CHAPTER 1

Background of the study

Social Media is a group of Internet-based applications that build on the

ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation

and exchange of User Generated Content. The concept of Social Media is top of

the agenda for many business executives today. Kaplan & Haenlein,2010). The

advances today in the information world, specifically with the advent of social

media and new media, may prove as profound as of these inventions.

(Mayfield,n.d.).

Hence, social media connects people to each other. By the use of

internet, they can share thoughts, ideas, information, etc. that can help in

everyday walk of life. In this fast-moving environment there is growing evidence

that smaller businesses can gain business value from the use of social media for

internal and external purposes (Geho et al. 2010). Social media marketing is a

new trend and rapidly growing way in which businesses are reaching out to

targeted customers easily. Social media marketing can be simply defined as the

use of social media channels to promote a company and its products. This kind

of marketing can be thought of as a subset of online marketing activities that

complete traditional Web-based promotion strategies, such as e-mail newsletters

and online advertising campaigns. (Barefoot & Szabo 2010).

As mentioned, social media had a great contribution to the small

businesses and also to the corporation, or bigtime businesses. In terms of

promotion strategies, one of this is online selling that had been popular especially
when the pandemic crisis appeared. Until now many consumers using it to buy

their wants and needs using different online selling platforms. As mentioned,

social media had a great contribution to the small businesses and also to the

corporation, or bigtime businesses. In terms of promotion strategies, one of this is

online selling that had been popular especially when the pandemic crisis

appeared. Until now many customers/consumers using it to buy their wants and

needs using different online selling platforms. In this millennium, the internet

could use for storage of information, global education, online interaction and

collaborative learning. It improves the interest in learning and communication

without boundaries also in research, information catalogues and innovation in the

new world (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010). Professors are expanding their social

media usage to host live lectures, offer off hours support for students or even

host students debate. It helps the Educators to be connected to their students off

campus. They use social media as their way of teaching by creating groups and

accounts for their students in order to access the information. Teachers are

turning to social media for a range of education-focused resources and networks

to collaborate when and with whom they want. (Prestridge,2019). For students,

social media tools improved the student’s learning opportunities, allowing

communication outsides the school campus/classroom and it’s enhancing the

creativity of every students. They can watch educational relevant videos and

also, they can extend the traditional educational settings and institutions.

(Sivakumar, 2020). This social media has grown that almost of the people

adapted it using social media platforms for their every flow of life. (Sun & Zhang,

2021).
According to Khan (2009), Facebook users experiencing a poor

academically performance, likely Englander et al., (2010), cited that social media

have a great negative impact in the academic performance of students and lot

more momentous than its advantages. Jacobsen and Fortste (2011), erect a

negative relationship between the utilization of varied media including mobile

phones, and self-reported GPA among first year students. Therefore, this reason

why many students getting failed in academic performances, this is the result of

spending more time in social media than their studies. This research targets

students for being aware of their academic performances than aware to the

social media that hinder to their potentials.

The researchers conducting this research to explore and to remind students

about the advantages and especially the bad, negative effects, or the

disadvantages of social media not only in the academic performances but also

for the daily walk of life of being a student.
