Lesson 1 3rd Q. Motions

The document describes key concepts related to motion including: 1) Motion refers to a continuous change in position over time relative to a reference point. An object at rest experiences no change in position. 2) Distance is the total path traveled between two points, while displacement is the straight-line distance between the initial and final position of an object. 3) Speed is the rate of change of distance over time. Velocity refers to speed with direction and can be calculated by dividing displacement by time. Acceleration describes the rate of change of velocity over time.

Describing

Motion
In terms of distance or displacement,
speed or velocity and acceleration
Is the motorcycle carrying foods in
motion?
Reference Point
● Starting point or the origin for measuring motion.
Motion
● Motion is a continuous change in position with respect to a
reference point for a particular time interval.
At Rest
the change in position for a particular
time interval
Two ways to find out how far did
the object travel.

by measuring the total length

of path travelled by the object
which is called the distance.

by measuring the distance

between the initial position and
final position of the object
which is called the
displacement.
Distance

. A dog grant 10 meters to the east then 5

meters to the south and another 10 meters
to the west.

25 meters
Distance

it is the total length of the entire path

that the object or person travelled in
moving from one place to another

dt= d1+d2+d3…
Displacement
● Displacement is the shortest distance between the objects initial and final positions.
We can find the displacement
mathematically by finding the

Displacement difference between the final and initial

position of an object.

VECTOR QUANTITY

● Specified by a magnitude and a direction

5m, west
Sample Problem: (DISTANCE)

Lerven drives his motor 200

meter from point A to point B,
then 50 meters point B to point
C, and another 200 meters
from point C to point D. What
is the distance?
Given:
A to B is 200 meters
B to C is 50 meters
C to D is 200 meters

Solution:

total distance= d1+ d2+ d3

total distance= 200 meters + 50 meters + 200 meters

total distance= 450 meters
Sample problem no. 2: (DISPLACEMENT)

Moneca travels 2500 meters to west but then

back-tracks to east for 1050 meters to pick up
andrea. So, what is her displacement?
Given:

Final Position: 2500 meters

Initial position: 1050 meters

Solution:

= final position- initial position

= 2500m – 1050m
= 1450m, west.

Speed, velocity,
and acceleration
cheetah is known to be the
fastest animal in the land.

They can reach at the

speed of 112 to 120
kilometers per hour

From a starting point a

cheetah can cover a
distance of 460 m to
1500ft in 3 seconds
Speed
● Speed is the rate at which distance is covered
at a given time.

Formula:
Speed = distance
Time

Observe

A fast-moving object has a

Moving faster high speed and covers a
relatively large distance in a
short amount of time.

A slow moving object that

has low speed it covers a
relatively small amount of
Moving slower
distance in the same amount
of time an object has no
movement at all has a zero
speed.
Example problem: (SPEED)

Keziah went running at a distance of 120 m in 30 seconds. What

was keziah’s average speed?
Given:

Distance: 120 m
Time: 30 s
Average speed: ?

Solution:
s=d
t
s = 120m
30s
s= 4 m/s
Velocity
is the directional speed of an object in motion as
an indication of its rate of change in position as
observed from a particular frame of reference and
as measured by a particular standard of time.
Formula:
Velocity = displacement
Time
Example problem: (VELOCITY)
What is the runner’s average velocity if his position
changes from 15m east to 40m east during a three
second time interval?

Given:
Initial Position: 15m, E
Final Position: 40m, E
= 40m,e- 15m,e
 = m,e
Time: 3s
Solution:
v=
t
v = 25m
3s
v = 8.33 m/s, east
Acceleration
it is refers to the rate of change in speed or velocity of an
object. It gives us an idea how quick an objects speeds up
and slows down.

Formula:
Acceleration = change of velocity
Time
Example Problem: (ACCELERATION)
A car accelerates from rest to 24m/s in 6s.
what is its average acceleration?
Given:
Initial Velocity: 0m/s
Final Velocity: 24 m/s
Change in velocity = 24m/s-0m/s = 24 m/s
Time: 6s

Solution:
Acceleration = change of velocity
time
a = 24 m/s
6s
a = 4 m/s2
