Insulation resistance
Insulation resistance

The insulation resistance is the resistance which is measured at an

electric equipment between a phase connection (L1, L2 or L3) and
the protective earth conductor (PE).

The equipment is disconnected from the mains during transport.

The main switch is in ON position.

According to EN 60204, the insulation resistance must be ≥ 1 MΩ.

TRUMPF laser devices can have an insulation resistance < 1 MΩ

when they are delivered. However it is ensured for these laser
devices that the admissible touch voltage is not exceeded in any
case.

Different types of laser devices are listed in the table on the next
page. Among them there are several ones that can have an
insulation resistance < 1 MΩ due to their type of construction. The
table indicates the minimum measuring value which is admissible
for these types. A laser device can be registered with the mark "All
right", if this value is not undershot.

Regular check If you find out during the regular check of the electrical equipment
that a TRUMPF laser device has an insulation resistance < 1 MΩ,
proceed as follows:

1. Look for the minimal insulation resistance admissible for the

laser device in Tab. 1, page 4.
2. If the measured value is higher than the table value, register
and mark the laser device with "All right".
3. If the measured value is lower than the table value, eliminate
the cause for the lower value and repeat the measurement.
One reason might be that a technical modification that
influences the insulation resistance was carried out at the laser
device after delivery.
4. If you cannot find the cause or cannot elimnate it, contact the
TRUMPF service department to agree upon the further
proceeding.
The contact data (phone No. etc) of the service are to be found
in the operator's manual of the laser device.

instructions for the replacement of parts. These works must
only be carried out by trained persons.

1-3
1.7 Hints to special kinds of dangers

1.7.1 Laser radiation

Nd:YAG lasers for the industrial material processing generate an

intensive light in the invisible, near infrared spectral region. This
light may endanger eyes and skin.

The most important protection measures for the handling with laser
radiation are defined in the standard EN 60825 "Radiation safety of
laser products", that is present as international harmonized
standard IEC 825 .

An important aspect of the regulations is the classification of laser

equipment into certain laser product classes, dependant on the
hazards by the accessible laser radiation. The units and/or devices
of HAAS-LASER are usually assigned to one of the two following
classes of laser products:

Class 1: Class 1 means that the laser device does not show any danger
regarding laser radiation in normal operation. This is normally
reached by suitable shielding covers. For service and maintenance
work, e.g. if the flash lamp has to be replaced, the shielding covers
must be screwed off. Laser and optical system become accessible.
In this case the laser device will get class 4.

Class 4: Class 4 means, that the radiation is dangerous for eyes and skin
and that appropriate safety steps must be taken, above all a
sufficient eye protection by means of special antilaser goggles.

Your unit and/or the device is marked corresponding to the

occurring laser product classes. The following picture shows an
example marking for a unit of the class 4.

INVISIBLE LASER BEAMS

AVOID EXPOSURE TO DIRECT

RADIATON OR STRY RADIATION
TO THE EYES AND SKIN

LASER CLASS 4

WH-00015.ENG

1-4
♦ You have to announce the operation of laser units of class 4 to
the professional association and to the authority (industrial
inspection board) responsible for the industrial safety .

♦ Furthermore you have to order in writing experts as laser

safety officers when operating laser units of these classes.
Maintenance also belongs to the operation.

The following documentation is enclosed to this manual:

♦ Additional laser warning labels

1-5
1.7.2 Electric energy

♦ Use only original fuses with the specified characteristics and

current rating. Switch off the unit and/or the device if trouble
occurs in the electrical system.

♦ Check the electrical equipment of the unit and/or the device at

regular intervals. Defects, e.g. loose connections or defective
cables must be eliminated immediately.

♦ Any work on the electrical equipment must be carried out only

by an electrical craftsman or by persons, instructed in this and
conducted by an electrical craftsman, according to the
electrotechnical rules.

♦ The discharge time of electrical capacitor banks may be more

than 1 minute..

1.7.3 Gas- and particle emission

The effect of the laser radiation may cause gases and dust, that
are harmful to health.

♦ As user you have to take suitable safety measures, e.g. by an

appropriate exhauster system. For this keep the existing
national instructions.

♦ Check the effect of the safety measures at regular intervals.

Defects must be eliminated immediately !

1-6
1.8 Standards and Instructions

Following some important standards and instructions are listed,

that should be observed when operating a laser unit. This list is
nothing but only for information. The manufacturer does not
assume any responsibility for the completeness of this list.

2 Introduction

Chapter 2 is an introducing chapter, that makes you familiar with

the laser-specific terms and basic rules. Starting with the
components, necessary for the design of a laser unit, the laser
parameters are explained, subassemblies for the beam guidance
are introduced and simple calculation rules are given, that enables
you to understand the laser conditions at the workpiece.

2.1 Design of a laser unit

A laser unit is composed of the laser device with laser and supply,
the optical components for the beam guidance and the facilities for
the movement and the handling of the workpiece.

2.2 The laser

A Laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation),

in which a laser beam suitable for the material processing is
generated, consists of the following components:

Cavity with laser rod (Nd:YAG)

excitation lamps
reflector

and

Resonator with end mirror

output coupling mirror

2-1
Design of a
solid-state laser

JK-00001.ENG

The laser light is generated in the laser rod. The laser rod is a
crystal (YAG: Yttrium-Aluminium-Garnet), doped with neodymium
(Nd).

To generate the laser light the laser rod has to be excited. This
takes place by means of excitation lamps. Their light is reflected
into the laser rod via reflectors. The laser rod now starts for its part
to send out light. To become a laser beam, this light must be sent
again and again through the laser rod by reflection on both mirrors
of the resonator. This amplifies the light and it gets the
characteristic of a good parallelism, which makes it valuable for the
material processing. The laser beam leaves the laser through the
semi-reflecting mirror, is guided through beam guiding optics and
then focused on the workpiece.

2.3 The supply

To operate a laser, it must be supplied with electric energy and

cooling water in a suitable manner. There must be an electronic
control and monitoring of the proper, designated process of the
function of the laser. These tasks are taken over by the so-called
"supply".

The essential functions of the supply are shortly described below.

The supply feeds the excitation lamps of the laser with the
electrical power, given by the control. The medium electrical power
is taken from the three-phase network and transformed suitably.

2-2
The supply controls and monitors all internal functions, contains
the operating unit and the electronic interfaces to external control
systems (CNC, PLC) and controls the activation of beam guiding
components and wattmeters.

The supply also contains the monitoring circuits, necessary for a

safe operation.

The laser aggregate, belonging to the supply, dissipates the waste

heat, arising in the laser, to an external cooling water circuit and
the temperature of the laser is regulated to a constant value.

2.4 Laser parameter

Divergence (###)

The light generated in the laser emerges as an almost parallel

beam, contrary to other light sources. The slight deviation from
parallelism is named divergence and indicates, together with the
beam diameter, the beam quality of the laser. A small divergence
is an essential condition for a good beam quality.

Beam diameter (do)

The beam diameter indicates the diameter of the laser beam when
emerged from the laser.

Divergence and
beam diameter

2-3
Power (P)

A decisive parameter of the laser is its power. In case of cw-lasers

the light continuously emerges, power P is constant. In case of
pulsed lasers P marks the pulse power. Normally several kilowatt.

Pulse duration (###H)

The pulse duration determines the time for pulsed lasers, during
which the power P is released.

Pulse energy (Q)

The pulse energy is the product of power and pulse duration :

Q = P . ###H

Pulse repetition rate (fp)

The pulse repetition rate determines the number of laser pulses

per second.

Average power (Pav)

The average power of pulse lasers is the product of pulse power,

pulse duration and pulse repetition rate and is named Pav :
Pav = P . ###H . fp

laser parameters

JK-00002.ENG

2-4
2.5 Beam guidance

Optical components out of glass can be used for the beam

guidance because of the wave length of the solid-state laser in the
near infrared region. Dependant on their function these
components have totally or partly reflecting dielectric layers. Beam
guiding components are:

♦ Mirror for the beam deflection

♦ Time sharing to switch the beam guiding to several

working stations

♦ Power sharing to share the laser power for simultaneous

processing

♦ Focusing optics to set up the workpiece and to observe

the laser processing

♦ Energy and power meter to control the laser beam

♦ Laser light cable (LLK) for a flexible beam guidance and

to bridge large distances between laser and working
stations

The LLK for the transmission of the beam power makes the laser a
highly flexible tool.

To enable a laser power transmission with the LLK a coupling

optics, the LLK with one plug at both ends and the focusing optics
are required.

To transmit light with the LLK the laser beam has to be focused to
the polished end of the optical fibre. The focal diameter of the
coupling optics must not exceed the core diameter of the optical
fibre:

dof < dk

dof: Focal diameter

dk : Core diameter of the optical fibre

2-5
If this condition is not met, an increased power loss arises and the
optical fibre will be destroyed in case of high average beam power.

Beam guidance with LLK

JK-00003.ENG

When focusing the laser beam it must be guaranteed by selection

of the coupling focal length, that the spot is smaller than the core
diameter of the optical fibre and that the divergence is smaller than
the critical angle of total reflection.

The critical angle of total reflection can be exceeded, also in case

of a strong bending of the LLK, below the critical bending radius.
This will lead to a light exit and to the destruction of the LLK.

To avoid this, modern LLK have a bending radius limit and

moreover a safety device that switches off the laser as soon as
laser light emerges out of the coating.

With a beam guidance via LLK, losses of max. 10 % only occur

when coupling and coupling out.

Coupling losses (< 3 dB/km) in the LLK become only noticeable

with a length of the LLK in the kilometre range.

With measuring components, integrated in the beam guidance ,

laser power and laser energy can be controlled. The received
measuring signal can be used also to control the laser.

2-6
2.6 Focusing of the laser beam

For the material processing the laser beam must be focused to a

power density (peak power of the pulse / radiation area) of at least
10 kW/cm2. For this a lens (convex lens) is used. The size of the
focal point only depends on the laser divergence θ and the focal
length of the lens f.

With a beam guidance via a LLK the laser light first emerges
divergent from the end of the LLK, is then collimated again through
a collimator lens and focused to the workpiece with the following
lens.

It is: dof = f.θ

dof: Focal diameter [mm]

θ: Divergence [rad]
f: Focal length of the lens [mm]

The length of the optical axes in the focus, on which the focal
diameter dof changes only in a negligible way, is called depth of
focus. It can be expressed by means of the Rayleigh length zR.

f² . θ
It is: zR = _____
do

zR: Rayleigh-Length [mm]

f: Focal length of the lens [mm]
θ: Divergence [rad]
do: Beam diameter [mm]

Focusing of the
Laser beam

As the product of divergence and beam diameter θ . do is constant

in an optical reproduction, that means also when the laser beam is

2-7
focused, by magnification of the beam diameter (the divergence
becomes smaller in a corresponding way) a reduction of the focal
diameter and thus a higher power density can be achieved. But the
depth of focus will be decreased. The enlargement of the laser
beam is performed by a lens system consisting of a convex lens
and a divergent lens. The expansion factor F is:

f+
F = __
f-

f+: Focal length of the convex lens

f-: Focal length of the divergent lens

F indicates the change factor of the focal diameter and F² the

change factor of the depth of focus.

Influence of an enlargement
optics on the focusing of
the laser beam

Light for the observation and adjustment of the workpiece is

reflected by this workpiece and coupled out between lens and
enlargement optics.

2-8
With a beam guidance via LLK the laser light emerges divergent
from the end of the LLK, is then collimated again by a collimator
lens and focused on the workpiece by the following focusing lens

f
It is: dof = ___ . dk
fc

dof: Focal diameter

f: Focal length of the focusing lens
fc: Focal length of the collimator
dk: Core diameter of the LLK

2.7 Movement and Handling

The compact construction of the solid-state laser and the usage of

the laser light cable enable not only its user in automatic machines,
but also its integration into special laser units.

Movement and handling are carried out manually by the operator.

The welding point is located and observed via of a stereo
microscope . Laser with a lower power are used for manual
working places.

Complex units have a multi-axes moving system with CNC control.

This allows the workpiece as well as the laser or the focusing
optics to move, so that a three-dimensional processing is possible.

The laser device can be connected with the CNC control by special
interfaces. By integration of image-processing, CAD or data
management the laser unit becomes an efficient processing
machine, easy to operate.

A radiation-proof unit case (radiation protection) and an exhauster

(particle protection) guarantee the safety of the operator

4 Laser and optics

The laser with the optical arrangement is installed in the laser unit
together with the supply of the laser. From there the laser light is
guided via the laser light cable (LLK) and the focusing optics to the
workpiece.

The laser and the optical components, necessary for the beam
guidance, are described in this chapter.

A general description of the operation mode of the laser and the

optical components is in chapter 2 "Introduction". Notes regarding
the operation and maintenance can be found in chapter 8 and 9.

4-1
4.1 Laser light cable LLK - B

The laser light cable LLK-B is a flexible transmission medium and

enables the spatial separation of laser and working station(s) over
a long distance. It is suitable for the rough industrial application
and is distinguished by low transmission losses.

Mode of operation

The laser light is guided from the laser to the working optics via a
fibre. In spite of high flexibility, the protective steel coating offers a
mechanical limit of the bending radius. This guarantees a simple
laying of the laser light cable. Even the correct connection of the

LLK-plug (2) at the laser and the processing optics is checked.

This is realized via a safety control, integrated in the laser light
cable and which is connected to the safety circuit by a circular plug
(1). If malfunctions occur in the laser light cable or if the LLK-plug
(2) is disconnected, the laser device switches off immediately.

4-2

4-3
5 Supply

The supply contains the units, necessary for the operation of the
laser. The laser with the optical arrangement, described in
chapter 4 and the supply, are named together as laser device.

Following the essential functional elements of the supply are

described:

The mains distribution distributes the mains voltage to the

individual consumers of the power supply. It also contains the
"EMERGENCY OFF" disconnection of the laser device.

Die laser control controls and monitors the total laser device. The
internal functions, the control of the operating panel, the interfaces,
the driving of the optical components (beam switches, shutter) as
well as the measurement and monitoring of the laser power and/or
the laser energy belong to this.

The lamp power supply delivers current for the excitation lamps
of the laser. For this the medium electric power is taken from the
delivering network and transformed adequately by means of
electronical convertors. These convertors consist of charging part,
capacitor bank, convertor and ignition booster control.

The laser cooling dissipates the waste heat, arising in the laser, to
an external cooling water circuit. The temperature of the laser
cooling circuit is thereby regulated to a constant value,
independent of the external connection conditions.

The functional elements of the supply are described in this chapter.

The operation of the laser device and its components is described
in chapter 8, the maintenance of them in chapter 9.

5-1
5.1 Laser device

The laser device consists of the above described functional

elements. Only the operating panel as part of the laser control, is
seperated of the laser device, e.g. arranged directly at the
processing place or directly integrated into a working place. They
are described either in the main section 5.2 or in chapter 6
"Integration into a working place".

5.1.1 Design

The design of the laser device can be seen in the following picture.

3 X2
LEM X5

X3 X4 7

The functional elements of the supply as well as the laser with the
optical arrangement (4) are fitted into a cabinet. This cabinet is
designed in accordance to the international protection IP 54 and
equipped with rollers, which may be locked.

The shield (1) at the front side contains the combined main- and
EMERGENCY-OFF switch with the displays. After opening the
front door you have access to the mains distribution (2) with the
fuses.

The connections are on the rear side (7) of the device. The rear
wall can be removed, so that all components of the supply are
easily accessible for maintenance and service work.

5-2
All essential functional elements of the supply are shortly described
below.

Mains distribution (2)

The mains distribution contains all fuses, the required contactors

and relays, auxiliary supplies as 24V-power supply and control
transformer, a service socket as well as terminals and connectors.
All subassemblies are arranged on a mounting plate, which is
directly accessible after opening the front door.

Cabinet cooling (3)

The cabinet cooling is located between the mains distribution and

the lamp power supply and dissipates the waste heat, arising in the
electronics, through a heat exchanger to the external cooling
circuit. Thus the temperature in the cabinet is always constant,
independent from the ambient temperature at the installation site.

Lamp power supply (5) and (5a)

All subassemblies of the lamp power supply, except the charging

part (5a) are installed in a casing (5). The control-, regulating and
monitoring circuits of the lamp power supply are arranged in such a
way that they are accessible for service work after removal of the
rear wall.

The charging part (5a) consists of a motherboard with the

corresponding heat sink, and is inserted above the laser
cooling (6).

Laser cooling(6)

The laser cooling is installed on a mounting frame, that is inserted

in the cabinet. All components important for maintenance work (ion
filter, particle- and contamination filter) are directly accessible after
removing the rear wall.

The laser is cooled with deionized water. It is taken in from the

tank, pumped through the cavity to be cooled and returns via the
heat exchanger into the tank. All required functions are
electronically controlled and monitored.

5-3
5.1.2 Operating elements and indicators

All operating elements and indicators are listed and described

below. The operating elements and indicators of the operating
panel (working place and/or remote control) are explained
separately. All operating processes are described more detailed in
chapter 8 "Operating".

1

Laser warning lamps (1)

The warning lamps indicate that a laser pulse may be released.

The capacitor bank in the laser device is charged.

Mains(2)

This indicator lamp signals that the laser device is switched on and
that all required components are live.

Main switch /Emergency-off switch (3)

With this switch the complete laser device, except the service
socket, can be disconnected all-polo from the mains for
maintenance work. Furthermore the laser device can be stopped
with this switch in case of emergency, if there is a risk for persons
or damages at the unit.

5-4
5.1.3 Interfaces

The different interfaces are for the control, acknowledgement and

supply of the laser device. They are located at the laser device
itself as well as at the operating unit and/or the working place.

Only the interfaces directly at the laser device are shortly described
below. The interfaces at the operating unit and/or at the working
place are described in the main section 5.2 and/or in chapter 6. A
detailed description with pin assignment and exact function
description is contained in the separate manual "Interface
description".

All connections of the laser device are at the rear of the so-called
rear front plate. One part of these connections is assigned firmly
for the connection to the operating unit or to the working place.

8.2 Set the laser parameters and shielding
gas

The laser parameters required for the welding are shown in the
parameter set menu. After switching on the laser device this
parameter set menu appears after approx. 6 seconds.

The parameter set contains the adjustment values relevant for the
laser processing. The individual parameters have the following
meaning:

+ Focus (option)

The parameter "+ Focus" indicates the diameter of the laser beam
on the workpiece (observation sharp) in mm. The parameter only
appears if your unit contains a motor-driven defocusing.

With it you can determine the dimension of the weld point. The
setting range is between 0.3 and 2.0 mm. The sign (+ or -)
indicates whether the focal point is before the focused observation
level (sign +) or behind this level (sign -).

WH-00001.ENG
Power

The power of the laser pulse is set with the parameter "power" (see
chapter 2). The setting range is between 0.5 and 5 kW.

P.Duration

The parameter "P.duration" indicates the duration of the laser

pulse in ms. The setting range is between 0.5 and 20 ms, in the
following steps:

Pulse duration Steps

0.5 - 2.0 ms 0.1 ms

2.0 - 10.0 ms 0.2 ms

10.0 - 20.0 ms 0.5 ms

8-3
Pulse number

With the parameter "Pulse number" the number of pluses, released

after triggering of the laser by the pulse foot switch or the key
START/STOP, can be set.

There are the following setting possibilities:

"Pulse number" = 1 for "Single pulse mode"

"Pulse number" = x for "Multi pulse mode" (2 .. x .. 9999)

"Pulse number" = ∞ for "Continuous pulse mode"

Frequency

The set frequency indicates how many laser pulses per second are
triggered in the "multi pulse or continuous pulse mode". This value
is only relevant if "pulse number" = >1 is set.

The frequency can be set in the range from 0.1 to 100 Hz.

Shielding gas

The function "Shielding gas" indicates how the gas valve is

activated. The shielding gas valve can be conntected to the
interface 54P. There are the adjustment possibilities "Foot", "On"
and "Off" (for more details see 8.2.2).

Energy / Power av

The control calculates the energy of the laser pulse and the mean
laser power from the set parameters "Power", "P.Duration" and
"Frequency". These calculated values are displayed in the
parameter set menu as "Energy" and "Power av".

The general context can be found in chapter 2 "Introduction". The

average power, possible with the laser device HL 54 P can be
found in chapter 3.

8-4
8.2.1 Set laser parameters

Notice The parameter set menu must be displayed so that you can set the
laser parameters. The parameters "+ Focus", "Power" and
"P.Duration" can be changed at the operating panel or with the
parameter foot switch. The parameters "Pulse number" and
"Frequency" can be set only at the operating panel.

"Energy" and "Power av" are calculated values.

Please proceed as follows to set the laser parameters:

♦ Select the parameter line by means of the cursor keys↑, ↓ at

the operating panel or at the foot switch.

The current line is shown inverse.

♦ Press the keys + or - at the operation panel or at the foot

switch until the desired value appears.

The longer you press the key at the operating panel or the foot
WH-00001.ENG
switch, the faster the value is changed.

The values of the parameters "Power", "P.Duration", "Pulse

number" and "Frequency" are immediately updated with the
modification. Simultaneously to the setting of the laser parameters
the energy is calculated and shown in the display.

Notice If you exceed the maximum energy when setting the value, the
displayed value of the "Energy" flashes. No pulse can be released.

♦ If the energy value flashes, reduce the power or the pulse

duration until flashing stops.

Notice If "Pulse number" = >1 is set the mean power will be calculated. If
the limit of the mean power is exceeded, the value "Power av"
flashes in the display. No pulse can be released.

♦ If the power value flashes, reduce the "Frequency", the

"Power" or the "P.Duration" until flashing stops.

Please note that the maximum mean power is not reached for all
possible parameter configurations.

The value of "+ Focus" is set directly at the focusing optics. This
adjustment process takes place only 0.5 seconds after modification
of the value. A laser pulse release is only possible after this time.

8-5
8.2.2 Set shielding gas functions

You can set the switching function of the gas valve in the
parameter set menu. The following settings are possible:

"Foot" When you actuate the pedal of the foot switch to

position (2) and further, the gas valve is switched
on.

"On" The gas valve is switched on permanently.

follows.

♦ Select the line "shielding gas" with the cursor keys ↑ or ↓ at the
operating panel.

♦ Press the keys + or - at the operating panel until the desired

setting appears.

8-6
8.2.3 Store the parameter set

You can store and call-up the set parameters as a parameter set
for e.g. a certain welding. So the programming of individual
parameters is not necessary. Up to 25 parameter sets can be
stored.

To store a parameter set please proceed as follows:

♦ Select the parameter set number (first line) with the cursor
keys ↑, ↓ at the operating panel or at the foot switch.

The parameter set number is displayed inverse.

♦ Press the keys + or - at the operating panel or at the foot

switch until the desired number appears.

♦ Set the desired parameters, as described above.

♦ Press the ENTER key to store the parameter set under the
adjusted number.

Notice If you want to save your time you can first copy the parameter sets
(see 8.5.3) and then perform the modifications.

To call up a stored parameter set, the parameter set menu must be

displayed. Proceed as follows:

♦ Select the parameter set number (first line) with the cursor
keys ↑, ↓ at the operating panel or at the foot switch.

The parameter set number is displayed inverse. The

parameters stored under this number are displayed and are
active from now on.

8-7
8.3 Activate the laser

First switch on the laser, so that laser pulses can be released. You
may perform this at the operating panel or control it via the I/O
interface.

Notice If you activate the laser via the I/O interface, the key LASER on the
operating panel is locked. In case of a locked operating panel the
symbol "*" appears on the display after the parameter set number.
However the LED of the key LASER still indicates the status. More
details about the activation can be found in the individual interface
description.

The laser can be switched on and off at the operating panel as

follows:

8.3.1 Switch on the laser

♦ Press the LASER key at the operating panel.

The LED of the LASER key flashes until the power supply for
the lamp is switched on and the flash lamp of the laser is
ignited. When this process is finished and the laser is ready for
pulsing, this LED lights permanently. At the same time the
laser warning lamps at the laser device and at the working
place are lighting.

8.3.2 Switch off the laser

You can switch off the laser at any time during the operation.
Proceed as follows:

♦ Press the LASER key at the operating panel

The LED of the LASER key goes off. The power supply of the
excitation lamp of the laser is switched off. After approx. one
minute (discharging of the capacitor bank) the laser warning
lamps at the laser device and at the working place will go off.

8-8
8.4 Release laser pulses

You can release the laser pulse either with the foot switch, at the
operating panel or via the interface 54P. How to block individual
release points can be found in the subsection "Selection of the
pulse release".

If the laser is activated via the I/O interface the START/STOP key
at the operating panel and the foot switch are locked. In case of a
locked operating panel the symbol "*" appears on the display after
the parameter set number. The LED of the key START/STOP still
indicates the status. More details about the activation can be found
in the individual interface descriptions.

Notice For the focusing optics with observation through a stereo

microscope a flap is swivelled in front of the observation optics
during the pulse release, to protect the eyes of the observer
against a disagreable dazzaling by the welding flare. This so-called
antidazzle protection is closed by the laser control during the pulse
release (more details can be found under 8.5.7 Settings ff).
Regardless of the function of this antidazzle protection the eyes of
the observer are protected against laser radiation by a built-in laser
protective filter.

The laser must be switched on, so that laser pulses can be

released, that means the LED of the key LASER must light.

8.4.1 Release the laser pulse with the foot switch

Depending on whether "Pulse number"= 1 , "Pulse number" ="x" or

"Pulse number" = ∞ is set, you can release one laser pulse, "x"
laser pulses or continuous laser pulses with the selected
frequency.

♦ Press the pedal of the pulse foot switch to position (2).

The shutter circuit is closed and the shutter of the laser is

opened. If you have selected "foot" for the shielding gas
supply, the shielding gas valve will be opened too.

8-9
♦ Press the pedal of the pulse foot switch further on to
position (3).

If you have set "Pulse number" = 1 , one laser pulse is

released. If you have set "Pulse number" = "x" "x" laser pulses
are released with the set frequency. If you have set "Pulse
number" = ∞, laser pulses will be released with the set
frequency as long as the foot switch is in position (3).

If you release laser pulses too fast one after the other (mean
power of the laser device will be exceeded) the message
"power limit" appears on the display. In this case the pulse
release is not performed.

Notice If you work with shielding gas, you should wait with the release of
the laser pulses until the shielding gas streams around the
workpiece.

8.4.2 Release laser pulses at the operating panel

Depending on whether you have set "Pulse number" = 1, "Pulse

number" = "x" or "Pulse number" = ∞, one laser pulse, "x" laser
pulses or continuous laser pulses with the selected frequency can
be started or stopped.

♦ Shortly press the START/STOP key at the operating panel.

If you have set "Pulse number" = 1, one laser pulse is

released. If "Pulse number" = "x is set, "x" laser pulses with the
set frequency are released. If "Pulse number" = ∞ is set, laser
pulses are released with the set frequency until the
START/STOP key is pressed once again. The LED of the
START/STOP key shortly flashes up and/or lights permanently.

If you release laser pulses too fast one after the other (mean
power of the laser device is exceeded) the message "power
limit" appears on the display. In this case the pulse release is
not performed.

8-10
8.4.3 Release laser pulses via the interface

In order to relase laser pulses via the interface 54P, the operating
unit must be locked via an input of the parallel interface. No laser
pulses can then be released at the foot switch or the operating
panel. The LED of the key START/STOP still indicates the status.

More details about the activation of the I/O interface can be found
in the separate interface description.

The "Pulse counter PSU" counts all laser pulses which have been
released at the laser device since delivery of the device. This value
is useful for the service and cannot be reset.

8.5.5 Change the lamp factor

The lamp factor serves as correction of the flash lamp ageing. Due
to the inevitable ageing of the flash lamp the power of the laser is
decreased. You can compensate this power decrease by means of
the lamp factor. A power reserve of 15 % is available for this.

At delivery the lamp factor is set to the value 1.00.

WH-00004.ENG

8-14
If the power went off you must increase the lamp factor as follows:

8.6 What to do in case of warning messages
and error messages

The control permanently controls the correct function of the laser

unit. When a malfunction is detected, the control generates -
dependent on the importance of the malfunction - either a warning
message or an error message and shows it on the display.

A warning message indicates that e.g. a value exceeded the

normal working range, but the permissible limit value has not yet
been reached. The device does not switch off and you can keep on
working without any restrictions. Nevertheless you should follow
the note to prevent a possibly following error message.

If an error message appears, a malfunction has been detected or a

limit value has been exceeded. The laser device automatically
switches off.

If a warning message or an error message occurs, the LED of the

RESET key flashes and a message text appears on the display. At
the same time the output signals MONITORING or ERROR at the
I/O interface are activated (see interface description).

The first line shows you whether it is a "warning message" or an

"error message" and whether the operating unit "BDE" or the laser
device "PSU" is the cause for this message.

WH-00009.ENG The code of the message is shown in the second line. The last 10
codes are stored in the "message stack".

Line three indicates the effect of the message in clear. In the fourth
line a note how to remedy the cause of the message appears, if
necessary.

8-20
After having eliminated the cause of a malfunction or if you want to
delete the displayed text of a warning message, please proceed as
follows:

♦ Press the RESET key at the operating panel.

The message is deleted and you return to the parameter set

menu. The LED of the RESET stops flashing.

If the cause of the malfunction is not eliminated, a message will

be generated again.

Notice If you cannot eliminate the error, please contact our service
department. The addresses and telephone numbers are listed at
the end of this manual. For a quick help, please write down the last
10 messages before contacting the service department. You will
find them in the submenu "message stack" (8.5.8).

8.7 Call up the diagnosis menu

Via the diagnosis menu input / output functions, e.g. foot switch
functions, can be tested and measured values of the laser device
can be indicated. This menu is intended for service purposes and
therefore not selectable in normal operation.

More details regarding the diagnosis menu can be found in the

"error messages". If you enter the diagnosis menu by mistake you
have to switch off the laser device at the operating panel and then
to switch on again.

8-21
9 Maintenance

9.1 General note

Your laser arrangement is designed in such a way that only little

maintenance is required. All important parts are electronically
controlled. If maintenance is required, you will get a message.

How the maintenance should be performed is described above.

Danger When performing maintenance work the corresponding safety

regulations (see chapter 1) must be observed by all means. Pay
special attention to the following points.

Before starting the maintenance work at parts of the devices and/or

the unit, the following five safety rules must be kept - if prescribed:

clothes and clean solvent as e.g. isopropanol.

9-3
9.3.1 Laser

Replacement of the flash lamp

Danger The lamp must be replaced only by trained persons.

♦ Switch off the laser device and secure the main switch against
switching-on during the replacement of the lamp.

♦ Check that the device is dead. Discharging time can be up to

one minute.

♦ Open the cover of the laser device by turning the four caps
counter-clockwise for a quarter turn. Remove the cover.

♦ Loosen the two knurled screws(1), sealing the lamp, by 2

turns.

♦ Remove the two upper cap plugs (2) at the lamp connections
manually and screw out the two screws (3) below.

♦ Now pull the lamp out of the cavity.

Note If the lamp is broken into pieces the glass splinters must be
removed completely. You may carefully blow off the glass
splinters with cleaned compressed air, if necessary.

9-4
Attention The red connection cable must point to the red marked lamp
connection.

♦ Insert a new lamp.

♦ Fasten the lamp with the two screws (3) and put on the cap
plugs (2).

♦ Screw down the two knurled screws (1) by hand, so that the
cooling circuit of the laser becomes tight again. Remove
possible water drops with a soft, absorbent cloth.

♦ Put the cover on the laser device and close the four caps.

Switch on the laser device. Switch it off again after approx. 5

minutes and secure the main switch against switching-on again.
Check that the device is dead. Discharging time can be up to one
minute. Open the cover of the laser device and check the tightness
at the lamp. If water has emerged the knurled screws (1) must be
tightened faster.

♦ Put the cover on the laser device and close the four caps.

The laser is ready now. Carry out the following steps, so that you
have an idea about the age of the flash lamp.

♦ Switch on the laser device.

♦ Reset the "Pulse counter lamp" to zero and reset the "Lamp
factor" to the value 1.00 (see chapter 8).

9-5
9.4 Maintenance work at the laser device

Caution Switch off the laser device before performing any maintenance
work.

Please pay attention to the general notes in section 9.1 and to the
safety notes in chapter 1.

9.4.1 Laser cooling

The laser cooling is accessible after removing the rear wall. The
following picture shows this view and gives you an idea about the
laser cooling.

6 5

7
3

The low conductivity of the deionized water in the cooling circuit is

maintained by means of the ion filter (7). A message is indicated by
the control of the laser device if the ion filter has to be replaced.

To achieve a trouble-free operation you should further clean and

check the following parts at regular intervals:
• Dirt pans in the supply hose of the external cooling circuit (3)

• Particle filter in the return hose from the laser (5)

• Fine filter in the exhauster hose of the pump (8)

For some work concerning the laser cooling circuit (D-I-water), first
you have to empty the laser cooling after removal of the rear wall.
You also have to empty the laser cooling before changing the site
in case of cold atmospheric conditions (risk of freeze in!) or if the
laser device will be stopped for a longer period (several weeks).

9-6
Emptying the cooling

♦ Switch off the laser device and remove the rear wall and the
cover.

♦ Loosen the water connection directly at the laser (screwing) so

far that air can come in and the water may run back into the
tank.

♦ Open the stop valve of the vertically jammed hose with the
inscription "Outlet hose". Hang the hose into a vessel with
contents > 5 l. Take care that the outlet of the hose is beneath
the tank.

Fill / refill the cooling

♦ Ensure that the tank is clean and does not contain any
contamination.

♦ Take the hose with the inscription "Filling and outlet hose" and
fill in clean D-I-water with a funnel to the upper mark (6) at the
tank (approx. 5 l with a conductivity of < 5 µS) while the stop
valve is opened.

♦ Close the stop valve.

♦ Check whether the screwed connection directly at the laser is

tightened correctly.

Caution ♦ Switch on the laser with the main switch. Take care that no
other switch/key will be actuated except the main switch. Take
out the key at the operating panel.

♦ Open the front door.

X1 On the mains distribution you can see a motherboard

(subassembly A2). The picture on the left side shows the
S1
corresponding part.

♦ Now actuate key S1 to switch on the pump.

S1 S2 S3

♦ Keep the key S1 pressed until there is no more air in the hoses
to the laser.

Now the laser is ready, provided that the conductivity has the
correct value.

9-7
Conductivity If the conductivity of the filled-in water is above 15 µS but below
25 µS, a warning message is indicated when switching on the laser
device. If the ion filter is in good order, the conductivity will fall
below 15 µS within some minutes and the warning message can
be deleted.

If the conductivity is above 25 µS, you cannot operate the laser

device, because an error message is displayed immediately. In this
case, keep the laser device switched on (main switch "On" and
actuate the key switch at the operating panel). Press the RESET
key after some minutes. If the conductivity is now below 25 µS, the
laser device is ready, otherwise the error message occurs again.

Clean the dirt pan (3)

This dirt pan is in the external supply hose of the cooling water. It
protects the solenoid valves (4) in the laser cooling and must be
cleaned from time to time, according to the contamination of the
water.

♦ Switch off the laser device and remove the rear wall.

♦ Turn off the supply to the laser cooling.

If there is no more pressure on the drain line that's enough. If

there is still a pressure on the drain line (e.g. in case of a
recooling unit) the drain line must be turned off in any case, as
the solenoid valves only lock in one direction.

♦ Screw out the filter cartridge and clean it (blow off/wash out).

♦ Insert the filter cartridge and tighten it.

♦ Open the supply hose and the drain line, if necessary and
control the tightness of the filter cartridge

9-8
Clean the particle filter (5)

This particle filter is located in the return hose of the laser. It serves
to filter possible glass splinters of broken flash lamps out of the
water circuit. If the flow through the laser is too small, this particle
filter may be the cause.

♦ Switch off the laser device.

♦ Remove the left side wall and the cover.

♦ Open the screwed connection directly at the laser so far that

air may come in and let the D-I-water run back into the tank.

♦ Open the particle filter (5) and remove the inserted sieve.

♦ Clean this sieve and insert it again.

♦ Tighten the particle filter (5).

♦ Tighten the screwed connection at the laser.

♦ Switch on the laser device.

If the error message "Waterflow to the laser..." appears, please

press the RESET key. If there is no result after you have
pressed the RESET key several times, you have to switch on
the pump manually. See item "Fill the cooling".

Replace the ion filter (7)

Deionized (D-I) water with a conductivity of < 25 µ is used as

cooling medium for the laser. This conductivity is maintained by
means of a ion filter. If the conductivity exceeds the value of
approx. 15 µS, a warning message is generated. You should
replace the ion filter in one of the following standstill times of the
laser device, as the laser device switches off when the conductivity
reaches a value of approx. 25 µS.

♦ Switch off the laser device and remove the rear wall.

♦ Loosen the two hose clamps at the ion filter. Hold the hoses
above the connections that the connections will not be
damaged.

9-9
♦ Pull off the two hoses.

♦ Pull the ion filter out of its mounting fixture.

♦ Insert the new ion filter into the mounting fixture.

♦ Connect the new ion filter according to the marking (Outlet:

Centre of the ion filter ⇒ cap of tank).

♦ Tighten the two hose clamps. When tightening the hose

clamps take care that you hold them above the connections to
avoid that the connections of the ion filter will beak off.

The laser device is ready now.

Clean the fine filter (8)

This fine filter in the exhauster hose of the pump ensures that no
contamination will come into the laser.

♦ Empty the cooling as described under item "Emptying the

cooling".

♦ Open both connections (5) to the laser.

♦ Pull out the cooling for about one third and open the tank filler
cap.

♦ Loosen the spigot nut at the screwing (8) and take out the
sieve.

♦ Insert the sieve after cleaning.

♦ Close the tank and refill the cooling as described under "Filling
the cooling".

9-10
9.4.2 Mains distribution

All fuses are located in the mains distribution, which is accessible

after opening the front door of the laser device.

All fuses (except the protective switch for the charging part) are
equipped with an indicator. This indicator consists of a bulb which
lights in case of a defective fuse. This indicator only works if the
laser device is switched on.

Replacement of the fuses

Caution Replace the fuses only if the laser device is switched off.

♦ Open the front door while the laser device is switched on.

♦ Locate the defective fuse.

♦ Switch off the laser device.

♦ Pull off the upper part of the fuse clamp, and remove the
defective fuse.

♦ Replace the defective fuse by a fuse of the same type with the
same values for current and voltage.

♦ Close the front door.

The laser device is ready now.

9-11
10 Malfunctions and trouble-
