Thesis Statement & Topic sentence

Communication English (MPU 2212)

Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1) identify thesis statement.

2) identify topic sentence.
3) differentiate topic sentence and supporting details.
4) write thesis statement and topic sentence according to
the topic given.
Drafting an essay
 Start with a thesis statement /research question/statement of
intent. Make sure you answer your question or do what you
say you set out to do. Do not wander from your topic.

 Provide evidence to back up what you are saying. Support

your arguments with facts and reasoning. Do not simply list
facts, incorporate these as examples supporting your
position, but at the same time make your point as succinctly
as possible.

 The essay should clear. Make your point and conclude your
essay. Don’t make too much repetition and over-stating your
case will score points with your readers.
What is Thesis Statement?
 Thesis statement is the one sentence in your essay that
conveys the central idea that tells your reader what your
entire essay is about.

 It is the ONE sentence in your essay that addresses your topic

directly and general main points of the entire essay.

 These points are listed according to the sequence in which

they are discussed in the essay. Each of this point must be
expanded into a paragraph.

 Location: Introduction paragraph.

Example
 Differentiate the topic and main points in the thesis
statements below.

 1. Living in the city has certain advantages over living in the

suburbs.

 2. Stress in the fast-food workplace has led to serious

physical, psychological and emotional problems for
employees.

 3. Our cafeteria would be greatly improved if several changes

were made.
What is Topic Sentence?
 Topic sentence is ONE sentence that captures the meaning
of the entire paragraph. It tells what the passage is mainly
about.
 All the other sentences in the paragraph must be an
expansion of the topic sentence.

 For example, the first topic sentence will support the first
point in the thesis statement. The details and evidence in this
paragraph should be supporting the first topic sentence.

 Location: EVERY body paragraph.

Supporting Details
 Supporting details are the further elaboration or
explanation that support the topic sentence.

 Supporting details can be in the form of:

- reasons
- definition
- examples
- quotations
- statistics
- experience
