the potential consumer
abuses that often arise from these
types of emergencies.
Residents need to guard them-
selves against scammers posing
as legitimate home improvement
contractors, OBrien added, not-
ing these also include storm
chasers those scam artists
from other states who descend
upon storm victims.
Whether they are approached
by contractors or initiating the
contact, homeowners should be
sure to obtain the contractors
state registration number. They
can then call the county Con-
sumer Affairs Office at 609-265-
5054 to find out if the registration
is valid and if there is a record of
complaints.
No money should change
hands until this information is
sought and received, Consumer
Affairs Director Renee Borstad
said.
Finally, on the topic of gas
gouging, the law is clear: The law
prohibits an excessive price in-
crease of 10 percent or more
above the price at which it was
sold just prior to the hurricane.
Moreover, New Jersey law pro-
hibits gas stations from changing
the retail price of motor fuel
more than once in a 24-hour peri-
od.
Anyone with any evidence of
price gouging should contact
Consumer Affairs immediately,
Borstad said. We will investi-
gate.

10 THE MT. LAUREL SUN SEPTEMBER 14-20, 2011
W
ith summer vacation in the
rear-view mirror, students
of all ages are back in
school.
That means sports, theater, music
and academic achievements are right
around the corner. And we want to
hear about them.
These days, a lot of the news about
schools concerns taxes and budgets
and thats for good reason. Gov.
Christies new normal was a game-
changer for districts across the state.
Balancing the goal of providing a
quality education with an apprecia-
tion of the taxpayer is an even more
daunting task these days.
Other times, there are stories about
kids getting into trouble or other prob-
lems in school.
But we recognize that theres more
to school news than debates over
money or stories about troublemaking
kids. Every day, students do remark-
able things. They excel in athletics or
academics. They succeed in music and
theater. They perform tremendous
acts of giving.
We here at The Sun love to hear
about these achievements and to share
them with everyone in your communi-
ty.
But, to do that, we need your help.
We need to know about your events
and activities well in advance. And, if
we cant make it out to cover an event,
wed be most grateful if you could
email a photo or short press release.
So, as the new school year begins,
please keep us in mind. If youre a
teacher or administrator, give us a
heads up about the good things going
on in your school. If youre a parent,
dont be shy about sharing good news
about your children.
These kids deserve a round of ap-
plause. With your assistance, we can
help make that happen.
Back to classes
When you have school news, tell us about it
Got news?
As a new academic year begins,
please keep The Sun in mind if you
want to share your school news.

Police say a man
in Lindenwold killed a robot
A man has been charged with beating a
police robot to death during an armed
stand-off last week.
The Camden County Sheriff s depart-
ment said the law enforcement droid with
video and audio equipment was smashed
into junk with a sledgehammer.
The robot had been sent up to an open
window of a house on Linden Avenue to
communicate with Thomas Kane Jr., 26,
who police say had barricaded himself in-
side his home. Officers were responding to
a report of shots fired.
While sheriff s officers spoke to Kane
through the machine and the suspect al-
legedly responded with profanities, the
woman inside the home ran out a back
door.
Though eventually officers found out
Kane was now alone, they sent the robot to
look through the window of the front door
and check whether a child might still be in-
side.
Thats when Kane allegedly smashed the
window, came outside, pounded on the
robot with a sledgehammer and pushed it
off his porch, causing $20,000 in damage to
the 700-pound machine.

Millville native Mike Trout
named ML Player of the Year
Mike Trout is representing South Jersey
admirably. In 2009, the Los Angeles Angels
selected the former Millville baseball star
in the first round of the Major League
Baseball draft.
He went on to shine at the 2010 All-Stars
Future Game, and was called up to the big
leagues this year. He is now contributing
for a team that is in a fight for a playoff
spot.
Last week, he added yet another accom-
plishment to his collection: Baseball Amer-
ica named Trout its 2011 Minor League
Player of the Year.
At Double-A Arkansas this year, Trout
recorded a .326 batting average, .414 on-
base percentage and .544 slugging percent-
age quite impressive numbers for a kid
whos not even 21 years old.

Another scam implicates
workers at TD Bank
What exactly is going on with employees
at TD Bank? Yet another story in the Couri-
er-Post says bank workers helped run a
scam against customers.
In this case, federal authorities say two
Philadelphia men created counterfeit
checks for actual TD bank accounts, de-
posited them into the bank and withdrew
money out of that fictitious amount all
through a TD teller who was in on the
scheme.

The Twin Towers

The final scene from Martin Scorseses
2002 film Gangs of New York is eerie in
many ways.
Its a brutal, bloody film about New York
City in the mid-1800s. The film closes with
a scene that shows the destruction and
then the re-build of Manhattans skyline.
Scorsese got some grief about the scene
because of its depiction of New York City
in destruction a touchy subject to say the
least, being that it was released only one
year after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist at-
tacks on New York City and Washington,
D.C. The movie, though, was filmed before
the attacks, and Scorsese defended keeping
the final scene as he originally planned.
Lives of all Americans and, in fact, for
people worldwide changed since 9/11. But
the iconic images that were destroyed in
physical form that day live on.

For the thousands who converged on the
Salem County Fairgrounds for the
Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival, it
wasnt just about a particular band. While
some people may follow their favorite mu-
sician from stage to stage, for many, this
was more about the sound itself.
