Le présent: the
present tense

What is le présent?
The present tense in French grammar (le
présent) corresponds to the English
simple present. It talks about facts,
current situations and repeated actions
in the present, as well as scheduled
future actions. To conjugate a verb in
the French present tense, we add
specific endings to the infinitive of the
verb depending on whether it ends in -er,
-ir or -re.

Le passé composé

What is the passé composé?

The passé composé is the most important past
tense in French. It corresponds to the English
simple past or sometimes the present perfect.
The passé composé talks about actions that
were completed in the past and emphasises
their results or consequences in the present. In
spoken language, the passé composé is always
used instead of the passé simple. We form the
passé composé using the auxiliary verbs avoir
or être followed by the past participle (le
participe passé) of the verb.

L’Imparfait

What is l’imparfait?
L’imparfait (the imperfect) is a French past
tense. It describes states and actions that were
ongoing or repeated in the past. The imperfect
can correspond to the English simple past
tense, but also to structures such as used to
and would and even the past progressive.
L’imparfait is used to tell stories and report on
past actions, mostly in written contexts. We
conjugate the imperfect by adding the endings
-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez and -aient to the root
of the present tense nous form of the verb.

Le Plus-que Parfait

What is the le plus-que-

parfait?
Le plus-que-parfait corresponds to
the past perfect tense in English. We
use it to talk about an action or
situation that took place before
another past action. The plus-que-
parfait is often used when telling
stories and anecdotes to provide
background information on situations
that occurred prior to the main action

Le Futur Simple

What is the futur simple?

Le futur simple corresponds to the
will-future tense in English. We
mostly use this tense to talk about
future plans or intentions, as well as
to make predictions about what may
occur in the future. We conjugate
the future tense by adding the
endings -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez and -
ont to the infinitive of the verb.

Le Futur Anterieur

What is the futur antérieur?

Le futur antérieur corresponds to the
English future perfect tense. We use the
futur antérieur to talk about a future action
that will have happened by a certain time in
the future. This tense also expresses
predictions or suppositions about what
may have happened in the past. We form
the futur antérieur using the futur simple
form of avoir or être as an auxiliary,
followed by the passé participe (past
participle) of the main verb.
